In this paper, a Fuzzy Dominant Texture Descriptor is proposed for semantically describing an image. This fuzzy descriptor is defined over a set of fuzzy sets modelling the "coarseness" texture property. Concretely, fuzzy partitions on the domain of coarseness measures are proposed, where the number of linguistic labels and the parameters of the membership functions are calculated relating representative coarseness measures (our reference set) with the human perception of this texture property. Given a "texture fuzzy set", its dominance in an image is analyzed and the dominance degree is used to obtain the image texture descriptor. Fuzzy operators over these descriptors are proposed to define conditions in image retrieval queries. The proposed framework makes database systems able to answer queries using texture-based linguistic labels in natural language. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2010.

The analysis of the perceptual properties of texture plays a fundamental role in tasks like semantic description of images or content-based image retrieval using linguistic queries. In this paper, we propose to model these properties by means of fuzzy partitions defined on the domain of some representative measures. In particular, we have focused our study on the properties of coarseness, contrast and directionality, that play a fundamental role in the human perception of texture. In our approach, the number of fuzzy sets in the partitions, as well as the parameters of the membership functions, are calculated by taking into account the relationship between the computational values given by the measures and the human perception of the corresponding property. The performance of the proposed modelling has been analyzed by applying the obtained fuzzy partitions in several experiments. © 2015 IEEE.

Uncertainty handling is a major issue for the control of real-world systems. Traditional singleton type-1 Fuzzy Logic Controllers (FLCs) with crisp inputs and precise fuzzy sets cannot fully cope with the high levels of uncertainties present in real world environments (e.g. sensor noise, environmental impacts, etc.). While non-singleton type-1 fuzzy systems can provide an additional degree of freedom through non-singleton fuzzification of the inputs, it is unclear how this capability relates to singleton type-1 and specifically interval type-2 FLCs in terms of control performance (also because the application of non-singleton type-1 FLCs is quite rare in the literature). In recent years interval type-2 FLCs employing type-2 fuzzy sets with a Footprint of Uncertainty (FOU) have become increasingly popular. This FOU provides an additional degree of freedom that can enable type-2 FLCs to handle the uncertainties associated with the inputs and the outputs of the FLCs. One of the main criticisms of singleton type-2 FLCs is that they outperform (the usually singleton-) type-1 FLCs because they - respectively their type-2 fuzzy sets, employ extra parameters, thus making improved performance an obvious result. In order to address this criticism, we have implemented a non-singleton type-1 FLC which allows a more direct comparison between the non-singleton type-1 FLC and singleton interval type-2 FLC as the number of parameters for both controllers is very similar. The paper details the implementation details of the FLCs for the application of a nonlinear servo system and provides the experimental simulation results which were performed to study the effect of increasing levels of uncertainty (in the form of input noise) and the capability of the individual FLCs to cope with them. We conclude by providing our interpretation of the results and highlighting the essential differences in the uncertainty handling between the (non-) singleton type-1 and singleton interval type-2 FLC

A major trend in recent cluster communication systems is to circumvent the operating system during the actual data transfers. That, on the one hand, reduces latency since there is no user-kernel transition needed and, on the other hand, increases bandwidth by avoiding additional intermediate copies. The data transfer is handled completely by the networking hardware and its DMA engine. For example, the Virtual Interface processes can access networking hardware directly in a protected manner. One of its characteristics is that it requires that all memory used for communication be locked down into physical memory. The same requirement holds true for the Infiniband ensures reliable locking of regular, i.e. private, virtual memory without altering the kernel. In this paper we present an extended solution that can handle System V shared memory as well. © 2001 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.. All rights reserved.

This paper describes an experience that has been carried out by several professors in different subjects. Our experience is framed within the First Plan in Teaching of the university of seville. All involved subjects belong to the electronic technology area and from three computer science degrees. We propose to use, in a combined way, some learning techniques: cooperative learning as complement to traditional learning, role-playing technique and jigsaw technique. We have considered a base methodology but in each subject a variant of it has been accomplished. We have used several evaluation techniques, such as reciprocal evaluation, electronic portfolio and check lists. Applying our methodology helps us to detect learning problems before the term ends. Also, in tune with the framework of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), our methology gives a boost to develop transversal competences as important as work (or study) management, empathy and understanding of other members in a workgroup, conflict resolution, capacity to make decisions as well as coordinate and communicate with other members in a workgroup and also with the professor. © 2010 IEEE.

