Workplaces are changing as new technologies are introduced in an effort to improve efficiency and increase business turnover. Although there has been an explosion of mobile technologies and devices in recent time, very few in situ studies of the adoption of these technologies have been undertaken. This paper reports on the results of a longitudinal case study of a business over a six year period as a knowledge worker shifted from Australia to the USA and then to England. It outlines how the company moved from paper based systems to an online system and finally to a mobile commerce system. The authors have used mobile informatics to analyze the use of mobile devices in particular settings and low end disruption theory to assist in the interpretation of the data.

FPGAs offer flexibility and cost-effectiveness that ASICs cannot match; however, their performance is quite poor in comparison, especially for arithmetic dominated circuits. To address this issue, this paper introduces a novel reconfigurable lattice built from counters rather than look-up tables that can effectively accelerate the arithmetic portions of a circuit. We intend to integrate this novel lattice onto the same die as an FPGA.

The Technical University of Berlin has the objective to develop such components, which are not available yet. The first device under development is the so called "micro wheel", which is designed to be used in pico satellites, allowing a precise 3-axis attitude stabilization. The verification of these wheels in space will be done by BEESAT, the first pico satellite of TU Berlin. The main objective of BeeSat is the on orbit verification of newly developed micro wheels for pico satellite applications. These wheels, with the size of a one Euro coin in diameter, supported by DLR (FKZ 50JR0552) and developed in cooperation with Astro-und Feinwerktechnik, will drastically improve the actuation capabilities of pico satellites.

The latest research in the development of technologies that will allow humans to communicate, using brain signals only, with computers, wheelchairs, prostheses, and other *** in developing an effective communication interface connecting the human brain and a computer has grown rapidly over the past decade. The brain-computer interface (BCI) would allow humans to operate computers, wheelchairs, prostheses, and other devices, using brain signals only. BCI research may someday provide a communication channel for patients with severe physical disabilities but intact cognitive functions, a working tool in computational neuroscience that contributes to a better understanding of the brain, and a novel independent interface for human-machine communication that offers new options for monitoring and control. This volume presents a timely overview of the latest BCI research, with contributions from many of the important research groups in the field. The book covers a broad range of topics, describing work on both noninvasive (that is, without the implantation of electrodes) and invasive approaches. Other chapters discuss relevant techniques from machine learning and signal processing, existing software for BCI, and possible applications of BCI research in the real world.

A study on the comprehensive evaluation of the social, environmental and economic benefits of the land fund expenditure in Shenzhen was made based on fuzzy mathematics. To be more objective and more effective, the benefit evaluation procedure was improved in the following aspects. Firstly, the index system of comprehensive evaluation was established according to the main usage of the land fund in Shenzhen over the years. Secondly, with the assumption that the direct benefits and indirect benefits are different in proportion, the paper confirmed the weights of the main indexes according to the actual expenditure situation of the land fund. Finally, this paper regarded the relevant standard of developed country and urban construction in our country as the standard to confirm the grades of the indexes. The calculation result showed that there are 13 indexes regarded as excellent among the 24 indexes selected; the proportion changes of direct and indirect benefits have little influence on the total evaluation result; weights and evaluation grades of the social benefit were the highest in the 3 types of benefits, the economic benefit was the lowest; the weights and evaluation grades of municipal engineering were the highest, and accessory facility was the lowest.

We propose a mitigation technique of high-level multiple access interference(MAI) for multimedia optical Code- Division Multiple-Access(CDMA) systems using the optical power selector. The proposed system can eliminate high-intensity MAI at the receiver for the low-priority users. Moreover, the proposed scheme can reduce by half the required number of code sequences compared to the conventional scheme. As a result, the proposed scheme can obtain higher code spreading gain due to the increase of number of weights at the same code-length. We analyze performances of the proposed scheme and show that both the high-priority users and low-priority users achieve lower bit error rates in comparison to the conventional scheme.

The recent changes in the world and engineering present both challenges and opportunities to the engineering education. Engineering education is changing to meet these challenges. More and more engineering programs strive to include entrepreneurship and innovation, traditionally American values, in the engineering curriculum. In this paper, we present our view on teaching entrepreneurship to future engineers and describe our experience in introducing entrepreneurship in engineering education through an NSF-sponsored pilot program based on collaboration between Stony Brook University and three other major higher education institutions on Long Island.

This paper presents three hierarchical algorithms for data aggregation in wireless sensor networks where sensors can crash and recover. The network is divided in several regions. The algorithms ensure (i) the selection of a common data aggregator sensor within each region, in charge of the collection of local data, and (ii) the selection of a unique super-aggregator sensor, in charge of the collection of global data, among all the aggregators. Both selections are achieved by implementing the Omega failure detector, which provides a self-organizing and fault-tolerant leader election service. We also introduce a battery depletion threshold to provide wireless sensor network QoS.

In this paper we present a study on the requirements for the design and implementation of simulation packages for Grid systems. Grids are emerging as new distributed computing systems whose main objective is to manage and allocate geographically distributed computing resources to applications and users in an efficient and transparent manner. Grid systems are at present very difficult and complex to use for experimental studies of large-scale distributed applications. Although the field of simulation of distributed computing systems is mature, recent developments in large-scale distributed systems are raising needs not present in the simulation of the traditional distributed systems. Motivated by this, we present in this work a set of basic requirements that any simulation package for Grid computing should offer. This set of functionalities is obtained after a careful review of most important existing Grid simulation packages and includes new requirements not considered in such simulation packages. Based on the identified set of requirements, a Grid simulator is developed and exemplified for the Grid scheduling problem.
