Affinity-Based Network Interfaces for Efficient Communication on Multicore architectures

Improving the network interface performance is needed by the demand of applications with high communication requirements （for example, some multimedia, real-time, and high-performance computing applications）, and the availability of network links providing multiple gigabits per second bandwidths that could require many processor cycles for communication tasks. Multicore architectures, the current trend in the microprocessor development to cope with the difficulties to further increase clock frequencies and microarchitecture efficiencies, provide new opportunities to exploit the parallelism available in the nodes for designing efficient communication architectures. Nevertheless, although present OS network stacks include multiple threads that make it possible to execute network tasks concurrently in the kernel, the implementations of packet-based or connection-based parallelism are not trivial as they have to take into account issues related with the cost of synchronization in the access to shared resources and the efficient use of caches. Therefore, a common trend in many recent researches on this topic is to assign network interrupts and the corresponding protocol and network application processing to the same core, as with this affinity scheduling it would be possible to reduce the contention for shared resources and the cache misses. In this paper we propose and analyze several configurations to distribute the network interface among the different cores available in the server. These alternatives have been devised according to the affinity of the corresponding communication tasks with the location （proximity to the memories where the different data structures are stored） and characteristics of the processing core. As this approach uses several cores to accelerate the communication path of a given connection, it can be seen as complementary to those that consider several cores to simultaneously process packets belonging to either the same or different connections.

By means of the availability of mechanisms such as Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling (DVFS) and heterogeneous architectures including processors with different power consumption profiles, it is possible to devise scheduling algorithms that are aware of both runtime and energy consumption in parallel programs. In this paper, we propose and evaluate a multi-objective (more specifically, a bi-objective) approach to distribute the workload among the processing cores in a given heterogeneous parallel CPU-GPU architecture. The aim of this distribution may be either to save energy without increasing the running time or to reach a trade-off among time and energy consumption. The parallel programs considered here are master-worker evolutionary algorithms where the evaluation of the fitness function for the individuals in the population demands the most part of the computing time. As many useful bioinformatics and data mining applications exhibit this kind of parallel profile, the proposed energy-aware approach for workload scheduling could be frequently applied. © 2018 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Computational simulations of the retina have led to valuable insights about the biophysics of its neuronal activity and processing principles. A great number of retina models have been proposed to reproduce the behavioral diversity of the different visual processing pathways. While many of these models share common computational stages, previous efforts have been more focused on fitting specific retina functions rather than generalizing them beyond a particular model. Here, we define a set of computational retinal microcircuits that can be used as basic building blocks for the modeling of different retina mechanisms. To validate the hypothesis that similar processing structures may be repeatedly found in different retina functions, we implemented a series of retina models simply by combining these computational retinal microcircuits. Accuracy of the retina models for capturing neural behavior was assessed by fitting published electrophysiological recordings that characterize some of the best-known phenomena observed in the retina: adaptation to the mean light intensity and temporal contrast, and differential motion sensitivity. The retinal microcircuits are part of a new software platform for efficient computational retina modeling from single-cell to large-scale levels. It includes an interface with spiking neural networks that allows simulation of the spiking response of ganglion cells and integration with models of higher visual areas. © 2016 World Scientific Publishing Company.

This paper shows the design and implementation of ser- vices for Evolutionary Computation following the Service Oriented architecture paradigm. This paradigm allows in- dependence over language and distribution mechanism. This development is challenging because some technological and design issues, such as abstract design or unordered execu- tion. To solve them, OSGiLiath, an implementation of an abstract Service Oriented architecture for Evolutionary Al- gorithms, is used to develop new interoperable services tak- ing into account these restrictions.

Affymetrix High Oligonucleotide expression arrays are widely used for the high-throughput assessment of gene expression of thousands of genes simultaneously. Although disputed by several authors, there are non-biological variations and systematic biases that must be removed as much as possible through the pre-processing step before an absolute expression level for every gene is assessed. It is important to evaluate microarray pre-processing procedures not only to the detection of differentially expressed genes, but also to classification, since a major use of microarrays is the expression-based phenotype classification. Thus, in this paper, we use several cancer microarray datasets to assess the influence of five different pre-processing methods in Support Vector Machine-based classification methodologies with different kernels: linear, Radial Basis Functions (RBFs) and polynomial. © 2010 IEEE.

ATOPE+: An mHealth System to Support Personalized Therapeutic Exercise Interventions in Patients with Cancer

The introduction of mobile technologies in therapeutic exercise interventions has permitted the collection of fine-grained objective quantified information about patients' health. However, exercise interventions generally fail to leverage these data when personalizing the exercise needs of patients individually. Interventions that include technology-driven personalization strategies typically rely on the use of expensive laboratory equipment with expert supervision, or in the self-management of patients to meet the prescribed exercise levels by an activity tracker. These methods often do not perform better than non technology-driven methods, therefore more sophisticated strategies are required to improve the personalization process. In this paper we present ATOPE+, an mHealth system to support personalized exercise interventions in patients with cancer based on workload-recovery ratio estimation. ATOPE+ enables the remote assessment of workload-recovery ratio to provide optimal exercise dosage by means of a knowledge-based system and by combining physiological data from heterogeneous data sources in a multilevel architecture. The results show that ATOPE+ is a system ready to be used in the context of a clinical trial after being tested with patients with breast cancer and conducting an usability evaluation by clinical experts. © 2013 IEEE.

There are two main research issues in the game of Mastermind: one of them is finding solutions that are able to minimize the number of turns needed to find the solution, and another is finding methods that scale well when the size of the search space is increased. In this paper we will present a method that uses evolutionary algorithms to find fast solutions to the game of Mastermind that scale better with problem size than previously described methods;this is obtained by just fixing one parameter. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

It is not usual practice in the evolutionary algorithms area to benchmark different operations in order to choose the best language for a single or multilanguage implementation. Researchers rely instead on common practice or frameworks using mainstream languages. That is why it is usual practice to choose compiled languages (namely Java or C/C++) when implementing evolutionary algorithms, without considering other languages or rejecting them outright on the basis of performance. Since there is a myriad of languages nowadays, we considered it an interesting challenge to measure their speed when performing frequent operations in evolutionary algorithms. In this paper we have tested three basic evolutionary algorithm operations over binary chromosomes: bitflip mutation, crossover and the OneMax fitness function. As a performance measure, the speed for both popular and not so popular computer languages have been used. In general, the results confirm that compiled languages scale and perform better, but also in some cases have a behaviour that is independent of the size of the chromosome. Additionally, results show that other languages, such as Go (compiled) or Python (interpreted) are fast enough for most purposes. Besides, these experiments show which of these operations are, in fact, the best for choosing an implementation language based on its performance. © 2016 IEEE.

This paper presents an approach, based in a project in development, which combines Data Mining, Machine Learning and Computational Intelligence techniques, in order to create a user-centric and adaptable corporate security system. Thus, the system, named MUSES, will be able to analyse the user's behaviour (modelled as events) when interacting with the company's server, accessing to corporate assets, for instance. As a result of this analysis, and after the application of the aforementioned techniques, the Corporate Security Policies, and specifically, the Corporate Security Rules will be adapted to deal with new anomalous situations, or to better manage user's behaviour. The work reviews the current state of the art in security issues resolution by means of these kind of methods. Then it describes the MUSES features in this respect and compares them with the existing approaches.
