The goal of Partitioned Global Address Space (PGAS) languages is to improve programmer productivity in large scale parallel machines. However, PGAS programs may have many fine-grained shared accesses that lead to performance degradation. Manual code transformations or compiler optimizations are required to improve the performance of programs with fine-grained accesses. The downside of manual code transformations is the increased program complexity that hinders programmer productivity. On the other hand, most compiler optimizations of fine-grain accesses require knowledge of physical data mapping and the use of parallel loop constructs. This paper presents an optimization for the Unified Parallel C language that combines compile time (static) and runtime (dynamic) coalescing of shared data, without the knowledge of physical data mapping. Larger messages increase the network efficiency and static coalescing decreases the overhead of library calls. The performance evaluation uses two microbenchmarks and three benchmarks to obtain scaling and absolute performance numbers on up to 32768 cores of a Power 775 machine. Our results show that the compiler transformation results in speedups from 1.15X up to 21X compared with the baseline versions and that they achieve up to 63% the performance of the MPI versions. © 2013 ACM.

Overview We present a functional implementation of an unmanned aerial vehicle complete with image acquisition payloads for the documentation and virtual reconstruction of cultural heritage sites. We discuss technological advances in unmanned aerial vehicles, as well as contemporary practices in implementation, which have evolved in the direction of reducing costs, enabling new functionalities, and emerging applications in cultural heritage fieldwork. These advances are the basis for the design and execution of our unmanned aircraft, which we develop to collect unique and comprehensive datasets in challenging acquisition scenarios at active cultural heritage sites. Our platform is able to perform visual imaging, using a variety of acquisition triggers and mechanisms to enable high-resolution in-plane site photogrammetry, oblique aerial examinations of large sites, and sequence acquisitions for use in structure from motion based volumetric reconstructions of specific areas of interest. This data is in turn suitable for exploration with or without volumetric post processing techniques using visual analysis techniques using interactive high resolution tiled display inspection environments.

The popularisation of Networked Virtual Environment (NVE) applications in several context, including social interaction and e-Health fields, makes them an interesting subject of study. The proper estimation of their network requirements are key to ensure a good user experience, an important factor that determines the acceptance and success of the applications. The studies focused on NVE with an important social component are relatively scarce. This paper presents the design, implementation and validation of a simulation tool to assist in the study of the requirements of a NVE application, Open Wonderland. This tool will facilitate the study of several parameters that define the user experience. The study describes the overall structure, development framework and models that define the traffic generation patterns and validates the simulation results by comparing its traces with real traffic from previous studies.

Several works in the literature have recently addressed the study of different Networked Virtual Environments (NVE) due to their increasing popularity and widespread use in fields ranging from entertainment to e-Health. Open Wonderland is one of these NVEs which has been the subject of several studies mainly focused on the client side. This paper aims to cover the server-side performance issues to provide complementary results that can be useful for properly sizing Open Wonderland systems according to the number of expected users. An experimental testbed is used, which provides real data that shows that CPU and outgoing bandwidth are the most critical parameters when the number of clients increase.

Neuromorphic engineers aim to mimic the precise and efficient mechanisms of the nervous system to process information using spikes from sensors to actuators. There are many available works that sense and process information in a spike-based way. But there are still several gaps in the actuation and motor control field in a spike-based way. Spike-based Proportional-Integrative-Derivative controllers (PID) are present in the literature. On the other hand, neuro-inspired control models as VITE (Vector Integration To End point) and FLETE (Factorization of muscle Length and muscle Tension) are also present in the literature. This paper presents another step toward the spike implementation of those neuro-inspired models. We present a spike-based ramp multiplier. VITE algorithm generates the way to achieve a final position targeted by a mobile robotic arm. The block presented is used as a gate for the way involved and it also puts the incoming movement on speed with a variable slope profile. Only spikes for information representation were used and the process is in real time. The software simulation based on Simulink and Xilinx System Generator shows the accurate adjust to the traditional processing for short time periods and the hardware tests confirm and extend the previous simulated results for any time. We have implemented the spikes generator, the ramp multiplier and the low pass filter into the Virtex-5 FPGA and connected this with an USB-AER (Address Event Representation) board to monitor the spikes.

