Affinity-Based Network Interfaces for Efficient Communication on Multicore architectures

Improving the network interface performance is needed by the demand of applications with high communication requirements （for example, some multimedia, real-time, and high-performance computing applications）, and the availability of network links providing multiple gigabits per second bandwidths that could require many processor cycles for communication tasks. Multicore architectures, the current trend in the microprocessor development to cope with the difficulties to further increase clock frequencies and microarchitecture efficiencies, provide new opportunities to exploit the parallelism available in the nodes for designing efficient communication architectures. Nevertheless, although present OS network stacks include multiple threads that make it possible to execute network tasks concurrently in the kernel, the implementations of packet-based or connection-based parallelism are not trivial as they have to take into account issues related with the cost of synchronization in the access to shared resources and the efficient use of caches. Therefore, a common trend in many recent researches on this topic is to assign network interrupts and the corresponding protocol and network application processing to the same core, as with this affinity scheduling it would be possible to reduce the contention for shared resources and the cache misses. In this paper we propose and analyze several configurations to distribute the network interface among the different cores available in the server. These alternatives have been devised according to the affinity of the corresponding communication tasks with the location （proximity to the memories where the different data structures are stored） and characteristics of the processing core. As this approach uses several cores to accelerate the communication path of a given connection, it can be seen as complementary to those that consider several cores to simultaneously process packets belonging to either the same or different connections.

The escalating frequency of geological disasters, local conflicts, and public health crises necessitates robust emergency communication systems within Internet of Things (IoT) frameworks to ensure public safety. Employing Power-Domain NOMA (PD-NOMA) and Successive Interference Cancellation (SIC) enables effective multi-device communication that is crucial for emergency responses. However, the practical implementation of NOMA technologies in emergency scenarios is hindered by existing resource constraints and the requirement of prioritizing critical emergency information. To address these limitations, we propose a multi-objective optimization-based NOMA framework to maximize network throughput while ensuring quality of service (QoS) and energy efficiency. This framework incorporates a novel communication grouping algorithm based on queue penalty optimization and an Actor-Critic-based dynamic updating algorithm for multiple resource allocation. Our study proposes a practical approach to enhance emergency communication in disaster areas, ensuring efficient and reliable network performance under various constraints.

Trikarenos: Design and Experimental Characterization of a Fault-Tolerant 28nm RISC-V-based SoC

RISC-V-based fault-tolerant system-on-chip (SoC) designs are critical for the new generation of automotive and space SoC architectures. However, reliability assessment requires characterization under controlled radiation doses to accurately quantify the fault tolerance of the fabricated designs. This work analyzes the Trikarenos design, a SoC implemented in TSMC 28nm, for single event upset (SEU) vulnerability under atmospheric neutron and 200MeV proton radiation, comparing these results to simulation-based fault injection. All faults in error correction codes (ECC) protected memory are corrected by a scrubber, showing an estimated cross-section per bit of up to 1.09 × 10⁻¹⁴ cm² bit⁻¹. Furthermore, the triple-core lockstep (TCLS) mechanism implemented in Trikarenos is validated and is shown to correct errors affecting a cross-section up to 3.23 × 10⁻¹¹ cm², with the remaining uncorrectable vulnerability below 5.36 × 10⁻¹² cm². When augmenting the experimental analysis of fabricated chips with gate-level fault injection in simulation, 99.10% of injections into the SoC produced correct results, while 100% of injections in the TCLS-protected cores were handled *** 12.28%of all injected faults leading to a TCLS recovery, this indicates an approximate effective flip-flop cross-section of up to 1.28 × 10⁻¹⁴ cm²/FF. © 1963-2012 IEEE.

Effect of Noisy Fitness in Real-Time Strategy Games Player Behaviour Optimisation Using Evolutionary Algorithms

This paper investigates the performance and the results of an evolutionary algorithm （EA） specifically designed for evolving the decision engine of a program （which, in this context, is called bot） that plays Planet Wars. This game, which was chosen for the Google Artificial Intelligence Challenge in 2010, requires the bot to deal with multiple target planets, while achieving a certain degree of adaptability in order to defeat different opponents in different scenarios. The decision engine of the bot is initially based on a set of rules that have been defined after an empirical study, and a genetic algorithm （GA） is used for tuning the set of constants, weights and probabilities that those rules include, and therefore, the general behaviour of the bot. Then, the bot is supplied with the evolved decision engine and the results obtained when competing with other bots （a bot offered by Google as a sparring partner, and a scripted bot with a pre-established behaviour） are thoroughly analysed. The evaluation of the candidate solutions is based on the result of non-deterministic battles （and environmental interactions） against other bots, whose outcome depends on random draws as well as on the opponents＇ actions. Therefore, the proposed GA is dealing with a noisy fitness function. After analysing the effects of the noisy fitness, we conclude that tackling randomness via repeated combats and reevaluations reduces this effect and makes the GA a highly valuable approach for solving this problem.

