Neutrino detectors participate in the indirect search for the fundamental constituents of dark matter (DM) in form of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs). In WIMP scenarios, candidate DM particles can pair-annihilate into Standard Model products, yielding considerable fluxes of high-energy neutrinos. A detector like ANTARES, located in the Northern Hemisphere, is able to perform a competitive search looking towards the Galactic Centre, where a high density of dark matter is thought to accumulate. Both this directional information and the spectral features of annihilating DM pairs are entered into an unbinned likelihood method to scan the data set in search for DM-like signals in ANTARES data. Results obtained upon unblinding 11 years of data are presented. A non-observation of dark matter is converted into limits on the velocity-averaged cross section for WIMP pair annihilation. Summary Bioinformatics applications frequently involve high-dimensional model building or classification problems that require reducing dimensionality to improve learning accuracy while irrelevant inputs are removed. Thus, feature selection has become an important issue on these applications. Moreover, several approaches for supervised and unsupervised feature selections as a multi-objective optimization problem have been recently proposed to cope with issues on performance evaluation of classifiers and models. As parallel processing constitutes an important tool to reach efficient approaches that make it possible to tackle complex problems within reasonable computing times, in this paper, alternatives for the cooperation of subpopulations in multi-objective evolutionary algorithms have been identified and classified, and several procedures have been implemented and evaluated on some synthetic and Brain-computer Interface datasets. The results show different improvements achieved in the solution quality and speedups, depending on the cooperation alternative and dataset. We show alternatives that even provide superlinear speedups with only small reductions in the solution quality, besides another cooperation alternative that improves the quality of the solutions with speedups similar to, or only slightly higher than, the speedup obtained by the parallel fitness evaluation in a master-worker implementation (the alternative used as reference that behaves as the corresponding sequential multi-objective approach). © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Multiple recent neuroimaging studies revealed that functional interactions within brain regions are locally clustered into small sub-networks where different dynamics of functional interaction occur. However, integration models investigating such functional brain dynamics have been rarely explored. In this paper, a novel Bayesian inference model is developed to partition the brain regions into different sub networks and to simultaneously segment temporal sequence of each sub network into several quasi-stable blocks based on the interaction dynamics among regions. The proposed model has been evaluated and validated by two different simulation models. Also, the model has been applied to a working-memory task-based fMRI dataset and interesting results on both dynamic sub networks and change points were obtained. © 2015 IEEE.

This paper introduces and compares two types of GML-based data standards for indoor location-based services, i.e., iIndoorGML and iIndoorLocationGML. By elaborating the advantages of the both standards and their data models, we conclude that the two data standards are complementary to each other. A jointed data model is presented to show the integration of the two standards. iIndoorGML can supply subdivision of building for data of iIndoorLocationGML, and the semantics of locations defined in iIndoorLocationGML can be added to iIndoorGML. By proposing two use cases, we take the initiative in attempting to combine the use of the two standards. The first case is to collect details from files of the two standards for an indoor path;the second one is to generate verbal directions for indoor guidance from files of the two standards. Some future work is given for further development, such as automatic integration of separate data from both standards. © Authors 2017.

We designed a wearable vest that houses a set of actuators to be placed at specific points on the body. We developed vibrotactile patterns to induce five sensation types: (1) Calming, (2 patterns, Up and Down back) (2) Feel Good (4 patterns in different directions around the waist), (3) Activating (2 patterns, Tarzan and Shiver, on top front of body and then down the back as well for Shiver), (4) Navigation (2 patterns, Turn Left and Turn Right, prompting on back then opposite side front waist) for full body turning and (5) Warning, (1 pattern on solar plexus) to slow down or stop the wearers. We made an overlap between the pulses, which were of longer durations than the short burst saltation pulses designed to induce muscle movement. Our participants responded well to the Calming and Feel Good patterns, but reported mixed responses to Activation, Navigation and Warning patterns. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

