The fast evolutionary programming (FEP) introduced the Cauchy distribution into its mutation operator, thus the performances of EP were promoted significantly on a number of benchmark problems. However, the scaling parameter of the Cauchy mutation is invariable, which has become an obstacle for FEP to reach better performance. This paper proposes and analyzes a new stochastic method for controlling the variable scaling parameters of Cauchy mutation. This stochastic method collects information from a group of individuals randomly selected from the population. Empirical evidence validates our method to be very helpful in promoting the performance of FEP.

In this paper, we address the problem of lifetime maximization under coverage and connectivity requirements for heterogeneous wireless sensor networks where different targets need to be covered (sensed ) by different types of wireless sensors running at possibly different sampling rates as well as different initial energy reserve. The problem is particularly challenging since we need to consider both connectivity requirement and so-called target Q-coverage requirement, i.e., different targets may require different sensing quality in terms of the number of transducers, sampling rate, sensing data rate, etc. In this paper, we formulate a lifetime maximization problem, which is general and allows unprecedented diversity in coverage requirements, sampling rates, transmission energy consumption models, communication ranges, and target sensing ranges. Our approach is based on column generation, where a column corresponding to a feasible solution; our idea is to find a column with steepest ascent in lifetime, based on which we iteratively search for the maximum lifetime solution. Through extensive simulations, we systematically study the effect of sampling rates, transmission energy consumption models, communication ranges, and target sensing ranges on the lifetime.

When a concurrent shared-memory program written with a sequential consistency (SC) model is run on a machine implemented with a relaxed consistency (RC) model, it could cause SC violations that are very hard to debug. To avoid such violations, programmers need to provide explicit synchronizations or insert fence instructions. In this paper, we propose a scheme to detect and eliminate potential SC violations by combining Shasha/Snir's conflict graph and delay set theory with existing data race detection techniques. For each execution, we generate a race graph, which contains the improperly synchronized conflict accesses, called race accesses, and race cycles formed with those accesses. As a race cycle would probably lead to a non-sequential-consistent execution, we call it a potential violation of sequential consistency (PVSC) bug. We then compute the race delays of race cycles, and suggest programmers to insert fences into source code to eliminate PVSC bugs. We further convert a race graph into a PC race graph, and improves cycle detection and race delay computation to O(n 2 ), where n is the number of race access instructions. We evaluate our approach with the SPLASH-2 benchmarks, two large real-world applications (MySQL and Apache), and several multi-threaded Cilk programs. The results show that (1) the proposed approach could effec-tively detect PVSC bugs in real-world applications with good scalability; (2) it retains most of the performance of the concurrent program after inserting required fence instructions, with less than 6.3% performance loss; and (3) the additional cost of our approach over traditional race detection techniques is quite low, with 3.3% on average.

We describe a unique competition based on the novel concept of robotics and mechatronics products that included evaluation of the products' engineering function and interface design. Seventy-seven students of eleven teams from seven universities in the Kyushu area participated in the competition, whose subject was " Health care, life supporting and communication or other technical aids for the elderly or disabled." Many of the plans presented ideas that balanced function and design, showing the results of collaboration among students studying engineering and students studying product design. © 2009 SICE.

As microprocessors become more complex, early design space exploration plays an essential role in reducing the time to market and post-silicon surprises. The trend toward multi-/many- core processors will result in sophisticated large-scale architecture substrates (e.g. non-uniformly accessed caches interconnected by network-on-chip) that exhibit increasingly complex and heterogeneous behavior. While conventional analytical modeling techniques can be used to efficiently explore the characteristics (e.g. IPC and power) of monolithic architecture design, existing methods lack the ability to accurately and informatively forecast the complex behavior of large and distributed architecture substrates across the design space. This limitation will only be exacerbated with the rapidly increased integration scale (e.g. number of cores per chip). In this paper, we propose novel, multi-scale 2D predictive models which can efficiently reason the characteristics of large and sophisticated multi-core oriented architectures during the design space exploration stage without using detailed cycle-level simulations. Our proposed techniques employ 2D wavelet multiresolution analysis and neural network regression modeling. We extensively evaluate the efficiency of our predictive models in forecasting the complex and heterogeneous characteristics of large and distributed shared cache interconnected by a network on chip in multi-core designs using both multi-programmed and multithreaded workloads. Experimental results show that the models achieve high accuracy while maintaining low complexity and computation overhead. Through case studies, we demonstrate that the proposed techniques can be used to informatively explore and accurately evaluate global, cooperative multi-core resource allocation and thermal-aware designs that cannot be achieved using conventional design exploration methods.