Epilepsy is a medical problem that tackles lots of patients. It limits the life activity of such patients due to the seizures that occur anytime and anywhere. Thus, creating a monitoring system that could make their life easier and allow them to perform daily life activities as safe as possible has been studied. This paper is a continuity for a project where a system monitors epileptic patients using a set of wearable sensors connected to several processing units, the main sensors are Electroencephalogram (EEG) for the electrical activity of the brain, electrocardiogram (ECG) for the electrical activity of the heart, and accelerometers to monitor the posture of the patient, features extracted from EEG and ECG signals are used for prediction/detection of seizures. Thus, the objective of this paper is to present a comparative study in order to choose the appropriate classification method for seizure prediction and detection. Five classification methods were studied: Decision Trees, Discriminant Analysis, Support Vector Machine (SVM), K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN), and Ensemble Learning. For each of the classification methods, the accuracy, the specificity, the sensitivity, the precision, the false detection rate and the Fmeasure were studied and compared. The results for seizure prediction system show that the highest accuracy, specificity and F-Measure, and lowest false detection rate were achieved with Bagged Trees Ensemble Learning, the highest sensitivity and precision were achieved with Quadratic Support Vector Machine. However, for seizure detection system, the highest accuracy and F-Measure were achieved with Linear Support Vector, the highest sensitivity and specificity were achieved with Fine Gaussian Support Vector Machine, and the highest precision and lowest false detection rate were achieved with Subspace Discriminant Ensemble Learning. © 2020 IEEE.

Outsourcing jobs to a public cloud is a cost-effective way to address the problem of satisfying the peak resource demand when the local cloud has insufficient resources. In this paper, we study on managing deadline-constrained bag-of-tasks jobs on hybrid clouds. We present a binary nonlinear programming (BNP) problem to model the hybrid cloud management where the utilization of physical machines (PMs) in the local cloud/cluster is maximized when the local resources are enough to satisfy the deadline constraints of jobs, while when not, the rent cost from the public cloud is minimized. To solve the BNP problem in polynomial time, we propose the heuristic algorithm whose main idea is assigning a task to a core of a used PM (in local cloud) or a rented virtual machine (VM) (in public cloud) such that the difference between the finish time of the task and its deadline is minimal in all of assignments. If none of unassigned tasks can be completed within its deadline, the algorithm adds an available PM with most capacity or rents a new VM with highest cost-performance ratio and assigns tasks to the new PM/VM as previous step. Extensive experimental results show that our heuristic algorithm saves 16.2%-76% cost and improves 47.3%-182.8% resource utilizations for finishing jobs within their respective deadlines with comparable overheads, compared with first fit decreasing algorithm. © 2016 Society for Modeling & Simulation International (SCS).

Growing on-chip wire delays will cause many future microarchitecture to be distributed. The centralized control and data transmission of the conventional stream processor need to be improved, the hardware resources within a single stream processor become tiles on one or more switched micronetworks. In this paper, we introduce the architecture of the tiled stream processor which aims to adapt to the increasing wire resistance. The tiled stream processor consists of tile arrays, the distributed control and data network which connect tiles. The tile arrays include the five type of reused tiles, the control packet transferred in the control network traverse the tile in a cycle. The architecture of the tiled stream processor supports explicit data management in the hardware way and include two level register hierarchy which are controlled by the software to capture the data locality. The tiled stream processor use the stream programming model which are StreamC/KernelC language, the kernel microcode executed in the tiled arrays are statically scheduled into instruction blocks and execute dynamically in an dataflow order. Finally, we discuss features that affect the kernel performance, with the one cycle routing delay the simulator can achieve an average of 10IPC in eight kernels. © 2008 IEEE.

Operating systems have historically been implemented as independent layers between hardware and applications. User programs communicate with the OS through a set of well defined system calls, and do not have direct access to the hardware. The OS, in turn, communicates with the underlying architecture via control registers. Except for these interfaces, the three layers are practically oblivious to each other. While this structure improves portability and transparency, it may not deliver optimal performance. This is especially true for High Performance Computing (HPC) systems, where modern parallel applications and multi-core architectures pose new challenges in terms of performance, power consumption, and system utilization. The hardware, the OS, and the applications can no longer remain isolated, and instead should cooperate to deliver high performance with minimal power consumption. In this paper we present our experience with the design and implementation of High Performance Linux (HPL), an operating system designed to optimize the performance of HPC applications running on a state-of-the-art compute cluster. We show how characterizing parallel applications through hardware and software performance counters drives the design of the OS and how including knowledge about the architecture improves performance and efficiency. We perform experiments on a dual-socket IBM POWER6 machine, showing performance improvements and stability (performance variation of 2.11% on average) for NAS, a widely used parallel benchmark suite. © 2010 IEEE.
