Recently, the number of people who suffer from a high level of stress has increased. Too much stress may cause various physical and/or mental disorders. Moreover, sleep disorders are increasing in modern society. The aim of our project is to develop a relaxation machine for reducing stress and inducing sleep by using a rocking vibration simulating a mother's embrace and rocking motion of her baby. First, we analyzed a mother's embrace and rocking motion using a 3D motion capture system, and we evaluated the sleep-inducing effect on adults by using an excitation apparatus simulating the mother's motions. We found from the experimental analysis that there are two types of motions, both consisting of linear motion and rotational motion. The effectiveness of the rocking motion for inducing sleep was verified from brain signal analysis.

Multispeculative Functional Units (MSFUs) are arithmetic functional units that operate using several predictors for the carry signal. The carry prediction helps to shorten the critical path of the functional unit. The average performance of these units is determined by the hit rate of the prediction. In spite of utilizing more than one predictor, none or only one additional cycle is enough for producing the correct result in the majority of the cases. In this paper we present multispeculation as a way of increasing the performance of tree structures with a negligible area penalty. By judiciously introducing these structures into computation trees, it will only be necessary to predict in certain selected nodes, thus minimizing the number of operations that can potentially mispredict. Hence, the average latency will be diminished and thus performance will be increased. Our experiments show that it is possible to improve on average 24% and 38% execution time, when considering logarithmic and linear modules, respectively.

Different logotypes represent significant cues for video annotations. A combination of temporal and spatial segmentation methods can be used for logo extraction from various video contents. To achieve this segmentation, pixels with low variation of intensity over time are detected. Static backgrounds can become spurious parts of these logos. This paper offers a new way to use several segmentations of logos to learn new logo models from which noise has been removed. First, we group segmented logos of similar appearances into different clusters. Then, a model is learned for each cluster that has a minimum number of members. This is done by applying a linear inverse diffusion filter to all logos in each cluster. Our experiments demonstrate that this filter removes most of the noise that was added to the logo during segmentation and it successfully copes with misclassified logos that have been wrongly added to a cluster.

Maintenance starts with reliable diagnostics. Programming Logic Controllers (PLCs) are often equipped with a high degree of diagnostic procedures in order to ensure that the processing unit is functioning correctly. It is vital to verify that the system with its programme is still within a 'healthy' state, otherwise a safety function is called and the system is brought into a safe state, or if possible, defect and malfunctioning components are exchanged during operation and the process can continue without shutting down the system. However, when it comes to smaller devices such as intelligent sensors, embedded controller devices with the functionality of an e.g. PID (Proportional-Integral-Derivative), predictive controller, filter or analytical algorithm, which is embedded into a FPGA or micro-controller then diagnostics and verification methods are often not considered in the way they should be. For example, if an intelligent sensor system is not able to diagnose that the sensor-head is malfunctioning, but the sensor-head still provides some data, then the smart algorithm bases its calculation on wrong data, which can cause a dangerous situation. This paper investigates and shows recent results to combine diagnostic methods for small scale devices. Several safety-related structures are considered with a high degree of diagnostic coverage. The paper presents relevant procedures and structures to increase the reliability of small devices without utilising a full scale microcontroller system.

As cyberarchaeology pushes the boundaries of digital replication of space, objects, and arguably, time itself, it simultaneously adjusts mankind's perception of these things, their connection to the individual and to culture, and our ability to analyze these increasingly solid intangible data sets. When considered as part of the evolving global modernist perspective, and as something valuable as a comparative analytical tool- these are useful developments. However, with every innovation, comes a price. And in creating virtually solid simulacra of cultural heritage, we must consider the implications of the removed authenticities cyberarchaeologists are creating. How might the ability to have a virtual copy affect international conservation policies for archaeological sites and collected artifacts? What does a virtual and potentially 3D printable version of an artifact mean to the economics of looting? How might digital augmentation in museums be balanced so as not to replace the real artifacts themselves? In developing the interdisciplinary and collaborative big-system cyberarchaeological methodologies and systems like those at the Center of Interdisciplinary Science for Art, architecture, and Archaeology at the University of California, San Diego, the ethical implications of reactions to digitization and digital analysis are being concurrently evaluated so that some flexible contingencies can be built in as a safety measure to protect the authentic from the misuse of its heterotopic virtual counterparts.