Community question answering(CQA)has provided an increasingly popular service where users ask and answer questions and access historical questionanswer *** a fundamental task in CQA,question similarity measure is to compute the similarity between the queried question and the historical questions which have been solved by other *** mine and use the most important semantic features as the semantic representation of questions,and try to incorporate the couplings of semantic features into vector space *** propose Coupled question similarity(CQS) model,and compute the similarity in matrix factorization *** conducted on real CQA data sets demonstrate that with the incorporation of such couplings,the performance of sentence similarity is improved compared to a variety of baseline methods significantly.

Comparison of selected algorithms for scheduling workflow applications with dynamically changing service availability

This paper compares the quality and execution times of several algorithms for scheduling service based workflow applications with changeable service availability and parameters. A workflow is defined as an acyclic directed graph with nodes corresponding to tasks and edges to dependencies between tasks. For each task, one out of several available services needs to be chosen and scheduled to minimize the workflow execution time and keep the cost of service within the budget. During the execution of a workflow, some services may become unavailable, new ones may appear, and costs and execution times may change with a certain probability. Rescheduling is needed to obtain a better schedule. A solution is proposed on how integer linear programming can be used to solve this problem to obtain optimal solutions for smaller problems or suboptimal solutions for larger ones. It is compared side-by-side with GAIN, divide-and-conquer, and genetic algorithms for various probabilities of service unavailability or change in service parameters. The algorithms are implemented and subsequently tested in a real BeesyCluster environment.

Integrating artificial neural networks and neighborhood analysis for enhanced urban growth prediction depending on planned future development areas: A case study of Ar-Ramtha, Jordan

Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing urban planning by enhancing the simulation of urban growth and land-use changes. Most AI models often fail to predict how proposed development areas will shape future expansion, leading to misaligned planning and urban sprawl. This study addresses these gaps by integrating master plans and spatial policies into an AI-driven urban growth model for Ar-Ramtha. A hybrid model combining artificial neural networks (ANN) and neighborhood analysis was developed to assess the influence of proposed development areas. Historical data (1990–2005) was used for training and validation, while 2005–2020 data was used for testing. Under-sampling techniques addressed data imbalance, and the PLADJ matrix measured urban growth patterns. Results indicate that incorporating neighborhood analysis and development areas improves model accuracy, achieving a validation accuracy of 92.9 %, an F1-micro of 91.0 %, and a Kappa of 82.1 %. Testing performance remained strong, with an F1-micro of 84.0 % and an accuracy of 91.2 %. Simulations suggest Ar-Ramtha is becoming more compact, with PLADJ values rising from 80.67 % in 2020 to 92.7 % by 2035. However, potential sprawl risks remain due to increased road paving and rising land prices. The study recommends defining development areas based on AI model predictions beyond current planning boundaries and adopting a ring road strategy to promote compact urban growth. These findings contribute to bridging gaps in AI-based urban modeling by improving the integration of planning policies, offering a robust tool for sustainable urban development.

DESIGN, SIMULATION AND ANALYSIS OF RSESS NETWORK

This paper proposes a packet switching MIMD interconnection network called RSESS (Reverse Shuffle Exchange Supershuffle) network and presents some results of simulation and analysis of it. RSESS network has low hardware complexity O(N log(logN)) and short average delay. It benefits localized communication to a great extent. With an increase in the amount of locality of communication the network delay decreases *** important properties of favouring localized communication and being adaptable to a wide range of interconnection requests make RSESS network promising for packet communilation computers in which communications are localized. Using RSESS network, we can achieve high efficiency of communication and load sharing evenness.

To enhance the capacity of wireless mesh networks,a key technique is widely investigated which is the usage of multi-radio and multi-channel *** this paper,a new parallel scheduling system is proposed which exploits MAC diversities by transmitting packets on the radios *** with conventional packet transmission which follows 'one flow one radio',the new system uses radio diversity to transmit the packets on different radios *** kernel components of this system are selection module and schedule module.A localized selecting algorithm is implemented in the selection model to choose the right radios based on the quality of wireless links; two distributed packet-scheduling algorithms are optional with the schedule ***,a routing metric adapting this system is *** have carried out a comprehensive performance evaluation of this system using *** results show that it can successfully harness diversity of multi-radio and multi-channel to provide considerable improvements over a baseline multi-channel system in several situations.
