Protein structure prediction (PSP) is an open problem with many useful applications in disciplines such as Medicine, Biology and Biochemistry. As this problem presents a vast search space where the analysis of each protein structure requires a significant amount of computing time, it is necessary to propose efficient search procedures in this very large space of possible protein conformations. Thus, an important issue is to add vital information (such as rotamers) to the process to decrease its active search space -rotamers give statistical information about torsional angles and conformations. In this paper, we propose a new method to refine the torsional angles of a protein to remake/reconstruct its structures with more resemblance to its original structure. This approach could be used to improve the accuracy of the rotamer libraries and/or to extract information from the Protein Data Bank to facilitate solution of the PSP problem.

The embedded systems market and especially the software part of it is growing drastically in automotive industry. Today we see that the value of software or functionality that is realized using software within cars is about 35% of the value of the car itself. We have typically more than 70 embedded control units (ECUs) in a car with functionality realized and controlled by software. The standardization of communication interfaces and operating system functionality as for example realized by AUTOSAR facilitates the distributed development of software. But the needs to produce software in time and in budget remain still a main task in automotive software industry. To cope with tight project plans, process models based on product line technology promise a good chance to be successful. Nevertheless, the need to control the product development remains still one of the most important questions in this area. The work presented here gives some new insights into the definition and application of measures with special emphasis on the variability aspects used within a product line development. Several known techniques as for example atomic sets or formal variability analysis are revisited and used within the context of variability metrics. The measures are categorized and can be used within a project to control and manage the defined variability. Copyright 2011 ACM.

In this paper, we study the lifetime optimization problem in wireless sensor networks using mobile sink nodes. This problem is inherently difficult since we need to consider both sink scheduling and data routing. Through a simple case study we develop a novel notation named the Placement pattern (PP) to bound traffic patterns with candidate locations. This significantly decreases the number of elements needed to be scheduled. Based on the PP, we mathematically formulate this optimization problem as a Mixed-integer non-linear programming (MINLP), which is very tough and time consuming to solve. By proving that the problem is NP-complete, we point out that instead of seeking an optimal algorithm, heuristic algorithms, especially those with performance guarantee, would be much more desirable to develop. Furthermore, in order to help identify performance gains of heuristic algorithms proposed in the future, we develop a Linear programming (LP) formulation which serves as an upper bound by adopting a reformulation and relaxation technique.

In this paper, an application of intelligent systems to solve the problem of daily physical activity recognition is presented. Taking into account the importance of data featuring and the selection of the most important features for subsequent pattern recognition stage, a new feature selection methodology based on a filter technique via a couple of two statistical criteria is presented.
