Air temperature element variation is affected by environmental factors. Factors that influence air temperature element variation are called air temperature control. There are numbers environmental factors of air temperature element control and this study was investigated environmental factors of elevation, station's location, coastline and land use types. In this study multiple regression method was applied to explicate the contribution of environmental factors on air temperature element variation. Since air temperature data is in discrete points, therefore spatial interpolation analysis was used in producing continuous of this discrete data. In implementing spatial interpolation analysis, estimation error of T - T' data was used, where T is mean monthly air temperature and T' was estimated mean monthly mean air temperature from the developed multiple regression model. Analysis of cross validation was carried out to determine five measured of errors. Spatial interpolation analysis using main data of estimation error of T - T' produced reliable errors and consistent map for mean monthly mean air temperature element in Peninsular Malaysia. © 2012 IEEE.

3D virtual reality, including the current generation of multi-user virtual worlds, has had a long history of use in education and training, and it experienced a surge of renewed interest with the advent of Second Life in 2003. What followed shortly after were several years marked by considerable hype around the use of virtual worlds for teaching, learning and research in higher education. For the moment, uptake of the technology seems to have plateaued, with academics either maintaining the status quo and continuing to use virtual worlds as they have previously done or choosing to opt out altogether. This paper presents a brief review of the use of virtual worlds in the Australian and New Zealand higher education sector in the past and reports on its use in the sector at the present time, based on input from members of the Australian and New Zealand Virtual Worlds Working Group. It then adopts a forward-looking perspective amid the current climate of uncertainty, musing on future directions and offering suggestions for potential new applications in light of recent technological developments and innovations in the area. © 2013 Sue Gregory.

This paper exploits sink mobility to prolong the network lifetime in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) where the information delay caused by moving the sink should be bounded. We build a unified framework for analyzing this joint sink mobility and routing problem. We offer a mathematical modeling that is general and captures diversified issues, e.g. sink mobility, routing, delay, etc. We discuss the induced subproblems and present efficient solutions for them. Then, we generalize these solutions and propose a polynomial-time optimal algorithm for the origin problem. In simulations, we show the benefits of involving a mobile sink. We also show that the impact of the delay bound on the network lifetime.

Multimodal evolutionary algorithm for multidimensional scaling with city-block distances

Multidimensional scaling with city-block distances is considered in this paper. The technique requires optimization of an objective function which has many local minima and can be non-differentiable at minimum points. This study is aimed at developing a fast and effective global optimization algorithm spanning the whole search domain and providing good solutions. A multimodal evolutionary algorithm is used for global optimization to prevent stagnation at bad local optima. Piecewise quadratic structure of the least squares objective function with city-block distances has been exploited for local improvement. The proposed algorithm has been compared with other algorithms described in literature. Through a comprehensive computational study, it is shown that the proposed algorithm provides the best results. The algorithm with fine-tuned parameters finds the global minimum with a high probability. © 2012 Vilnius Universit.

New computational methodologies are increasingly being demanded in Bioinformatics due to the amount of data provided by high-throughput experiments. One of these approaches is multiple sequence alignment since feature integration is necessary to obtain more accurate and faster alignments. Alignments of nucleotide and protein sequences can help us to understand tasks like biological functions or structures in these molecules. Recent applications tend to use more available data that represent similarity among sequences: homologies, structures, functions, domains, motifs, etc. Thus, we present a review of current methods in multiple sequence alignments and their improvements integrating accurately and efficiently these heterogeneous data. © 2011 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Improved cryptanalysis of the VMPC stream cipher

VMPC is a modified RC4 stream cipher proposed in FSE 2004, which is designed especially to resist distinguishing attacks. In this paper, we present a heuristic distinguishing attack against VMPC. By finding the weakness in the first two words of a keystream with two effective assumptions, we build a distinguisher and get a considerable bias. This attack only requires about 234.02 output bytes to distinguish VMPC from truly random sequence with success probability 0.9545. Thereby, this technique is further used to the Tsunoo's method and improve his results by a factor of about 24. 1553-9105/Copyright © 2012 Binary Information Press.

This paper proposes a novel category and scene classification framework using the Hidden Conditional Random Fields (HCRFs) model. The main advantage of the proposed framework is its ability to combines both large-scale global features and local patch features and incorporate a rich set of interactions to distinguish different categories and scenes. Given these representations, classification is done using Hidden Conditional Random Fields where it learns a set of hidden variable and observations need not be independent. Experiments on the dataset show that the proposed framework significantly outperforms the baseline approaches. 1553-9105/Copyright © 2012 Binary Information Press.

This paper proposes a swarm intelligence framework for distributed population-based metaheuristics that uses stigmergy and similarity measures as basic modeling rules with a local range of action for structuring the neighborhood. The system - which can be described as a cellular automaton with short-term memory - displays complex and emergent behavior whose most visible trait is the self-organization of a population of particles into dynamic clusters. These clusters tend to gather similar particles (similarity here is measured as the algebraic difference between randomly assigned fitness values). During the execution of the algorithm, the particles move through a grid of nodes leaving a mark with the fitness value of the particle in each node they visit. When deciding where to move, the particles take into account the marks in the neighborhood and tend to travel to nodes with marks that minimize the difference between the particle's fitness and the mark's fitness. A kind of hierarchical behavior is also modeled by forcing the particles to move toward nodes with better fitness values. We show that these simple rules conduct the system to a critical state in which clusters are constantly created and broken, while maintaining a typical pattern of clusters and paths. In addition, we demonstrate that the system's variables display noise, which is one of the signatures of Self-Organized Criticality (SOC). Since it does not require the tuning of control parameters to precise values, we hypothesize that the proposed system converges to SOC.

Accurate lane recognition for moving vehicles is important for lane keeping and lane changing assistance systems. Additionally, this information could be leveraged by Intelligent Transportation Systems to suggest lane changes for improved traffic load balancing across lanes. This paper presents a position estimation algorithm for moving vehicles based on RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) active sensors placed on roadsides and lane boundaries, and multiple on-car RFID receiver antennas. To improve localization accuracy, the algorithm proposes two novel ideas: (1) compute pair-wise position estimates using the RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indication) of all pairs of signals received from RFIDs, and (2) compute the final position as a weighted average of these pair-wise estimates using a dynamic weighting function that assigns higher weights to positions estimated based on closer RFIDs. The results from our field experiments indicate that the proposed method achieves 0.7-meter localization accuracy when RFIDs are placed at 0.5-meter intervals and a vehicle has 8 antennas. This accuracy allows a moving vehicle to recognize which lane it is in. The localization accuracy of the proposed method was found to be mostly stable for any type of road shape and any number of lanes. A further 14% accuracy improvement is achieved when RFIDs are placed at 0.25-meter intervals and the RFIDs located farther than 30-meter are excluded from computation.

The Evolvable Agent model is a Peer-to-Peer Evolutionary Algorithm [4] which focuses on distributed optimisation over Peer-to-Peer infrastructures [7]. The main idea of the model is that every agent (i.e. individual) is designated as a peer (i.e. network node) and adopts a decentralised population structure defined by the underlying Peer-to-Peer protocol newscast [3]. That way, the population structure acquires a small network diameter which allows a fast dissemination of the best solutions. Additionally, speed of propagation holds with scaling network sizes due to the logarithmic growth of the network diameter.