Hybrid approach of filtering unnecessary way accesses for set-associative caches

Power has been a big issue in processor design for several years. Conventional popular approaches for addressing this issue like DVFS (Dynamic Voltage Frequency Scaling) now hit the law of diminishing returns. As multi/many-core processors becoming the main stream processors, caches account for more and more CPU die area and power, this paper presents using filtering unnecessary way accesses to reduce dynamic power consumption of caches shared by instruction and data. The methods include using Invalid Filter, which could eliminate accesses to cache ways contained invalid blocks, and I/D Filter, which could eliminate accesses to cache ways contained instruction/data access type mismatch blocks, and Tag-2 Filter, which could eliminate accesses to cache ways contained tag lowest 2 bits mismatch blocks. Since the methods reducing the activities happened in cache architecture, dynamical CPU power could be significantly decreased. In the paper, we also propose combining the above methods together, which is called Invalid+I/D+Tag-2 Filter, in an attempt to achieve better power saving results. We have verified the effectiveness and complementariness of the three proposed methods through analysis and experiments. Also, our evaluations show that, we could obtain 19.6%~47.8% (which is on average 34.3%) improvement on a 64KB-4way set-associative cache and 19.6%~55.2% (which is on average 39.2%) improvement on a 128KB-8way set-associative cache comparing to Invalid+I/D Filter, and 16.1%~27.7% (which is on average 16.6%) improvement on a 64KB-4way set-associative cache and 6.9%~44.4% (which is on average 25.0%) improvement on a 128KB-8way set-associative cache comparing to Invalid+Tag-2 Filter, respectively.

This work presents a Color Fuzzy Set Design procedure, or similarly a color naming procedure, based on the VITA Classical dental color shade guide, for composite color matching applications in direct restorations in aesthetic dentistry. For that purpose, a psychophysical experience based on a set of visual assessments by a panel of observers was performed, with the objective of identifying the areas of the CIELAB color space which can be associated to each shade of the VITA guide. A number of composite sets from four different manufacturing companies were used in the experiment. This information was processed and a set of nonparametric Fuzzy Sets was obtained for the VITA shades, with the aid of an acceptability dental color threshold taken from previous studies. The designed Fuzzy Set System was applied for the identification of the VITA shade of different dentine and enamel composite samples (bilaminar technique) from two different manufacturing companies, with the subsequent clinical applicability. Results show a high level of accuracy in VITA shade identification of the operated dental samples, when compared with visual assessment performed by experts.

To reduce the dependence on fossil fuels and the greenhouse gas emission, the integration of wind energy has attracted worldwide attention. Stochastic unit commitment (SUC) problem with wind generation uncertainty is difficult, since wind generation is intermittent and uncertain. In the stochastic programming approach, a large number of scenarios are required to represent the stochastic wind generation, resulting in large computational effort. A Markovian approach was used to formulate the SUC problem by assuming the state of intermittent generation at a time instant summarized the information of the past in a probabilistic sense, in order to reduce computational complexity. For simplicity, wind generation state probabilities were calculated from state transition matrices, which were established based on historical data. In this paper, to improve the modeling accuracy, wind power forecasts are embedded into the Markov modeling framework, where the wind power forecast with historical forecast error is converted to discrete states with associated probabilities. In addition, corrective control actions such as load shedding and wind curtailment are considered in the Markovian approach to capture high-impact abnormal operating conditions such as sudden wind changes. Numerical testing results demonstrate the cost efficiency of the new method.

However security education depends on real project context. In this article, we address the educational challenges in teaching information and software system security by presenting an education framework governed by context-driven action research used for developing modules in specific regular and distance learning programs. We differentiate issues relating to both regular and distance learning program.

Distributed networked sensor systems have a potential applicability for developing a slope disaster monitoring system. A low energy consumption property and an eventual long running life are an important issue in this type of outdoor application. This paper proposes a probabilistic strategy to turn on/off each sensor node that could reduce an entire amount of consuming energy over the network. Effectiveness of the proposed probability assignment strategy is evaluated through numerical experiments, and convergence property is also investigated.
