A novel model for data-driven smart sustainable cities of the future: the institutional transformations required for balancing and advancing the three goals of sustainability

In recent years, it has become increasingly feasible to achieve important improvements of sustainability by integrating sustainable urbanism with smart urbanism thanks to the proven role and synergic potential of data-driven technologies. Indeed, the processes and practices of both of these approaches to urban planning and development are becoming highly responsive to a form of data-driven urbanism, giving rise to a new phenomenon known as "data-driven smart sustainable urbanism." Underlying this emerging approach is the idea of combining and integrating the strengths of sustainable cities and smart cities and harnessing the synergies of their strategies and solutions in ways that enable sustainable cities to optimize, enhance, and maintain their performance on the basis of the innovative data-driven technologies offered by smart cities. These strengths and synergies can be clearly demonstrated by combining the advantages of sustainable urbanism and smart urbanism. To enable such combination, major institutional transformations are required in terms of enhanced and new practices and competences. Based on case study research, this paper identifies, distills, and enumerates the key benefits, potentials, and opportunities of sustainable cities and smart cities with respect to the three dimensions of sustainability, as well as the key institutional transformations needed to support the balancing of these dimensions and to enable the introduction of data-driven technology and the adoption of applied data-driven solutions in city operational management and development planning. This paper is an integral part of a futures study that aims to analyze, investigate, and develop a novel model for data-driven smart sustainable cities of the future. I argue that the emerging data-driven technologies for sustainability as innovative niches are reconfiguring the socio-technical landscape of institutions, as well as providing insights to policymakers into pathways for strengthening

Integrating electrophysiological signals in larger systems is getting wider due to the fact that such modalities facilitate the daily tasks of users. However, the high cost of monitoring systems (e.g., oscilloscopes) limits the testing and analysis of the acquired signal from such noisy systems (i. e., electrophysiological devices). The proposed system is a part of a larger proj ect that deals with the identification of sign language movements through the use of Muscle-computer Interfaces. On one hand, the user is able to display the signal acquired by the electrodes on an LCD screen. On the other hand, the system helps a mute patient to issue a special message to his surrounding environment that does not know the sign language to ask for help. The second feature is not unique, as it can be replaced by any other application based on the user's needs. The system was tested on several persons, and the results are promising. © 2022 IEEE.

Anomaly localization plays a critical role if a disaster occurs in a high-density crowd to efficiently rescue the crowd from the right location. This paper enriches anomaly localization by introducing new localization features, in addition to the ‘only’ localization feature of source/start point detection existing literature offers. New features introduced include crowd density estimation in localized regions and direction/angle of a localized region. A motion shape image (MSI) based approach is introduced for localization and features detection and experimentation is performed on benchmark and our proposed high-density crowd datasets. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Diffuse horizontal irradiance (DHI) forecasts are critical for adopting solar photovoltaic technology. Yet, they can lack reliability given the limited and uncertain meteorological data available for desert areas. This research develops a new sine cosine dipper throated optimization (SCDTO) technique, targeting DHI prediction even given such data constraints. SCDTO uniquely hybridizes sine cosine metaheuristics, adept at exploration, with dipper throat optimization, providing focused exploitation. This hybridization aims to create a robust ensemble model capable of delivering reliable DHI predictions despite climatic uncertainty. The ensemble model, employing various input combinations, was rigorously evaluated across multiple meteorological stations. The SCDTO algorithm exhibited remarkable performance improvements, yielding substantial reductions exceeding 93% in root mean squared error and 98% in mean absolute error at key stations in Morocco, including Tan-Tan, Zagora, Erfoud, and Oujda. Comparative analyses against established optimization algorithms consistently underscored the superior predictive capabilities of SCDTO. Visualizations, including box plots and histograms, demonstrated SCDTO’s efficacy in minimizing prediction errors, particularly for Tan-Tan, Zagora, and Erfoud stations. Also, statistical validation through one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) further affirmed the significance of the proposed SCDTO method. Therefore, this hybrid metaheuristic optimization enables more accurate DHI predictions from limited meteorological data. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2024.

