This paper describes an ant-based clustering algorithms and suggests its application as a swarm art conceptual tool. The algorithm, called KANTS, consists on a set of equations that model the local behavior of simple units (ants) that represent data samples. When moving on a heterogeneous 2-dimensional lattice of vectors, global behavior emerges from the local interaction between the ants, which self-organize into clusters. In this paper, KANTS is used outside a purely scientific framework. The algorithm is applied to two different types of data (sleep Electroencephalogram signals and colored photographs) for generating 2-dimensional abstract representations of those sets of data. We call the images pherogenic drawings, since they are a visual representation of the algorithm's pheromone maps. The method is contextualized within the swarm art field as well as within the authors' previous works on swarm art.

The concept of intelligent lighting facilitates the use of machine learning models to adapt the lighting application behavior based on changing context. Ideally, a complete dataset without missing values is used to train the learning algorithm. Nevertheless, it is common to have missing data values in the dataset, e.g. due to lack of rich enough user interfaces such as smart phones. In this paper, we study various probabilistic approaches to treat missing feature values in a dataset collected from an office breakout area. This dataset is used to train the learning model to provide intelligent lighting solutions. We evaluate the performance of five different approaches by simulation, using four rule-based classification algorithms and various proportions of missing data. We find that none of these approaches gives best performance over the necessary range of conditions, and that an adaptive strategy is more suited.

An new swarm intelligence algorithm based on the behavior of honeybee swarms has been proposed for some years, namely, Artificial Bee Colony(ABC). In this work, ABC is used for optimizing a set of split in a given integration interval by simulating the foraging activities of bees and reflecting the changing trends of the integrand. At the same time, this work also compares the performance of ABC algorithm with that of Trapezoidal, Simpson, Differential Evolution(DE), particle swarm optimization(PSO) for numerical integration. The simulation results show that the mentioned algorithm for numerical integration outperforms the other algorithm.

Smart spaces provide enhanced user experience through sensing and adaptation to changing context. Hence, they allow distributed applications to show intelligent, autonomous and interactive behavior. Two important research topics within this field are machine learning and human-system interaction. This paper introduces a pilot smart space implementation on top of a Wireless Sensor and Actuator Network (WSAN) infrastructure that is specifically intended to investigate these two aspects. We investigate a scenario built around an office breakout area context. We describe the infrastructure setup, the novel user interfaces, the network architecture and the message exchange policies of the pilot implementation. We employ the opportunities of modern lighting systems in the proposed implementation.

In shared-memory Chip Multiprocessor (CMP), shared data between different cores must be exchanged through the last-level-shared-cache and cache coherence must be maintained at the same time. As the number of cores increase, the cache coherence wall has become more and more serious. As for the multimedia applications full of streaming-like data, existing multicore cache coherence protocols show lower performance and cannot meet the timeliness. In the paper, considering the poor temporal locality and high real-time characteristics of the multimedia data, we propose the distributed light-weight active-push buffer (DWALP-buffer) architecture to alleviate the cache coherence latency on streaming-like data in CMP. The architecture introduces a dedicated shared-data exchange channel between adjacent cores. The channel bridges the internal register files and reduces the shared-data communication latency. Supported by the control protocol, the architecture can adaptively balance the rate mismatch in producer-consumer pipeline model. We build a quad-core CMP simulation platform with the DWLAP-buffers. Our experiment indicates that comparing with the last-shared-level-cache method the architecture can improve the average performance by 13% and alleviate the snooping operations caused from maintaining cache coherence by 26%.

This paper explores the scalability and performance of pool and island based evolutionary algorithms, both of them using as a mean of interaction an object store, we call this family of algorithms SofEA. This object store allows the different clients to interact asynchronously, the point of the creation of this framework is to build a system for spontaneous and voluntary distributed evolutionary computation. The fact that each client is autonomous leads to a complex behavior that will be examined in the work, so that the design can be validated, rules of thumb can be extracted, and the limits of scalability can be found. In this paper we advance the design of an asynchronous, fault-tolerant and scalable distributed evolutionary algorithm based on the object store CouchDB. We test experimentally the different options and show the trade-offs that pool and island-based solutions offer.

This study reports agent-based simulation findings regarding the effect of price forecast methods on power market stability. Under the dynamic pricing scheme, the uncleared issue is the emergent behavior of retail customers given the fact that customers have to forecast real-time price to make optimal consumption decisions. The interaction of intelligent retail customers who learn to select forecast methods drives the system dynamics. Simulation results are used to compare with analytical model to draw conclusions on the effect of different factors on the system stability.

Embedded control systems used in safety critical systems need to be robust to quality-faults such as shift, noise, and spikes. Methods for finding counterexamples (quality-faults whose injection leads to violation of fault-tolerance requirements) at an early stage of control system design were proposed in the literature. Given these counterexamples, control design should be improved such that it is quality-fault tolerant. In this paper, we propose an effective methodology for finding critical components in embedded control systems which are sensitive to quality-faults based on the given counterexamples, which is an important step towards improving the control design. Experimental results on the fault-tolerant fuel controller of Simulink library show the efficacy of proposed methodology.

As interactive systems become increasingly entwined with architecture, and spaces become able to detect the presence of individuals, we argue that the control of visibility as a temporary personal state should be considered in the design of public spaces. This workshop will provide the opportunity for participants to engage hands-on with a computer vision tracking system (OpenCV) and explore how low-cost materials and tools can be used to render people invisible in monitored public space. We invite researchers and practitioners from the fields of art, design, HCI, architecture and social science to consider strategies for managing personal visibility and how these relate to design and the use of technologies. The intention of the workshop is not to produce implementable designs. Instead we prefer to make speculative design scenarios that might act as future inspiration or critique. By focusing on practical strategies for managing personal visibility we hope to extend designers thinking of presence in public space beyond the purely physical to include digital representations of inhabitation that are processed and archived remotely. © 2012 Authors.

With increasing worldwide wind generation capacity, efficient wind power integration into the electrical grid becomes important. The intermittent nature of wind generation makes it challenging, and transmission capacity constraints add a major level of complexity since with congestion, wind generation at one node may not be the same as wind generation at another node. When multiple wind farms are located at different nodes in the transmission network, the complexity increases drastically. In this paper, wind generation is formulated at the node level using discrete Markov processes, and is integrated into the nodal demand. The Markov property reduces the number of realizations of wind uncertainty over time, compared with the stochastic programming based on scenarios. To overcome the complexity because of multiple states of multiple wind farms, power flows are formulated using voltage phase angles, assuming that the power flows are dominated by the states of the two nodes connecting the line. Then the resulting flow imbalance at each node is handled by setting aside generation and transmission capacities. Numerical results of two examples demonstrate the efficiency and scalability of the new method.
