Neuromorphic engineers aim to mimic the precise and efficient mechanisms of the nervous system to process information using spikes from sensors to actuators. There are many available works that sense and process information in a spike-based way. But there are still several gaps in the actuation and motor control field in a spike-based way. Spike-based Proportional-Integrative-Derivative controllers (PID) are present in the literature. On the other hand, neuro-inspired control models as VITE (Vector Integration To End point) and FLETE (Factorization of muscle Length and muscle Tension) are also present in the literature. This paper presents another step toward the spike implementation of those neuro-inspired models. We present a spike-based ramp multiplier. VITE algorithm generates the way to achieve a final position targeted by a mobile robotic arm. The block presented is used as a gate for the way involved and it also puts the incoming movement on speed with a variable slope profile. Only spikes for information representation were used and the process is in real time. The software simulation based on Simulink and Xilinx System Generator shows the accurate adjust to the traditional processing for short time periods and the hardware tests confirm and extend the previous simulated results for any time. We have implemented the spikes generator, the ramp multiplier and the low pass filter into the Virtex-5 FPGA and connected this with an USB-AER (Address Event Representation) board to monitor the spikes.

Image recognition with extension of neighborhood preserving embedding on matrices

Neighborhood Preserving Embedding (NPE) is a novel subspace learning algorithm, which aims at preserving the local neighborhood structure on the data manifold and is a linear approximation to Locally Linear Embedding (LLE). However, in typical image recognition in 1D vectors space, where the number of data samples is smaller than the dimension of data space, suffering from the singularity problem of matrix, NPE algorithm cannot be implemented directly. In this paper, we investigate NPE directly on image matrix for image recognition. The proposed Two-dimensional Neighborhood Preserving Embedding (2DNPE) and bilateral Two-dimensional Neighborhood Preserving Embedding (B2DNPE) algorithms are all based directly on 2D image matrices rather than on 1D vectors as NPE does, thus the problem of singularity confronted in 1D case is overcome. 2DNPE performs compression only in row direction, while B2DNPE performs compression both in row and in column direction. The relation of them to 2DLPP (B2DLPP) are also presented. The proposed algorithms are evaluated on ORL face database and handwritten digits database. © 2012 by Binary Information Press.

The impact of landscape on the urban environment is substantiated in a variety of literature and applications. Although landscape has a vital role in urban fabrics, it can also negatively affect the contextual environment. Taking into consideration that the classification of landscape aspects is diverse helps in better understanding for . landscape settings. This diversification is attributed to the complexity of the various facets of landscape design. Thus, there is a need for organizing landscape features data, highlighting their bearing on the performance and quality of landscape design. In addition to the mutual effect of these features on each other based on their contextual relationships. This paper aims to appropriate landscape metrics as a tool for ensuring settings1 quality using Geographic Information Systems as a moderator 'for metrics generation. This is achieved through discussing landscape setting as a system, complexity of databases, and the concept of landscape metrics. This will lead to introducing a framework for landscape metrics formulation for a better understanding and classification of landscape design inputs and outputs.

A survey on community reaction to noise and vibration from railway and road traffic was conducted at four sites in Hanoi in August 2010, and the noise and vibration exposures were measured in September, in order to contribute to noise policies in Vietnam. The responses were obtained from 491 out of 600 citizens living along the railways and the roads. The railway noise and vibration exposures ranged between LAeq, 24h 58 and 82 dB and between L Vmax 57 and 85 dB along the railways. The road traffic noise and vibration exposures ranged between LAeq, 24h 66 and 79 dB and between LVmax 57 and 85 dB along the roads, respectively. This study shows that combined noise annoyance was best explained by the dominant source model. Annoyance caused by railway noise was significantly higher than that caused by road traffic noise, and almost the same as the Miedema curve for aircraft noise. In addition, the effects of the maximum vibration level on annoyance and activity disturbances were not significant, but these reactions at the high vibration site were slightly higher than those at the low vibration site.

