Predictability performance enhancement for suspended sediment in rivers: Inspection of newly developed hybrid adaptive neuro-fuzzy system model

Reliable modeling of river sediments transport is important as it is a defining factor of the economic viability of dams, the durability of hydroelectric-equipment, river susceptibility to pollution, suitability for navigation, and potential for aesthetics and fish habitat. The capability of a new machine learning model, fuzzy c-means based neuro-fuzzy system calibrated using the hybrid particle swarm optimization-gravitational search algorithm（ANFIS-FCM-PSOGSA） in improving the estimation accuracy of river suspended sediment loads（SSLs） is investigated in the current study. The outcomes of the proposed method were compared with those obtained using the fuzzy c-means based neuro-fuzzy system calibrated using particle swarm optimization（ANFIS-FCM-PSO）, ANFIS-FCM, and sediment rating curve（SRC） models. Various input combinations involving lagged river flow（Q） and suspended sediment（S） values were used for model development. The effect of Q and S on the model's accuracy also was assessed by including the difference between lagged Q and S values as inputs. The model performance was assessed using the root mean square error（RMSE）, mean absolute error（MAE）, Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency（NSE）, and coefficient of determination（R2） and several graphical comparison methods. The results showed that the proposed model enhanced the prediction performance of the ANFIS-FCM-PSO（or ANFIS-FCM） models by 8.14%（1.72%）, 14.7%（5.71%）, 12.5%（2.27%）, and 25.6%（1.86%）,in terms of the RMSE, MAE, NSE and R2, respectively. The current study established the potential of the proposed ANFIS-FCM-PSOGSA model for simulation of the cumulative sediment load. The modeling results revealed the potential effects of the river flow lags on the sediment transport quantification.

Effective power control is key to solving the inter-user interference problem that degrades performance in cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. Motivated by its ability to operate online and model-free, without relying on training datasets, we leverage deep reinforcement learning (DRL) for uplink power control, aiming to maximize the guaranteed rate. We propose a fully centralized single-agent framework and two distributed schemes that employ several agents for improved scalability, leveraging prioritized experience replay to enable fast adaptation to the dynamic changes of the wireless environment. We investigate the performance of two multi-agent system architectures: (1) centralized training, decentralized execution (CTDE), where each agent forwards its RL experience to a central trainer, and (2) personalized federated learning (FedPer), where the training is performed locally at each agent, and only the base layer of the local deep neural network (DNN) model is forwarded periodically for aggregation at a server. We focus on the realistic scenario of dynamic device (de-)activation, combined with user mobility. Numerical evaluations demonstrate that the proposed FedPer with prioritized sampling achieves near-optimal rate and power performance while incurring the least amount of communication overhead. © 2015 IEEE.

The increasing prevalence of botnet attacks in IoT networks has led to the development of deep learning techniques for their detection. However, conventional centralized deep learning models pose challenges in simultaneously ensuring user data privacy and detecting botnet attacks. To address this issue, this study evaluates the efficacy of Federated Learning (FL) in detecting IoT malware traffic while preserving user privacy. The study employs N-BaIoT, a dataset of real-world IoT network traffic infected by malware, and compares the effectiveness of FL models using Convolutional Neural Network, Long Short-Term Memory, and Gated Recurrent Unit models with a centralized approach. The results indicate that FL can achieve high performance in detecting abnormal traffic in IoT networks, with the CNN model yielding the best results among the three models evaluated. The study recommends the use of FL for IoT malware traffic detection due to its ability to preserve data privacy. © 2024 Global IT Research Institute - GIRI.

Silicosis, a debilitating occupational lung disease caused by inhaling crystalline silica, continues to be a significant global health issue, especially with the increasing use of engineered stone (ES) surfaces containing high silica content. Traditional diagnostic methods, dependent on radiological interpretation, have low sensitivity, especially, in the early stages of the disease, and present variability between evaluators. This study explores the efficacy of deep learning techniques in automating the screening and staging of silicosis using chest X-ray images. Utilizing a comprehensive dataset, obtained from the medical records of a cohort of workers exposed to artificial quartz conglomerates, we implemented a preprocessing stage for rib-cage segmentation, followed by classification using state-of-the-art deep learning models. The segmentation model exhibited high precision, ensuring accurate identification of thoracic structures. In the screening phase, our models achieved near-perfect accuracy, with ROC AUC values reaching 1.0, effectively distinguishing between healthy individuals and those with silicosis. The models demonstrated remarkable precision in the staging of the disease. Nevertheless, differentiating between simple silicosis and progressive massive fibrosis, the evolved and complicated form of the disease, presented certain difficulties, especially during the transitional period, when assessment can be significantly subjective. Notwithstanding these difficulties, the models achieved an accuracy of around 81% and ROC AUC scores nearing 0.93. This study highlights the potential of deep learning to generate clinical decision support tools to increase the accuracy and effectiveness in the diagnosis and staging of silicosis, whose early detection would allow the patient to be moved away from all sources of occupational exposure, therefore constituting a substantial advancement in occupational health diagnostics. © 2025 The Authors

The distributed optimization algorithm proposed by J. Wang and N. Elia in 2010 has been shown to achieve linear convergence for multi-agent systems with single-integrator dynamics. This paper extends their result, including the linear convergence rate, to a more complex scenario where the agents have heterogeneous multi-input multi-output linear dynamics and are subject to external disturbances and parametric uncertainties. Disturbances are dealt with via an internal-model-based control design, and the interaction among the tracking error dynamics, average dynamics, and dispersion dynamics is analyzed through a composite Lyapunov function and the cyclic small-gain theorem. The key is to ensure a small enough stepsize for the convergence of the proposed algorithm, which is similar to the condition for time-scale separation in singular perturbation theory.

