For many in the field of HCI, location and space are synonymous;yet, as we move from the mobile era to the ubiquitous era, computing becomes entangled with notions of space. This workshop critically examines the role of space in human-computer interfaces. The objective is to bring together diverse perspectives of space, drawing from architecture, philosophy, art, geography, design, dance, spatial-cognition, mathematics, computing, and still other domains, towards foregrounding space in theoretical discussions and explorations within the CHI community. Expected outcomes are the reporting of fresh insights into the impact and role of space in the interaction process.

A big data based data storage systems for rock burst experiment

State Key Laboratory for GeoMechanics and Deep Underground Engineering, Deep-Lab for short, has been committed to the study of rock burst. Deep-Lab accumulated a large number of rock-burst data. With the deepening of the research progress, massive-data dilemma, artificial-management-data dilemma and experimental-data-analysis dilemma have become three big problems of rock burst. These dilemmas restrict the development of rock burst research technologies. This article takes big data in rock burst experiment as research objects and innovatively introduces big data technology into rock burst. Digital features of rock-burst experimental data were extracted. On this basis, a big data based data storage systems for rock burst experiment, BDSS for short, was designed and built. Then an integrated rock burst experimental platform was constructed. Experiments show that, BDSS solves three dilemmas of rock burst, and realises the distributed storage system of data. BDSS also realises dynamic and efficient load of rock-burst big data, and its efficient query under complication conditions. Copyright © 2013 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

Improved model free learning control method for nonlinear system

Based on the basic theory and deficient points of Model-free Learning Adaptive Control (MFLAC) method, the Multi-innovation (MI) theory and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm were introduced into the improved measures. The simulation results show that the proposed controller has faster convergence rate and better tracking performance. The improved method, MI-MFLAC based on PSO, has the advantage of simplicity and effectiveness. The method is easy to implement for nonlinear system. Copyright © 2013 Binary Information Press.

Incremental knowledge compilation using the extension rule

Knowledge compilation by using the extension rule (KCER) has been recognized as a novel compilation approach, although this method can only deal with static knowledge bases. This paper proposes a novel incremental knowledge compilation method by using the extension rule so that it can tackle knowledge compilation problems in the dynamic environment. The method does not recompile the whole knowledge base, while it is to use the information of compiling original knowledge base to speed up the compiling process. The experimental results show that this method can deal with dynamic knowledge bases efficiently. © 2013 ACADEMY PUBLISHER.

Implementation of rate matching with low latency and little memory for LTE turbo code

In LTE (Long Term Evolution), the high utilization for physical resources is achieved by scheduling suitable number of time frequency resource elements for one user in one subframe. This is supported by the rate matching module that selecting arbitrary number of bits from the turbo coding bit streams. In this paper, a closed-form rate matching implementation method is proposed. It derives an integrated expression which is normalized for the 3 turbo coding streams. This expression sets up a mapping relationship between the bit streams input to and the bit sequence output from rate matching module. Moreover, the expression can be applied to rate de-matching processing in the receiver end. Compared with the existing method, the rate matching method that we proposed generates low latency and requires small memory. © 2013 Binary Information Press.

This special issue of the Journal of Networks includes extended versions of extended versions of selected best papers accepted and presented at the 8th International Joint Conference on e-Business and Telecommunications (ICETE 2011). Eight papers were selected based on their excellent review scores. Their authors were invited to submit extended versions, which have undergone a second review process to guarantee that all the papers included in this Special Issue have been rigorously peer-reviewed. The accepted papers cover areas like empirical evaluations, simulation modeling and theoretical studies addressing a variety of topics related to security in telecommunications, wireless networking, and *** first paper “Simplified Scheduling for Underwater Acoustic Networks” is authored by W. Van Kleunen, N. Meratnia and P. J. M. Havinga. It proposes an interesting solution to the scheduling and routing issues in underwater acoustic networks, giving a simplified set of constrains. These constrains are applied to three new scheduling algorithms: centralized for maximum throughput, distributed for low computational costs and centralized for low-latency end-to-end communications. The evaluation by simulation explores extensively the benefits obtained when the new set of constrains is applied to the proposed *** second paper, entitled “Power Management Mechanism Exploiting Network and Video Information over Wireless Links” authored by C. Bouras, S. Charalambides, K. Stamos, S. Stroumpis and G. Zaoudis, describes some cross-layer mechanisms to manage power consumption in wireless communications. The authors focus their analysis on video transmissions. The scenarios proposed are simulated using ns-2 simulator, obtaining relevant results referred to the video quality and the associated power *** the third paper, “QoS-Aware Multipath Communications over MANETs”, by M. Outline: The 4th international workshop on Culturally Aware Tutoring Systems (CATS2013) is a follow-up to the three previously successful CATS workshop editions, organized in conjunction with ITS2008, AIED2009, and ITS2010. It discusses the place of culture in AIED research. Considering culture in this field is important because it is known to have a strong impact on many cognitive and affective processes including those related to learning. Furthermore, people with different cultural backgrounds develop alternative interpretations and strategies and do not similarly appraise their environment, which naturally reflects in their interactions with AIED systems. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

In this paper we describe an approach for defining customized color descriptors for image retrieval. In particular, a customized fuzzy dominant color descriptor is proposed on the basis of a finite collection of fuzzy colors designed specifically for a certain user. Fuzzy colors modeling the semantics of a color name are defined as fuzzy subsets of colors on an ordinary color space, filling the semantic gap between the color representation in computers and the subjective human perception. The design of fuzzy colors is based on a collection of color names and corresponding crisp representatives provided by the user. The descriptor is defined as a fuzzy set over the customized fuzzy colors (i.e. a level-2 fuzzy set), taking into account the imprecise concept that is modelled, in which membership degrees represent the dominance of each color. The dominance of each fuzzy color is calculated on the basis of a fuzzy quantifier representing the notion of dominance, and a fuzzy histogram representing as a fuzzy quantity the percentage of pixels that match each fuzzy color. The obtained descriptor can be employed in a large amount of applications. We illustrate the usefulness of the descriptor by a particular application in image retrieval. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Changes in human capital management, new requirements regarding knowledge and skills of employees compel higher education institutions to redefine their learning programmes. This requires evaluation of the didactic process realization, which should be oriented on competences. In the article authors presents an approach to competence modeling. New tools and collaboration mechanisms are proposed, which allow defining the structure of competence, analyzing the level of competence development, and assessing the competence process realization in relation "expected benefit-required expense". © IFAC.