This study investigates the structure of the editorial processes at a Swedish monthly magazine for interior decorating and design, Sköna hem, and assesses the carbon footprint (greenhouse gas emissions) of the editorial content production during one year. The objective is to define the processes using a computer based process modeling tool and to analyze the workflow in order to discover how the different steps in the production process relate to different environmentally related parameters. An additional objective is to present the carbon footprint of the overall editorial work and to identify the major reasons for greenhouse gas emissions, as well as any major data gaps and uncertainties. Semi-structured interviews were undertaken in order to identify the process steps involved in the content production. Environmentally related parameters, such as travel distance, mode of transports, and computer hours, were then collected for each process step. Life cycle assessment methodology was used to assess the potential greenhouse gas emissions of the editorial work at Sköna hem. A number of process steps were identified in the content production. Three overall phases were identified, into which the process steps can be grouped. Firstly, the planning phase consists of meetings with different key persons in order to plan the content of the next issues of the magazine. Secondly, the executive phase was identified. Here, all the articles and pictures are produced. Thirdly, the assembly phase includes text editing and page design. Finally, ready-made pages are sent to printing or to the digital publishing channels such as tablets and the web. According to the assessment made, the editorial content production at Sköna hem has a carbon footprint of 23 tons of carbon dioxide equivalents per year. We propose sparse approximation weighted regression (SPARROW), a method for local estimation of the regression function that uses sparse approximation with a dictionary of measurements. SPARROW estimates the regression function at a point with a linear combination of a few regressands selected by a sparse approximation of the point in terms of the regressors. We show SPARROW can be considered a variant of k-nearest neighbors regression (k-NNR), and more generally, local polynomial kernel regression. Unlike k-NNR, however, SPARROW can adapt the number of regressors to use based on the sparse approximation process. Our experimental results show the locally constant form of SPARROW performs competitively.

The rise of ubiquitous computing leads to a natural convergence between the areas of architectural design (the design of buildings, spaces and experience of being in and moving through them) and HCI. We suggest that architecture and CHI have much to learn from each other in terms of research and practice. This workshop will bring together these communities to explore the benefits of architecture envisioned as integral to an expanded CHI community. The workshop organizers aim to create a framework for future collaboration and identify new directions for research in this multidisciplinary field. This promises significant impacts on both interaction research and its real-world applications. © 2012 Authors.

In recent years, embedded systems based on microprocessors have progressed significantly. This fact allows to use powerful operating systems and programming languages with a high level of abstraction which facilitates the development of applications. This paper shows a communication system designed to be run on a BeagleBoard, a low-cost device based on the chip OMAP 3530. The developed system allows to manage audio signal and involves the wireless transmission of the signals between devices using the Bluetooth technology and a filtering step based on Wiener methodology that improve the signal-noise ratio. This work represents the starting point for implementing a set of signal processing applications on the BeagleBoard.

Research has shown that environment lighting influences the behavior of the employees in an office setting highly, making lighting configuration in an office space crucial. A breakout area may be used by the employees for various activities that need to be supported by different lighting conditions, e.g. informal meetings or personal retreat. The desired lighting conditions depend on user preferences and other contextual data observable in the environment. In this paper, we introduce a new method for building prediction models to provide intelligent lighting in our pilot breakout area. Based on a set of pre-defined features that are expected to have influence on the users' choice in selecting a desired lighting environment, we introduce a probabilistic model for generating synthetic data. We also discuss and compare the performances of various rule-based classification models on the synthetic data and find `DecisionTable' to be the most suitable model for our pilot implementation. We study the influence of the training set size (number of samples) on various classification models and the influences of individual features through simulations. We present empirical results based on the synthetic dataset and a roadmap for future research.

The quadruped/biped reconfigurable walking robot with parallel leg mechanism can realize not only the quadruped walking, but also the biped walking. The converting process from the quadruped to the biped includes locking the vertical revolute pair hinged with the upper platform and combining the corresponding lower platforms. Based on the previous study, the combining schemes of walking chair are researched in this paper, and then the correctness of the combining schemes is analyzed by using the position workspace of the swing leg and the body mechanism in different states which are obtained by the MATLAB software and anti-solution search method. Compared with the stability margin and the adjustment coordination of the body in the different combining schemes, the optimal combining gaits of walking chair are selected, which lays the theoretical foundation for the quadruped/biped converting control of walking chair. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.
