Virtualization technologies have brought with them the promise of increased security and energy saving. Such was the case with the Cisco Nexus virtual switching environment. However, possible security issues of this environment have not been evaluated and the achievable energy savings have not been quantified yet. In particular, it was necessary to investigate whether the security vulnerabilities existing in physical switches had persisted into the virtual environment. This paper provides an evaluation of the energy saving and an analysis of the security implications of the Cisco Nexus virtual distributed switching environment.

Competition for shared memory resources on multiprocessors is the most dominant cause for slowing down applications and makes their performance varies unpredictably. It exacerbates the need for Quality of Service (QoS) on such systems. In this paper, we propose a fair-progress process scheduling (FPS) policy to improve system fairness. Its strategy is to force the equally-weighted applications to have the same amount of slowdown when they run concurrently. The basic approach is to monitor the progress of all applications at runtime. When we find an application suffered more slowdown and accumulated less effective work than others, we allocate more CPU time to give it a better parity. Our policy also allows different weights to different threads, and provides an effective and robust tuner that allows the OS to freely make tradeoffs between system fairness and higher throughput. Evaluation results show that FPS can significantly improve system fairness by an average of 53.5% and 65.0% on a 4-core processor with a private cache and a 4-core processor with a shared cache, respectively. The penalty is about 1.1% and 1.6% of the system throughput. For memory-intensive workloads, FPS also improves system fairness by an average of 45.2% and 21.1% on 4-core and 8-core system respectively at the expense of a throughput loss of about 2%. © 2012 ACM.

This paper presents a motion estimation processor based on a dual-core architecture. Both cores are based on bit-serial adder trees. Memory structures are also described. This architecture is bit-precision reconfigurable. Performance results for several smartphones and tablets are presented. Furthermore, hardware results and comparison with other works are included. Real-time processing is achieved for all devices studied.

In this paper, a new approach for Self-evolving PArameter-free fuzzy Rule-based Controller (SPARC) is proposed. Two illustrative examples are provided aiming a proof of concept. The proposed controller can start with no pre-defined fuzzy rules, and does not need to pre-define the range of the output or control variables. This SPARC learns autonomously from its own actions while performing the control of the plant. It does not use any parameters, explicit membership functions, any off-line pre-training nor the explicit model (e.g. in a form of differential equations) of the plant. It combines the relative older concept of indirect adaptive control with the newer concepts of (self-)evolving fuzzy rule-based systems (and controllers, in particular) and with the very recent concept of parameter-free, data cloud and data density based fuzzy rule based systems (and controllers in particular). It has been demonstrated that a fully autonomously and in an unsupervised manner (based only on the data density and selecting representative prototypes/focal points from the control hyper-surface acting as a data space) it is possible generate a parameter-free control structure and evolve it in on-line mode. Moreover, the results demonstrate that this autonomous controller is effective (has comparative error and performance characteristics) to other known controllers, including self-learning ones, but surpasses them with its flexibility and extremely lean structure (small number of prototypes/focal points which serve as seeds to form parameter-free and membership function-free fuzzy rules based on them). The illustrative examples aim primarily proof of concept.

