The QoS-aware web service composition is an important topic that is intensively discussed in the last ten years. The approach of Canfora, for example, solves this problem in an acceptable time period. The lack of most of the approaches for a QoS-aware composition is, however, that they completely ignore monitoring and user feedback for single web services. In this paper the idea of taking monitoring and user feedback into account while composing web services will be introduced.

In an incident scene ad hoc network, mobility of on-scene first responders induces dynamic topology for their carried communication devices. This dynamics has significant impact on network connectivity, quality of communication and resource allocation. In performing evaluation of such networks as distributed systems, it is crucial to use mobility models derived from realistic use cases. In this paper, we examine properties of public safety incidents and discover unique characteristics of associated mobility patterns. Our first goal is to understand how first responders' mobility is influenced by a variety of factors, such as transportation, environmental, and operational factors. Our second goal is to determine and recommend a comprehensive set of parameters to characterize first responder mobility at an incident scene. The set of parameters we suggest includes both personnel and event characteristics. We also show the relationship and interaction between them. This set of parameters can subsequently be used in mobility generation tools for simulation studies. Our main contribution is to characterize the mobility pattern for first responders in incident scenes as a mission-specific, environment-aware and event-driven adaptation process.

In many applications of wireless ad hoc networks, wireless nodes are owned by rational and intelligent users. In this paper, we call nodes selfish if they are owned by independent users and their only objective is to maximize their individual goals. In such situations, it may not be possible to use the existing protocols for wireless ad hoc networks as these protocols assume that nodes follow the prescribed protocol without deviation. Stimulating cooperation among these nodes is an interesting and challenging problem. Providing incentives and pricing the transactions are well known approaches to stimulate cooperation. In this paper, we present a game theoretic framework for truthful broadcast protocol and strategy proof pricing mechanism called immediate predecessor node pricing mechanism (IPNPM). The phrase strategy proof here means that truth revelation of cost is a weakly dominant-strategy (in game theoretic terms) for each node. In order to steer our mechanism-design approach towards practical implementation, we compute the payments to nodes using a distributed algorithm. We also propose a new protocol for broadcast in wireless ad hoc network with selfish nodes based on IPNPM. The features of the proposed broadcast protocol are reliability and a significantly reduced number of packet forwards compared to the number of network nodes, which in turn leads to less system-wide power consumption to broadcast a single packet. Our simulation results show the efficacy of the proposed broadcast protocol

Current high speed networks cannot be fully utilized by today's high end systems. The processing requirements of next generation network protocols require intelligent network cards with network protocol offload engines, for example based on a network processor. To reduce development time, we reuse existing software protocol stack implementations for partitioning and implementing on the network card. Though, manual partitioning is very time-consuming due to the complex protocol stacks. We outline an approach for tool supported software partitioning even for complex C source code.

This paper describes a music searching system based on an automatic indexing process created over a pattern recognition tool and MPEG-7 standard. We present a complete analysis of the involved technologies integration process and show a reference measure in the feasibility of this kind of application not only in the research environment but also in the production of real systems.

Gigabit networks can not be fully utilized by today's end systems. The processing requirements of next generation network protocols with enabled encryption features will aggravate this situation. To overcome these shortcomings this paper presents an approach and prototype implementation for hardware support of IP/IPsec protocols. We out-line a hardware/software partitioning, where the data path of the IP/IPsec protocol is accelerated by a network processor. In contrast to other approaches, we reuse existing software protocol stack implementations.

Future network should be able to efficiently serve packet-based networks, such as the Internet. In this paper, based on results from COST 266, we explore characteristics of Optical Burst switching (OBS) and Optical Packet Switching (OPS). Both node design and Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) are discussed. A unique joint comparative performance evaluation of contention resolution in OBS and OPS are presented, as well as methods of Quality of Service (QoS) differentiation in OBS/OPS networks, and their performance. © 2003, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc. Considering video transmission over an ATM network for a video on demand system, we propose a server of quality (SoQ) that has the main function of fitting the video transmission rate to the available network bandwidth. The SoQ uses a "backpropagation" neural network to fit the MPEG quantization coefficients in a nonlinear way. Here are shown the SoQ specification and the results obtained from its main module implementation.

In this paper we present methods to evaluate the benefit of using direct ATM connections (shortcuts) between IP nodes in IP over ATM networks, and we identify the combinations of IP and ATM network topologies where ATM shortcut benefits are likely to be high. We model an IP/ATM network with and without ATM shortcuts as two loss networks. We propose a metric for network performance comparison, the network load ratio, that gives the ratio of the number of flows accepted by two networks at the same network blocking probability. We derive an estimator of this metric, the asymptotic load ratio, that has low computational complexity. This estimator forms the basis of a methodology for network performance comparison. We use this method in simulation experiments using random networks. These experiments indicate that in many cases the utilization of an IP/ATM network increases proportionally to the decrease in the average path length when ATM shortcuts are used. We have also found that there is almost no correlation between the increase in network utilization (when using ATM shortcuts) and the IP to ATM node ratio.

Statistical multiplexing in packet-switched networks creates problems for packetized voice streams by introducing variable delays on delivered packets. The resulting jitter needs to be filtered so that received voice packets can be reconstructed as a continuous stream at the receiver. One common approach to reconstruction is to play back the receiver voice data after a delay offset from the departure time at the source of the packet stream. While the added delay helps filter jitter, one cannot introduce too much delay, otherwise, interactiveness suffers. This paper presents a new technique to find the necessary delay offset (or play-back delay) to recreate the original voice data stream. This technique gives the user control over the fraction of packets that should arrive in time to be played back so that the added play-back delay can be effectively minimized.