A novel multi-objective optimization based particle swarm optimization algorithm is presented to solve the global optimization problem for based services selecting in Web services composition technology. This algorithm takes Web services selection as a multi-objective constrained optimization problem with constraints. It introduces multi-objective PSO intelligent theory to optimize multi parameters simultaneously, and produces a set of constraints to meet the Pareto optimal solution. The experiments show that the algorithm is a feasible and efficient method for Web services selection.

This paper proposes a modified particle swarm optimization algorithm for engineering optimization problems with constraints, in which the penalty function is employed to the traditional PSO algorithm, and at the same time adjusts the personal optimum and global optimum to make PSO being able to solve the non-linear programming problems, then the multi-objective problem can be converted into single objective problem. Moreover, the constraint term played its role in the process of generating particles, those pariticles which don't meet the constraint condition are eliminated. The actual engineering design optimization problem is tested and the results show that the multi-objective particle swarm optimization algorithm can be used to solve the multi-objective constrained optimization problem. Comparison with Genetic Algorithm confirms that the proposed algorithm can find better solutions, and converge quickly.

This paper describes and demonstrates a mathematical algorithm that can monitor the physical parameters of the motor solely by observing the stator electrical currents. This method uses measurements of transient stator currents to identify the parameters of an electromechanical model of the induction motor. These parameters are obtained from a relatively poor initial guess, which is constrained only to be within an order of magnitude of the physical parameters, by using a two-step strategy based upon nonlinear least-squares regression techniques. This makes the approach in this paper useful for diagnostic monitoring and energy scorekeeping. Experimental results are presented which demonstrate the effectiveness of this method on identifying the parameters of a 1 HP induction motor connected to a squirrel cage fan in an air-handling unit.

The grid links all resources in different structures widespread geographically into one logical system via internet, characterized with complexity of network structure, dynamism of network resources and autonomy of each LAN. The high-efficient management of grid resources and high-efficient scheduling of tasks are the important contents in today's net grid research. Slices technology is the present quite popular popular technology, the application domain is widespread. The grid technology and the slice technology fuse in together, may create the more reasonable task scheduling and the scheduling of resources. In this article we divide the tasks into some small tasks assigned with scheduling priorities for each level, and then slice all resources in network into some time slices assigned with resource priorities according to trust mechanism. It promotes the effectiveness and high-efficiency by arranging task scheduling and resource scheduling in priority.

Accuracy assessment for map comparison is commonly found in urban planning research, especially for detecting error in remotely sensed imagery data. It is to compare two sources of spatial information. In analyzing such information quantitatively, the two datasets are summarized in a confusion matrix, which is represented in a form of percentage of predicted value against its actual data (ground truth). The common acceptable percentage is eighty percent and above. In this paper, we present a new way of accuracy assessment by introducing an additional value called residual error (or predicted error). The residual error is the percentage of error exists when two sources of major errors called mis-classification and mis-location are integrated. Such residual error is incorporated into the assessment so that the results are more accurate and comprehensive. As a case study, we calculate the residual errors of five independent image classifications from six different datasets. Therefore, the accuracy assessment is performed with more details that include not only the confusion matrix, but also the residual errors. In this way, the results of the change detection process can help in doing further analysis for urban growth and land development, particularly for town area.
