Transformative artificially intelligent tools, such as ChatGPT, designed to generate sophisticated text indistinguishable from that produced by a human, are applicable across a wide range of contexts. The technology presents opportunities as well as, often ethical and legal, challenges, and has the potential for both positive and negative impacts for organisations, society, and individuals. Offering multi-disciplinary insight into some of these, this article brings together 43 contributions from experts in fields such as computer science, marketing, information systems, education, policy, hospitality and tourism, management, publishing, and nursing. The contributors acknowledge ChatGPT's capabilities to enhance productivity and suggest that it is likely to offer significant gains in the banking, hospitality and tourism, and information technology industries, and enhance business activities, such as management and marketing. Nevertheless, they also consider its limitations, disruptions to practices, threats to privacy and security, and consequences of biases, misuse, and misinformation. However, opinion is split on whether ChatGPT's use should be restricted or legislated. Drawing on these contributions, the article identifies questions requiring further research across three thematic areas: knowledge, transparency, and ethics;digital transformation of organisations and societies;and teaching, learning, and scholarly research. The avenues for further research include: identifying skills, resources, and capabilities needed to handle generative AI;examining biases of generative AI attributable to training datasets and processes;exploring business and societal contexts best suited for generative AI implementation;determining optimal combinations of human and generative AI for various tasks;identifying ways to assess accuracy of text produced by generative AI;and uncovering the ethical and legal issues in using generative AI across different contexts. © 2023 The Authors

On the performance and convergence of distributed stream processing via approximate fault tolerance

Fault tolerance is critical for distributed stream processing systems, yet achieving error-free fault tolerance often incurs substantial performance overhead. We present AF-Stream, a distributed stream processing system that addresses the trade-off between performance and accuracy in fault tolerance. AF-Stream builds on a notion called approximate fault tolerance, whose idea is to mitigate backup overhead by adaptively issuing backups, while ensuring that the errors upon failures are bounded with theoretical guarantees. Specifically, AF-Stream allows users to specify bounds on both the state divergence and the loss of non-backup streaming items. It issues state and item backups only when the bounds are reached. Our AF-Stream design provides an extensible programming model for incorporating general streaming algorithms as well as exports only few threshold parameters for configuring approximation fault tolerance. Furthermore, we formally prove that AF-Stream preserves high algorithm-specific accuracy of streaming algorithms, and in particular the convergence guarantees of online learning. Experiments show that AF-Stream maintains high performance (compared to no fault tolerance) and high accuracy after multiple failures (compared to no failures) under various streaming algorithms. The J/ψ→μ+μ−μ+μ− decay has been observed with a statistical significance in excess of five standard deviations. The analysis is based on an event sample of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, collected by the CMS experiment in 2018 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 33.6 fb−1. Normalizing to the J/ψ→μ+μ− decay mode leads to a branching fraction of [10.1−2.7+3.3(stat)±0.4(syst)]×10−7, a value that is consistent with the standard model prediction.