Concrete is a popular construction material used broadly in many kinds of structures. The compressive strength is the most important performance of the concrete responsible to the safety of such structures. Although method of sampling a specimen is commonly employed, it makes damage to the structures. While Schmidt Hammer measures the hardness of the surface, but it relates to the compressive strength with poor accuracy owing to the influence of the conditions of the surface. Considering that the ultrasound propagating inside the concrete with higher strength will decrease less, the quality factor of the ultrasound signals should be higher, we have proposed a new method that evaluates the concrete strength non-destructively using the quality factor of resonant peak of multi-reflected ultrasound propagated inside the concrete. The quality factor is calculated by a linear predictive coefficient (LPC) processing on the ultrasonic signals, where the order of the LPC is an important parameter, by which the number of the poles of the LPC model is determined. Neither too many poles, which include too much details of the original signal with noise, nor too few poles, which lack of the proprieties at the resonant peaks, may express the propriety of ultrasonic propagation clearly. In this paper, as one of the approach of optimizing the parameters employed in measurement and signal processing, the relation between the resonant frequency and the appropriate order of LPC is discussed by numerical simulation and experiment. In the experiment, three types of concrete specimen with identical dimensions but different strengths (48.4 N/mm~2, 37.1 N/mm~2 and 27.9 N/mm~2 respectively) and four kinds of sound sources and receivers with different resonant frequency (28 kHz, 46 kHz, 68 kHz and 105 kHz, respectively) are employed. SpiNNaker is a custom-made architecture designed to model large-scale spiking neural nets. One of the most significant characteristics of neural nets is their extreme communication needs; each neuron propagates its activation to thousands of other neurons. This paper shows analytical proof that the novel multicast router in SpiNNaker is a better solution for simulating neural nets than more powerful point-to-point routers such as those found on datacentres or high performance computing systems, even when it has significantly lower requirements in terms of complexity, area and power. First, we characterised the utilization of resources required by both multicast and unicast networks. Then we derived the band-width needs of different communication architectures. Finally, we derived the amount of neurons the different networks can support. From these analyses we determined that the multicast communications adopted in SpiNNaker will be able to support the target application under the expected operation conditions.

This paper proposes a methodology using a fast variable selection as a modified version of the Forward-Backward algorithm. This methodology is adapted to the specificities of the data used: very small number of samples and high number of variables. Such data is generated using underlying dependencies and seasonality assumptions, from Meme phrases volume data. By the use of a resampling technique along with the proposed variable selection scheme, significant results are obtained, and the test Normalized Mean Square Error performances are improved. The results indicate that with the assumptions made on the data structure, variable selection is desirable. Also, the obtained information on the selected variables seem to cluster the time series in two very different classes: a set of approximately 600 series, which yield good NMSE, and seem to require very similar sets of variables for the prediction;and another set of 300 - 400 series, for which only the previous series value is of interest for the prediction. This first analysis clearly illustrates the future need to perform a more thorough analysis of the selected variables for each of the batch of series. Also, taking a close look at the possible dependences between the series inside a batch should give information as to why and how they are similar and have found themselves to be grouped under the same batch.

The article presents a novel approach to medical video data analysis and recognition. Emphasis has been put on adapting existing algorithms detecting lesions and bleedings for real time usage in a medical doctor's office during an endoscopic examination. A system for diagnosis recommendation and disease detection has been designed taking into account the limited mobility of the endoscope and the doctor's requirements. The main goal of the performed research was to establish the possibility of assuring the necessary performance to introduce the solution into real-life diagnostics. The structure of an exemplary algorithm has been analyzed to distinguish and discuss parallelization options. After introducing them to the algorithm, the usage of a supercomputer multimedia processing platform allowed to acquire the throughput and latency values required for real-time usage. Four different configurations of the algorithm have been tested and all their measured parameters have been provided and discussed. © 2012 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

There are several dementias but Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is leading cause of dementia in the world. In this paper, a new methodology for classification of MR images is proposed, using a large data base (more than one thousand patient). We have two main objectives in this paper: a first one where a classification method is developed to classify MR images as either normal or with the Alzheimer's disease and a second which is the ambitious goal of this study, the identification and classification between normal subjects, MCI patients and AD patients. It is noteworthy that with this last study we could offer a tool to assist the early diagnosis of dementia.

The widening gap between the fast-increasing transistor budget but slow-growing power delivery and system cooling capability calls for novel architectural solutions to boost energy efficiency. Leveraging the fact of surging “dark silicon” area, we propose a hybrid scheme to use both on-chip and off-chip voltage regulators, called “AgileRegulator”, for a multicore system to explore both coarse-grain and fine-grain power phases. We present two complementary algorithms: Sensitivity-Aware Application Scheduling (SAAS) and Responsiveness-Aware Application Scheduling (RAAS) to maximally achieve the energy saving potential of the hybrid regulator scheme. Experimental results show that the hybrid scheme achieves performance-energy efficiency close to per-core DVFS, without imposing much design cost. Meanwhile, the silicon overhead of this scheme is well contained into the “dark silicon”. Unlike other application specific schemes based on accelerators, the proposed scheme itself is a simple and universal solution for chip area and energy trade-offs.