In the past years, the IceCube Collaboration has reported in several analyses the observation of astrophysical high-energy neutrino events. Despite a compelling evidence for the first identification of a neutrino source, TXS 0506+056, the origin of the majority of these events is still unknown. In this paper, a possible transient origin of the IceCube astrophysical events is searched for using neutrino events detected by the ANTARES telescope. The arrival time and direction of 6894 track-like and 160 shower-like events detected over 2346 days of livetime are examined to search for coincidences with 54 IceCube high-energy track-like neutrino events, by means of a maximum likelihood method. No significant correlation is observed and upper limits on the one-flavour neutrino fluence from the direction of the IceCube candidates are derived. The non-observation of time and space correlation within the time window of 0.1 days with the two most energetic IceCube events constrains the spectral index of a possible point-like transient neutrino source, to be harder than −2.3 and −2.4 for each event, respectively. This paper introduces a software to calculate two kind of fuzzy histograms on fuzzy color spaces considering recent advances in cardinality and fuzzy quantification techniques. One of the histograms is based on the cardinality of the fuzzy set of pixels that match a certain color (modelled by means of a fuzzy set over a given color domain) and the other one is based on the compatibility between cardinality measures and linguistic labels, i.e., the accomplishment degree of linguistic statements about the number or percentage of colors in images. The software is implemented in Java and includes several graphical tools to calculate histograms for fuzzy colors in an efficient and easy way. Graphical representations of the histograms can also be displayed with this software.

There are challenges of using composite laminates in the marine engineering, i.e., composites are frequently suffering from the effects of impaction including wave impaction, ship or other objects hitting, missiles or bullets hitting and other especially conditions. It is significant to understand the impact behaviors of laminates, in this research, the impact responses of typical laminates are investigated numerically. The delamination responses among the plies and fibre and/or matrix damage responses within the plies are simulated to understand the impaction behaviours of laminates under impaction conditions. The impact damage of composite laminates in the form of intra- and/or inter-laminar cracking is modelled by using stress-based criteria for damage initiation, and fracture mechanics technique is used to capture its evolution. Interface cohesive elements are inserted between plies with appropriate mixed-mode damage laws to predict the delamination. A group of graphite fibre/epoxy laminates with impact energies of 5, 10, 15 and 20 J, respectively, are simulated with a full scale FE model and a simplified FE model respectively. Through comparing the simulation results with each other, we find out that the impact behaviors obtained in the simplified FE model is comparable to experiments with a short computing time, but the simplified model cannot represent the properties of laminate after impact. © (2015) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

The KM3NeT Collaboration runs a multi-site neutrino observatory in the Mediterranean Sea. Water Cherenkov particle detectors, deep in the sea and far off the coasts of France and Italy, are already taking data while incremental construction progresses. Data Acquisition Control software is operating off-shore detectors as well as testing and qualification stations for their components. The software, named Control Unit, is highly modular. It can undergo upgrades and reconfiguration with the acquisition running. Interplay with the central database of the Collaboration is obtained in a way that allows for data taking even if Internet links fail. In order to simplify the management of computing resources in the long term, and to cope with possible hardware failures of one or more computers, the KM3NeT Control Unit software features a custom dynamic resource provisioning and failover technology, which is especially important for ensuring continuity in case of rare transient events in multi-messenger astronomy. The software architecture relies on ubiquitous tools and broadly adopted technologies and has been successfully tested on several operating systems. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. Vibrotactile information can be used to elicit sensations and encourage particular user body movements. We designed a vibrotactile vest with physiological monitoring that interacts with a vibroacoustic urban environment, The Humming Wall. In this paper, we describe the first field trial with the system held over a 5-week period in an urban park. We depict the participants'experience, engagement and impressions while wearing thevibrotactile vest and interacting with the wall. We contribute withpositive responses to novel interactions between the responsiveenvironment and the vibrotactile vest, with a system designed tocalm, activate, guide and warn the participants. © 2015 ACM.