Population Dynamics P systems (PDP systems, in short) provide a new formal bio-inspired modeling framework, which has been successfully used by ecologists. These models are validated using software tools against actual measurements. The goal is to use P systems simulations to adopt a priori management strategies for real ecosystems. Software for PDP systems is still in an early stage. The simulation of PDP systems is both computationally and data intensive for large models. Therefore, the development of efficient simulators is needed for this field. In this paper, we introduce a novel simulator for PDP systems accelerated by the use of the computational power of GPUs. We discuss the implementation of each part of the simulator, and show how to achieve up to a 7x speedup on a NVIDA Tesla C1060 compared to an optimized multicore version on a Intel 4-core i5 Xeon for large systems. Other results and testing methodologies are also included. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

in shared-memory Chip Multiprocessor (CMP), shared data between different cores must be exchanged through the last-level-shared-cache and cache coherence must be maintained at the same time. As the number of cores increase, the cache coherence wall has become more and more serious. As for the multimedia applications full of streaming-like data, existing multicore cache coherence protocols show lower performance and cannot meet the timeliness. In the paper, considering the poor temporal locality and high real-time characteristics of the multimedia data, we propose the distributed light-weight active-push buffer (DWALP-buffer) architecture to alleviate the cache coherence latency on streaming-like data in CMP. The architecture introduces a dedicated shared-data exchange channel between adjacent cores. The channel bridges the internal register files and reduces the shared-data communication latency. Supported by the control protocol, the architecture can adaptively balance the rate mismatch in producer-consumer pipeline model. We build a quad-core CMP simulation platform with the DWLAP-buffers. Our experiment indicates that comparing with the last-shared-level-cache method the architecture can improve the average performance by 13% and alleviate the snooping operations caused from maintaining cache coherence by 26%. © 2012 IEEE.

This paper proposes a methodology using a fast variable selection as a modified version of the Forward-Backward algorithm. This methodology is adapted to the specificities of the data used: very small number of samples and high number of variables. Such data is generated using underlying dependencies and seasonality assumptions, from Meme phrases volume data. By the use of a resampling technique along with the proposed variable selection scheme, significant results are obtained, and the test Normalized Mean Square Error performances are improved. The results indicate that with the assumptions made on the data structure, variable selection is desirable. Also, the obtained information on the selected variables seem to cluster the time series in two very different classes: a set of approximately 600 series, which yield good NMSE, and seem to require very similar sets of variables for the prediction;and another set of 300 - 400 series, for which only the previous series value is of interest for the prediction. This first analysis clearly illustrates the future need to perform a more thorough analysis of the selected variables for each of the batch of series. Also, taking a close look at the possible dependences between the series inside a batch should give information as to why and how they are similar and have found themselves to be grouped under the same batch.

Competition for shared memory resources on multiprocessors is the most dominant cause for slowing down applications and makes their performance varies unpredictably. It exacerbates the need for Quality of Service (QoS) on such systems. In this paper, we propose a fair-progress process scheduling (FPS) policy to improve system fairness. Its strategy is to force the equally-weighted applications to have the same amount of slowdown when they run concurrently. The basic approach is to monitor the progress of all applications at runtime. When we find an application suffered more slowdown and accumulated less effective work than others, we allocate more CPU time to give it a better parity. Our policy also allows different weights to different threads, and provides an effective and robust tuner that allows the OS to freely make tradeoffs between system fairness and higher throughput. Evaluation results show that FPS can significantly improve system fairness by an average of 53.5% and 65.0% on a 4-core processor with a private cache and a 4-core processor with a shared cache, respectively. The penalty is about 1.1% and 1.6% of the system throughput. For memory-intensive workloads, FPS also improves system fairness by an average of 45.2% and 21.1% on 4-core and 8-core system respectively at the expense of a throughput loss of about 2%. © 2012 ACM.

In this paper, an actual system based on wavelet transform and artificial neural networks was established to diagnose different types of fault in a gearbox. As a key step, biorthogonal wavelet was used to denoise in feature extraction of signals because of its properties of compact support, high vanishing moment and symmetry. Consequently, a multi-layer perceptron network were designed to diagnose the fault status with feature vectors as inputs. In order to improve the network learning speed and stability, Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm was used to train the network. The present classification accuracy indicates the effectiveness of gearbox failure diagnosis. © (2012) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.