Large scale artificial intelligence (AI) models possess excellent capabilities in semantic representation and understanding, making them particularly well-suited for semantic encoding and decoding. However, the substantial scale of these AI models imposes unacceptable computational resources and communication delays. To address this issue, we propose a semantic communication scheme based on robust knowledge distillation (RKD-SC) for large scale model enabled semantic communications. In the considered system, a transmitter extracts the features of the source image for robust transmission and accurate image classification at the receiver. To effectively utilize the superior capability of large scale model while make the cost affordable, we first transfer knowledge from a large scale model to a smaller scale model to serve as the semantic encoder. Then, to enhance the robustness of the system against channel noise, we propose a channel-aware autoencoder (CAA) based on the Transformer architecture. Experimental results show that the encoder of proposed RKD-SC system can achieve over 93.3% of the performance of a large scale model while compressing 96.67% number of parameters. Online programming system for robotic fillet welding in Industry 4.0

Purpose - Fillet welding is one of the most widespread types of welding in the industry, which is still carried out manually or automated by contact. This paper aims to describe an online programming system for noncontact fillet welding robots with "U"- and "L"-shaped structures, which responds to the needs of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Design/methodology/approach - In this paper, the authors propose an online robot programming methodology that eliminates unnecessary steps traditionally performed in robotic welding, so that the operator only performs three steps to complete the welding task. First, choose the piece to weld. Then, enter the welding parameters. Finally, it sends the automatically generated program to the robot. Findings - The system finally managed to perform the fillet welding task with the proposed method in a more efficient preparation time than the compared methods. For this, a reduced number of components was used compared to other systems: a structured light 3 D camera, two computers and a concentrator, in addition to the six-axis industrial robotic arm. The operating complexity of the system has been reduced as much as possible. Practical implications - To the best of the authors' knowledge, there is no scientific or commercial evidence of an online robot programming system capable of performing a fillet welding process, simplifying the process so that it is completely transparent for the operator and framed in the Industry 4.0 paradigm. Its commercial potential lies mainly in its simple and low-cost implementation in a flexible system capable of adapting to any industrial fillet welding job and to any support that can accommodate it. Typically, grid-connected wind turbines equipped with permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) present a back-to-back power converter based on voltage-source converters. In this paper, this structure is modified using an uncontrolled rectifier for the AC/DC conversion in the generator, and a quasi-Z-source inverter (qZSI) at the grid side. The qZSI is an attractive solution to boost and convert DC voltage to AC in a single stage. The main objective of the paper is the application of a qZSI for large grid-connected wind energy systems. In this configuration, active and reactive powers can be controlled through a Space Vector Modulation technique adapted for Z-source converter. Simulations were performed using MATLAB/Simulink® with wind and load variations to confirm the proper functioning of the proposed controllers. The results showed satisfactory responses of the proposed 5 MW PMSG-driven grid-connected wind turbine. © 2020 IEEE.

Visible light positioning (VLP) is a promising positioning technique, which, however, typically requires multiple luminaires to achieve accurate positioning. This paper proposes a novel visual odometry (VO) assisted visible light positioning algorithm (VO-VLP) in achieving positioning with only a single luminaire. In the considered model, a user equipped with a camera jointly uses geometric features in the captured images and coordinates information obtained via visible light communication (VLC) for positioning. The proposed VLP algorithm does not rely on any extra inertial measurement unit and relaxes the tilted angle limitation at the user. In particular, VO-VLP first uses the circle feature of a luminaire to obtain dual normal vectors of the luminaire. Then, the basic principle of VO is used to eliminate the wrong normal vector by exploiting the geometric features in two consecutive images captured when the user moves. Finally, the pose and location of the user are obtained by using an artificially marked point on the luminaire's contour. VO-VLP can achieve accurate positioning with only a single luminaire and a camera. Simulation results show that the proposed indoor positioning algorithm can achieve a 97th-percentile positioning accuracy of around 10 cm.

The quantification of biomarkers on immunohistochemistry breast cancer images is essential for defining appropriate therapy for breast cancer patients, as well as for extracting relevant information on disease prognosis. This is an arduous and time-consuming task that may introduce a bias in the results due to intra- and inter-observer variability which could be alleviated by making use of automatic quantification tools. However, this is not a simple processing task given the heterogeneity of breast tumors that results in non-uniformly distributed tumor cells exhibiting different staining colors and intensity, size, shape, and texture, of the nucleus, cytoplasm and membrane. In this research work we demonstrate the feasibility of using a deep learning-based instance segmentation architecture for the automatic quantification of both nuclear and membrane biomarkers applied to IHC-stained slides. We have solved the cumbersome task of training set generation with the design and implementation of a web platform, which has served as a hub for communication and feedback between researchers and pathologists as well as a system for the validation of the automatic image processing models. Through this tool, we have collected annotations over samples of HE, ER and Ki-67 (nuclear biomarkers) and HER2 (membrane biomarker) IHC-stained images. Using the same deep learning network architecture, we have trained two models, so-called nuclei- and membrane-aware segmentation models, which, once successfully validated, have revealed to be a promising method to segment nuclei instances in IHC-stained images. The quantification method proposed in this work has been integrated into the developed web platform and is currently being used as a decision support tool by pathologists. © 2023, CC BY-NC-ND.
