The increase in high-performance microprocessor power consumption is due in part to the large power overhead of wide-issue, highly speculative cores. Microarchitectural speculation, such as branch prediction, increases instruction throughput but carries a power burden due to wasted power for mis-speculated instructions. Pipeline over-provisioning supplies excess resources which often go unused. In this paper, we use our detailed performance and power model for an Alpha 21264 to measure both the useful energy and the wasted effort due to mis-speculation and over-provisioning. Our experiments show that flushed instructions account for approximately 6% of total energy, while over-provisioning imposes a tax of 17% on average. These results suggest opportunities for power savings and energy efficiency throughout microprocessor pipelines.

In this paper a performance analysis in a cluster system of the parallel single front genetic algorithm (PSFGA) is carried out. The PSFGA is a parallel evolutionary optimizer for multiobjective problems that use a structured population in the form of a set of islands. The SFGA, an elitist evolutionary algorithm with a clearing procedure that uses a grid in the objective space for diversity maintaining purposes, is performed on each subpopulation (island) associated to a different area in the search space. Experimental results show that PSFGA outperforms SFGA and SPEA (strength Pareto evolutionary algorithm) in the cases studied.

Truncated multiplication can be used to significantly reduce the power dissipation for applications that do not require correctly-rounded results. This paper presents an efficient method for truncated multiplication called hybrid-correction truncation that utilizes the advantages of two previous methods to obtain lower average and maximum absolute error. Comparisons are presented contrasting power, area, and delay for all three methods compared to standard parallel multipliers. Estimates indicate that hybrid truncated multipliers dissipate slightly less power and consume slightly less area than previous methods for truncated multiplication. In addition, utilization of the hybrid truncation method can provide a method for altering the implementation within certain limits to meet a given precision.

Interval arithmetic provides an efficient method for monitoring and controlling errors in numerical calculations. However, existing software packages for interval arithmetic are often too slow for numerically intensive calculations. This paper presents the design of a comparator that performs either interval or two's complement/floating-point comparisons. This comparator requires only slightly more area than a conventional floating point comparator, and provides a significant performance improvement over software implementations of interval comparisons. Both serial and parallel designs are examined and the results are implemented in AMI 0.60 /spl mu/m technology.

In this paper we design an on-line controller which is able to modify and adapt the rule base of the system with just only qualitative knowledge about the plant to be controlled. This paper describes a hierarchical fuzzy steering controller approach to local navigation of an autonomous sensor equipped mobile robots. Two goals are considered simultaneously: obstacle avoidance, so that the robot is piloted safely in an unknown environment; and reaching an target point. A two-step approach to build a fuzzy system is presented. In the first stage signals are processed by conventional methods to get an output vector indicating the direction and the closeness of obstacles around. Stage two is a basic task steering controller, that is based on fuzzy logic. The modular structure of the first stage allows modifications on the robot. So there is no need for a redesign of the controller's architecture, when the controller is used in different applications. Adaptation to a new task is done simply by adjusting the controller to other conditions. Then the robustness of this controller is demonstrated in simulations by means of erroneous signals of the sensor modules. Finally the controller is used in combination with another basic task controller for 'Reaching an Aiming Point'. In a higher level a controller ascertains priority of the controllers and manages the resulting steering commands.

The paper describes the implementation of a software/hardware (Sw/Hw) retina-like preprocessor designed for the study of bio-inspired visual processing schemes, and for experimentation in the development of a cortical visual neuro-prosthesis. The goal is to obtain, in the near future, an integrated artificial retina for a visual neuro-prosthesis prototype able to stimulate efficiently an array of intra-cortical implanted microelectrodes. The Sw/Hw platform presented is highly programmable and reconfigurable as required for experimentation, providing real-time video processing and neuromorphic stimulation. But its implementation is also devised to be finally mapped into fully portable hardware, particularized for each implanted blind individual.

Immersive virtual environments (VEs) offer interactive, real-time visualization capabilities for engineers, architects, and scientists. This paper presents Virtual-SAP, an immersive VE application allowing users to assess building structures and their response to various environmental conditions through an interactive design-build-test-redesign cycle. Virtual-SAP has three distinct user interfaces that support its use with a high-end, multi-tracker VE system, with a low-cost portable VE system, or on the desktop. Two of these interfaces have been proven highly usable in user testing, and the third will be tested soon. Virtual-SAP is being used for both research and education.
