Any simulation-based evaluation of an interconnection network proposal requires a good characterization of the workload. Synthetic traffic patterns based on independent traffic sources are commonly used to measure performance in terms of average latency and peak throughput. As they do not capture the level of self-throttling that occurs in most parallel applications, they can produce inaccurate throughput estimates at high loads. Thus, workloads that resemble the varying levels of synchronization of actual applications are needed to study the performance of interconnection networks. One approach is to use simple, burst-synchronized synthetic workloads that emulate the self-throttling of many parallel applications. To validate this approach, we compare the gains achieved by a restrictive injection mechanism under this workload with those obtained using traces from the NAS Parallel Benchmarks. This study confirms that the burst-synchronized traffic model provides reasonable performance estimates, which could be improved by taking into account dependency chains between messages.

In this paper, we present a large-scale interactive book browsing installation for children's libraries called StorySurfer. The StorySurfer prototype is developed within the Interactive Children's Library project, which includes interests from within design, research, industry, and libraries. The objective of the project is to give room for and encourage the physical activities of children, while pursuing to connect these with the basic digital and analogue services of the library e.g. borrowing and handing in books, searching for information, and providing access to a rich variety of media. Public spaces are changing from being ungoverned places for interaction to be more formalized, controlled, less interactive, and designed places aimed at fulfilling a purpose. Simultaneously, new personal mobile technology aims at providing private individual spaces in the public domain. In this paper we explore the implications of interacting in public space and how technology can be rethought to not only act as personal devices, but be the tool to reclaim the right and possibility to interact in public spaces. We introduce information exchange, social support and regulation as three central aspects for reclaiming public space. The PhotoSwapper application is presented as an example of a system designed to integrate pervasive technology in a public setting. The system is strongly inspired by the activities at a traditional market place. Based on the design of the application we discuss four design challenges when designing for public interaction. This article presents a remote automatic meter reading (AMR) system as a result of the Mirakonta project, in which are involved several university investigation groups and a private company. The AMR system is composed by reader devices and a group of elements that allow a wireless connection to a central server. The system is based on taking a picture of the fluid meter digit display, preprocessing and transmitting it to a remote element using a radio frequency ad-hoc protocol. The reader device is implemented on a FPGA based system and the firmware can be updated remotely (remote reconfiguration). In addition, the different parameters of the reader can be configured remotely. To meet the low power requirements a sleep and wake-up technique is applied. All the requirements of the system have been covered, offering a hardware-software product that covers most needs of the end users.

A study on the comprehensive evaluation of the social, environmental and economic benefits of the land fund expenditure in Shenzhen was made based on fuzzy mathematics. To be more objective and more effective, the benefit evaluation procedure was improved in the following aspects. Firstly, the index system of comprehensive evaluation was established according to the main usage of the land fund in Shenzhen over the years. Secondly, with the assumption that the direct benefits and indirect benefits are different in proportion, the paper confirmed the weights of the main indexes according to the actual expenditure situation of the land fund. Finally, this paper regarded the relevant standard of developed country and urban construction in our country as the standard to confirm the grades of the indexes. The calculation result showed that there are 13 indexes regarded as excellent among the 24 indexes selected; the proportion changes of direct and indirect benefits have little influence on the total evaluation result; weights and evaluation grades of the social benefit were the highest in the 3 types of benefits, the economic benefit was the lowest; the weights and evaluation grades of municipal engineering were the highest, and accessory facility was the lowest.

We propose a mitigation technique of high-level multiple access interference(MAI) for multimedia optical Code- Division Multiple-Access(CDMA) systems using the optical power selector. The proposed system can eliminate high-intensity MAI at the receiver for the low-priority users. Moreover, the proposed scheme can reduce by half the required number of code sequences compared to the conventional scheme. As a result, the proposed scheme can obtain higher code spreading gain due to the increase of number of weights at the same code-length. We analyze performances of the proposed scheme and show that both the high-priority users and low-priority users achieve lower bit error rates in comparison to the conventional scheme.

The recent changes in the world and engineering present both challenges and opportunities to the engineering education. Engineering education is changing to meet these challenges. More and more engineering programs strive to include entrepreneurship and innovation, traditionally American values, in the engineering curriculum. In this paper, we present our view on teaching entrepreneurship to future engineers and describe our experience in introducing entrepreneurship in engineering education through an NSF-sponsored pilot program based on collaboration between Stony Brook university and three other major higher education institutions on Long Island.

Fast time-domain edge-diffraction calculations for interactive acoustic simulations

The inclusion of edge diffraction has long been recognized as an improvement to geometrical-acoustics (GA)modeling techniques, particularly for acoustic simulations of complex environments that are represented as collections of finite-sized planar surfaces. One particular benefit of combining edge diffraction with GA components is that the resulting total sound field is continuous when an acoustic source or receiver crosses a specular-zone or shadow-zone boundary, despite the discontinuity experienced by the associated GA *** interactive acoustic simulations which include only GA components, such discontinuities may be heard as clicks or other undesirable audible artifacts, and thus diffraction calculations are important for high perceptual quality as well as physical realism. While exact diffraction calculations are difficult to compute at interactive rates, approximate calculations are possible and sufficient for situations in which the ultimate goal is a perceptually plausible simulation rather than a numerically exact one. In this paper, we describe an edge-subdivision strategy that allows for fast time-domain edge-diffraction calculations with relatively low error when compared with results from a more numerically accurate solution. The tradeoff between computation time and accuracy can be controlled with a number of parameters, allowing the user to choose the speed that is necessary and the error that is tolerable for a specific modeling scenario.

In this paper we present a study on the requirements for the design and implementation of simulation packages for Grid systems. Grids are emerging as new distributed computing systems whose main objective is to manage and allocate geographically distributed computing resources to applications and users in an efficient and transparent manner. Grid systems are at present very difficult and complex to use for experimental studies of large-scale distributed applications. Although the field of simulation of distributed computing systems is mature, recent developments in large-scale distributed systems are raising needs not present in the simulation of the traditional distributed systems. Motivated by this, we present in this work a set of basic requirements that any simulation package for Grid computing should offer. This set of functionalities is obtained after a careful review of most important existing Grid simulation packages and includes new requirements not considered in such simulation packages. Based on the identified set of requirements, a Grid simulator is developed and exemplified for the Grid scheduling problem.