Multi-view Multi-instance Multi-label Learning(M3L) deals with complex objects encompassing diverse instances, represented with different feature views, and annotated with multiple labels. Existing M3L solutions only partially explore the inter or intra relations between objects (or bags), instances, and labels, which can convey important contextual information for M3L. As such, they may have a compromised performance. In this paper, we propose a collaborative matrix factorization based solution called M3Lcmf. M3Lcmf first uses a heterogeneous network composed of nodes of bags, instances, and labels, to encode different types of relations via multiple relational data matrices. To preserve the intrinsic structure of the data matrices, M3Lcmf collaboratively factorizes them into low-rank matrices, explores the latent relationships between bags, instances, and labels, and selectively merges the data matrices. An aggregation scheme is further introduced to aggregate the instance-level labels into bag-level and to guide the factorization. An empirical study on benchmark datasets show that M3Lcmf outperforms other related competitive solutions both in the instance-level and bag-level prediction. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. With the help of a power-domain non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) scheme, satellite networks can simultaneously serve multiple users within limited time/spectrum resource block. However, the existence of channel estimation errors inevitably degrade the judgment on users' channel state information (CSI) accuracy, thus affecting the user pairing processing and suppressing the superiority of the NOMA scheme. Inspired by the advantages ofmachine learning (ML) algorithms, we propose an improved support vector machine (SVM) scheme to reduce the inappropriate user pairing risks and enhance the performance of NOMA based satellite networks with imperfect CSI. Particularly, a genetic algorithm (GA) is employed to optimize the regularization and kernel parameters of the SVM, which effectively improves the classification accuracy of the proposed scheme. Simulations are provided to demonstrate that the performance of the proposed method is better than that with random user paring strategy, especially in the scenario with a large number of users. Capacitor banks are finding greater acceptability in application with the integration of many Ferro Silicon Industries in Bhutan; however, switching of capacitor banks is one of the most challenging operations because many inherent characteristics are accompanied with these events that needs to be studied carefully. This paper presents the switching transients of multi-step 3-phase back-to-back capacitor bank of 66/11kV Bhutan Silicon Metal Private Limited. Simulation were carried out to observe the magnitude of peak inrush current, frequency of transient oscillation and peak oscillating voltage during energizing/de-energizing of capacitor banks. The result shows that the magnitude is very high without current limiting reactor but with current limiting reactor the magnitude is reduced to a permissible limit thereby mechanical stresses to the nearby electrical equipment is reduced. Capacitor bank with grounded system is recommended because the transient recovery voltage and the rate of rise of recovery voltage across circuit breaker contact are less than the standard value of 2S kV and the limit of equipment capability 28 kV/75 μs = 0.37 kV/μs as per ANSI C37.06-2000.

A huge volume of data are being generated from multiple sources, including smart cities, the IoT devices, scientific modeling, or different big data simulations; but also from users' daily activities. These daily new data are added to historical repositories, providing the huge and complex universe of the digital data. Recently, the Fog-to-Cloud (F2C) data management architecture is envisioned to handle all big data complexities, from IoT devices (the closest layer to the users) to cloud technologies (the farthest layer to the IoT devices), as well as different data phases from creation to usage from fog to cloud scenario. Moreover, the F2C data management architecture can have several benefits from the combined advantages of fog (distributed) and cloud (centralized) technologies including reducing network traffic, reducing latencies drastically while improving security. In this paper, we have several novel contributions. First, we described the previous studies of the Zero Emission Buildings (ZEB) in the context of the data flow and movement architecture. Second, we have proposed Zero Emission Neighbourhoods (ZEN) data management architecture for smart city scenarios based on a distributed hierarchical F2C data management. Indeed, we used the 6Vs big data challenges (Volume, Variety, Velocity, Variability, Veracity, and Value) for evaluating the data management architectures (including ZEB and ZEN). The result of the evaluation shows that our proposed ZEN data management architecture can address 6Vs challenges and is able to manage the data lifecycle from its production up to its usage.

Compact cities adopt high density, mixed land use and transit-oriented development (TOD). For sustainable development, compact development reduces the use of automobile and lessens the overdevelopment of land resources. For solving urban sprawl and housing shortage, more and more metropolises have adopted compact development. Academics, planners and policy makers mainly focused on evaluating the impacts of neighborhood attributes on housing prices and residential movements. Few have examined the relationships between residents' demand and residential attractiveness in compact cities. Therefore, this study develops Residential Attractiveness Evaluation (RAE) Model to evaluate the attractive degree of urban areas based on residents' demand in compact cities. Hong Kong is chosen as the study area which is a typical compact city. The results show that districts near the CBD and both sides of Victoria Harbor have highest residential attractiveness than other areas. Community planners and policy makers should consider residential attractiveness based on residents' demand in efforts to promote sustainable development. Residential attractiveness is the foundation of residential land use planning and policies. Planners in compact cities should adopt various planning strategies according to different residential attractiveness. Moreover, residential attractiveness is the benchmark of evaluating residents' satisfaction of new residential planning and policies.

The analysis of the perceptual properties of texture plays a fundamental role in tasks where some interaction with subjects is needed. In order to face the imprecision related to these properties, several fuzzy approaches can be found in the literature, but they do not properly take into account the subjectivity of users. In this paper, a generic technique is proposed in order to adapt any multidimensional fuzzy set to the different perceptions of texture properties that a particular user can have. This way, we combine the improvement in the texture characterization given by the use of several computational measures as reference set with the adaptation to the subjectivity of the human perception. In the proposed adaptation method, the membership functions are automatically transformed on the basic of the information given by the user. © 2017 IEEE.
