Traditional construction safety planning practice relies on experienced safety staffs to plan fall protection activities based on his/her realization of the construction site conditions with 2D drawings and the associated safety regulations. Minimax regret sink location problem in dynamic tree networks with uniform capacity

This paper addresses the minimax regret sink location problem in dy- namic tree networks. In our model, a dynamic tree network consists of an undirected tree with positive edge lengths and uniform edge capacity, and the vertex supply which is a positive value is unknown but only the interval of supply is known. A particular realization of supply to each vertex is called a scenario. Under any scenario, the cost of a sink location x is defined as the minimum time to complete the evacuation to x for all supplies (evacuees), and the regret of x is defined as the cost of x minus the cost of the optimal sink location. Then, the problem is to find a sink location which minimizes the maximum regret for all possible scenarios. We present an O(n2 log2 n) time algorithm for the minimax regret sink location problem in dynamic tree networks with uniform capacity, where n is the number of vertices in the network. As a preliminary step for this result, we also address the minimum cost sink location problem in a dy- namic tree networks under a fixed scenario and present an O(n log n) time algorithm, which improves upon the existing time bound of O(n log2 n) by [14] if edges of a tree have uniform capacity. © 2014, Brown university. According to the need from the security and monitoring management, the paper proposes a new type of access control and positioning security management system based on RFID techniques. Combining with non-barrier access control subsystem and regional positioning subsystem, the system uses a small amount of passive and active RFID devices and monitoring management subsystem to make up the complex area of internal security management loopholes. In addition, an improved RF packet loss rate localization algorithm is presented to trace the exact location of the crews. The application result shows that the system can realize personnel identify, personnel fixed position and personnel track record etc, the system runs stability with a low fail rate and a quickly warned response.

Map/Reduce is a popular parallel processing framework for data intensive computing. For overlapping the Map task’s execution phase and the Reduce task’s intermediate data fetching and merging phase, existing Map/Reduce schedulers always pre-launch the Reduce task at the specific threshold where its map tasks have been launched, and this pattern incurs the occupation of the consuming resources of the reduce task during its idle time on waiting for fetching the intermediate data from map tasks. To address this issue, we propose an extension version of Hadoop map/reduce framework, called Predoop, in this paper. The basic idea of Predoop is to preempt the reduce task during its idle time and allocate the released resource to the map tasks on schedule. To achieve this goal, first, we introduce the preemptive mechanism for reduce tasks and map tasks respectively to enable Map/Reduce tasks to be preempted or resumed with correct status;second, we adopt the preempting-resuming model for the reduce task with the consideration of the progress of Reduce task data fetching & merging and the Map task execution so as to determine the timing of Reduce task preemption and resuming;third, we introduce the preemption-aware task scheduling strategy to allocate the released resources to the on-schedule Map tasks with the consideration of data locality. Experimental result demonstrates that Predoop outperforms Hadoop on various workload and the average job turnaround time can be reduced by maximum of 66.57%. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.

The Morgantina silver Treasure belonging to the collections of the Archaeological Museum of Aidone (Sicily) were involved in a 3D survey and diagnostics campaign for monitoring over time of the finds, in anticipation of their temporary transfer to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, for a period of four years. According to a multidisciplinary approach, it has been developed a scientific and methodological protocol based on non-invasive techniques to achieve a complete and integrated knowledge of the precious items, of their conservation state and increasing their valorisation. All acquired data, i.e. 3D models, UV fluorescence and X-Ray images and chemical information, will be made available, in a integrated way, within a web oriented platform, that will represent a in progress tool to deepen the existing archaeological knowledge and technologies of production and to obtain referenced information of the state of preservation, before and after moving of the finds from their exposure site. © 2015 Metrology for Archaeology, MetroArchaeo

Astrophysical sources of gravitational waves, such as binary neutron star and black hole mergers or core-collapse supernovae, can drive relativistic outows, giving rise to non-thermal high-energy emission. High-energy neutrinos are signatures of such outows. The detection of gravitational waves and high-energy neutrinos from common sources could help establish the connection between the dynamics of the progenitor and the properties of the outow. We searched for associated emission of gravitational waves and high-energy neutrinos from astrophysical transients with minimal assumptions using data from Advanced LIGO from its first observing run O1, and data from the Antares and IceCube neutrino observatories from the same time period. We focused on candidate events whose astrophysical origin could not be determined from a single messenger. We found no significant coincident candidate, which we used to constrain the rate density of astrophysical sources dependent on their gravitational wave and neutrino emission processes. Dynamic I/O-Aware Scheduling for Batch-Mode Applications on Chip Multiprocessor Systems of Cluster Platforms

Efficiency of batch processing is becoming increasingly important for many modern commercial service centers, e.g., clusters and cloud computing datacenters. However, periodical resource contentions have become the major performance obstacles for concurrently running applications on mainstream CMP servers. I/O contention is such a kind of obstacle, which may impede both the co-running performance of batch jobs and the system throughput seriously. In this paper, a dynamic I/O-aware scheduling algorithm is proposed to lower the impacts of I/O contention and to enhance the co-running performance in batch processing. We set up our environment on an 8-socket, 64-core server in Dawning Linux Cluster. Fifteen workloads ranging from 8 jobs to 256 jobs are evaluated. Our experimental results show significant improvements on the throughputs of the workloads, which range from 7% to 431%. Meanwhile, noticeable improvements on the slowdown of workloads and the average runtime for each job can be achieved. These results show that a well-tuned dynamic I/O-aware scheduler is beneficial for batch-mode services. It can also enhance the resource utilization via throughput improvement on modern service platforms.

Quercetin (3,5,7,3’,4’-pentahydroxyflavone, QE), one of the most widely distributed flavonoids in fruits and vegetables, has been reported to possess a wide variety of biological effects, including anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptosis, hepatoprotective, renoprotective and neuroprotective effects. In this study organic-inorganic junctions were fabricated by forming quercetin complex thin film using spin coating technique on n-Si and evaporating Au metal on the film. Optical properties of quercetin thin film were studied with the help of spectrophotometer. The current-voltage (I-V) characteristic of Au/quercetin/n-Si heterojunction diode was investigated at room temperature in dark. Some basic parameters of the diode such as ideality factor, rectification ratio, barrier height, series resistance and shunt resistance were calculated using dark current-voltage measurement. It was also seen that the device had good sensitivity to the light under 40-100 mW/cm2 illumination conditions.