As a typical ICT-based transportation infrastructure in smart cities, ride-sharing platforms significantly enhance the efficiency of urban public transportation. However, they face severe cybersecurity risks. Cities like Moscow have experienced incidents where hackers infiltrated ride-sharing platforms to maliciously dispatch vehicles, leading to extensive traffic congestion. Existing literature has paid much attention to road network vulnerability against natural disasters. Yet, less focus has been put on disturbances due to such cyber attacks. In this study, we assess the vulnerability of the downtown road network in Nanjing during the morning peak hours when subjected to ride-hailing malicious dispatch attacks. We begin by adopting the perspective of attackers, leveraging relevant theories from graph theory to devise an optimized malicious vehicle dispatch scheme under the real-time road conditions. Subsequently, we conduct simulated attacks against the target network in five major commuting directions. Results show that this attack can significantly decrease the road traffic capacity in some critical directions with just a dispatch of tens of vehicles. Additionally, there is a noticeable disparity in vulnerability across different directions. In response, we further identify the primary factors contributing to these variations, which aims to enhance the resilience of urban road network in the information age. © 2023, The Authors. At high-density crowd gatherings, people naturally escape from the region where any unexpected event happens. Escape in high-density crowds appears as a divergence pattern in the scene and timely detecting divergence patterns can save many human lives. In this paper, we propose to physically capture crowd normal and divergence motion patterns (or motion shapes) in form of images and train a shallow convolution neural network (CNN) on motion shape images for divergence behavior detection. Crowd motion pattern shape is obtained by extracting ridges of Lagrangian Coherent Structure (LCS) from the Finite-Time Lyapunov Exponent (FTLE) field and convert ridges into the grey-scale image. We also propose a divergence localization algorithm to pinpoint anomaly location(s). Experimentation is carried out on synthetic crowd datasets simulating normal and divergence behaviors at the high-density crowd. Comparison with state-of-the-art methods shows our method can obtain better accuracy for both divergence behavior detection and localization problems. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Nowadays, there is a noticeable increase in the development and use of the Internet of Things(loT). With this rapid increase, IoT devices may face several challenges when used in the real world through applications. Using 5G with large numbers of Internet-connected devices of IoT puts many devices at risk and requires risk management. The growing of IoT leads to the growth of cyber-attackers and allow them to expose the vulnerabilities. This paper will present the risk management of 5G-enabled IoT technology and the use of machine learning to mitigate the risk and reduce the attacks on these technologies, and finding solutions through previous researches. This research aims to identify and eliminate potential risks in the IoT based 5G by machine learning. The paper also aims to present a solution to the security problems and risks faced when integrating the fifth-generation network and the Internet of Things. With 5G-enabled IoT, the risk management helps organizations use emerging technologies effectively while mitigating potential underlying risks such as security breaches, and data loss. Authentication,encryption, access control, and communication security are essential for making security. Machine learning algorithms have the potential to remove many obstacles to implementing the security of the Internet of Things, paving the door for the use of sophisticated technology like 5G. With new 5G networks, it is expected that the current IoT will be significantly expanded, which will improve cellular operations and the security of IoT, as well as push the future of the Internet to its edges. Guided wave tomography allows the investigation of extended areas with a limited number of measurements, typically using transducer arrays. Most imaging methods rely heavily on the material properties such as dispersion curves, that in the case of fouling deposition are not always known. In the case of complex shaped structures, geometrical anisotropy can bring additional complexity. Here we present an unsupervised machine learning approach based on the Gaussian process to detect and characterize the fouling in a pipe bend that relies only on the difference between clean/healthy and fouled/damaged measured signals.

In magnetic resonant coupling (MRC) based wireless power transfer (WPT) systems, receiver (RX) feedback communication is promising to enhance the capability and efficiency of the system. Although some studies have explored in-band implementations with low overhead costs, it has not been comprehensively investigated. In this paper, we propose Relip, a Reliable layer-level in-band parallel feedback communication mechanism for MIMO MRC-WPT systems, which addresses the impact of RX-RX couplings (i.e., non-negligible interference from strong couplings and positive effects of relay phenomenon), and provides a theoretical analysis of communication reliability. Technically, we first devise an On-Off based two-phase modulation mechanism to achieve RX identification and dependency detection under relay phenomenon. Then, we utilize observed channel decomposability to collect group-level power transfer channel conditions for eliminating the interference caused by strong RX-RX couplings. Furthermore, we perform RX selection to optimize the trade-off between communication reliability and time overhead. We design and implement the Relip prototype and conduct extensive experiments. The results validate the effectiveness of our mechanism, i.e., Relip can provide ≥99% average decoding accuracy for concurrent feedback communication of 14 devices, achieving an 18.31% improvement compared to the state-of-the-art solution. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

The Electroencephalography discipline studies a type of signals called Electroencephalograms (EEGs), which represent the electrical activity of different parts of the brain. EEGs are composed of a massive number of features that could be used to create an intelligent recognition system. Nevertheless, the high number of available features difficult the correct classification of the signals as most of them do not contain relevant information. The use of Feature Selection (FS) techniques allows the reduction of the number of features by extracting a reduced but powerful feature subset. Afterwards, the problem can be addressed by using both the reduced features along with classification methods. In this sense, this work proposes a comparison of five supervised classifiers to solve an Electroencephalography problem in the context of Motor Imagery-based BCI tasks. The predictive models are evaluated in terms of classification rate and performance (execution time and energy consumption), with the idea of determining which alternative offers the best trade-off among all the objectives. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
