With neural architecture search methods gaining ground on manually designed deep neural networks -even more rapidly as model sophistication escalates-, the research trend shifts towards arranging different and often increasingly complex neural architecture search spaces. In this conjuncture, delineating algorithms which can efficiently explore these search spaces can result in a significant improvement over currently used methods, which, in general, randomly select the structural variation operator, hoping for a performance gain. In this paper, we investigate the effect of different variation operators in a complex domain, that of multi-network heterogeneous neural models. These models have an extensive and complex search space of structures as they require multiple sub-networks within the general model in order to answer to different output types. From that investigation, we extract a set of general guidelines, whose application is not limited to that particular type of model, and are useful to determine the direction in which an architecture optimization method could find the largest improvement. The higher education (HE) sector benefits every nation’s economy and society at large. However, their contributions are challenged by advanced technologies like generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive assessment of GenAI tools towards assessment and pedagogic practice and, subsequently, discuss the potential impacts. This study experimented using three assessment instruments from data science, data analytics, and construction management disciplines. Our findings are two-fold: first, the findings revealed that GenAI tools exhibit subject knowledge, problem-solving, analytical, critical thinking, and presentation skills and thus can limit learning when used unethically. Secondly, the design of the assessment of certain disciplines revealed the limitations of the GenAI tools. Energy performance certificate (EPC) and thermal infrared (TIR) images both play a key role in the energy performance mapping of the urban building stock. In this paper, we developed parametric building archetypes using an EPC database and conducted temperature clustering on TIR images acquired through drones and satellite datasets. We evaluated 1725 EPCs of existing building stock in Cambridge, UK to generate energy consumption profiles. Drone-based TIR images of individual buildings in two Cambridge university colleges were processed using a machine learning pipeline for thermal anomaly detection and investigated the influence of two specific factors that affect the reliability of TIR for energy management applications: ground sample distance (GSD) and angle of view (AOV). The EPC-level results suggest that the construction year of the buildings influences their energy consumption. For example, modern buildings were over 30% more energy-efficient than older ones. Parallelly, older buildings were found to show almost double the energy savings potential through retrofitting than newly constructed buildings. TIR imaging results showed that thermal anomalies can only be properly identified in images with a GSD of 1m/pixel or less. A GSD of 1-6m/pixel can detect hot areas of building surfaces. We found that a GSD > 6m/pixel cannot characterise individual buildings but does help identify urban heat island effects. Additional sensitivity analysis showed that building thermal anomaly detection is more sensitive to AOV than to GSD. Our study informs newer approaches to building energy diagnostics using thermography and supports decision-making for retrofitting at a large scale. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. Detecting traffic signs effectively under low-light conditions remains a significant challenge. To address this issue, we propose YOLO-LLTS, an end-to-end real-time traffic sign detection algorithm specifically designed for low-light environments. Firstly, we introduce the High-Resolution Feature Map for Small Object Detection (HRFM-TOD) module to address indistinct small-object features in low-light scenarios. By leveraging high-resolution feature maps, HRFM-TOD effectively mitigates the feature dilution problem encountered in conventional PANet frameworks, thereby enhancing both detection accuracy and inference speed. Secondly, we develop the Multi-branch Feature Interaction Attention (MFIA) module, which facilitates deep feature interaction across multiple receptive fields in both channel and spatial dimensions, significantly improving the model’s information extraction capabilities. Finally, we propose the Prior-Guided Enhancement Module (PGFE) to tackle common image quality challenges in low-light environments, such as noise, low contrast, and blurriness. This module employs prior knowledge to enrich image details and enhance visibility, substantially boosting detection performance. To support this research, we construct a novel dataset, the Chinese Nighttime Traffic Sign Sample Set (CNTSSS), covering diverse nighttime scenarios, including urban, highway, and rural environments under varying weather conditions. Experimental evaluations demonstrate that YOLO-LLTS achieves state-of-the-art performance, outperforming the previous best methods by 2.7% mAP50 and 1.6% mAP50:95 on TT100K-night, 1.3% mAP50 and 1.9% mAP50:95 on CNTSSS, and achieving superior results on the CCTSDB2021 dataset. The proliferation of IoT devices is primarily responsible for the data deluge that has engulfed multiple industries. Nevertheless, due to the high dimensionality and complexity of IoT data streams, anomaly detection remains a significant challenge. This suggests that an unsupervised deep learning strategy could be used to identify anomalies in IoT data streams. Instead of relying on labeled data, this method employs deep neural networks, which can be trained to recognize anomalies and comprehend complex patterns. Experiments are conducted on a real-world IoT dataset to evaluate the efficacy and accuracy of the proposed method. The results demonstrate its proficiency in detecting anomalies in IoT data streams, paving the way for a safer, more reliable Internet of Things. Using unsupervised deep learning techniques, the method provides a practicable solution to the age-old problem of IoT anomaly identification.

This paper aims to simultaneously optimize indoor wireless and daylight performance by adjusting the positions of windows and the beam directions of window-deployed reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) for RIS-aided outdoor-to-indoor (O2I) networks utilizing large language models (LLM) as optimizers. Firstly, we illustrate the wireless and daylight system models of RIS-aided O2I networks and formulate a joint optimization problem to enhance both wireless traffic sum rate and daylight illumination performance. Then, we present a multi-modal LLM-based window optimization (LMWO) framework, accompanied by a prompt construction template to optimize the overall performance in a zero-shot fashion, functioning as both an architect and a wireless network planner. Finally, we analyze the optimization performance of the LMWO framework and the impact of the number of windows, room size, number of RIS units, and daylight factor. Numerical results demonstrate that our proposed LMWO framework can achieve outstanding optimization performance in terms of initial performance, convergence speed, final outcomes, and time complexity, compared with classic optimization methods. Meat and dairy products are negatively impacted by a lack of technology in the livestock industry in developing countries. To cater for this challenge, the Internet of Things (IoT), Node-MCU, and intelligent wireless sensor nodes are deployed to create a new smart dairy monitoring system. A cow collar with a temperature sensor, a GPS module, and an environmental parameter regularization system are included. Data from modules is stored in a separate database using an innovative IoT -based front end. All the deployed WS nodes can determine whether the environment is stable or not at any given time. Sensors built inside cow collars can assess vital indications like temperature and pulse rate, as well as the animal's exact location. The design of the Cow collar also has a feature that automatically alerts the owner. The plug-and-play technology offered is designed to be easy to adapt. When a farm has many animals, automation decreases the need for human involvement and so lowers labor expenses. The exploitation of remote monitoring systems improves the health of the animals and hence yields a better amount of dairy. This study also includes a detailed comparison of the proposed implementation with current systems to demonstrate its originality. Other applications, such as smart monitoring of zoo animals and poultry, may be derived from the proposed technology.

Sensor network localization (SNL) is a challenging problem due to its inherent non-convexity and the effects of noise in inter-node ranging measurements and anchor node position. We formulate a non-convex SNL problem as a multiplayer non-convex potential game and investigate the existence and uniqueness of a Nash equilibrium (NE) in both the ideal setting without measurement noise and the practical setting with measurement noise. We first show that the NE exists and is unique in the noiseless case, and corresponds to the precise network localization. Then, we study the SNL for the case with errors affecting the anchor node position and the inter-node distance measurements. Specifically, we establish that in case these errors are sufficiently small, the NE exists and is unique. It is shown that the NE is an approximate solution to the SNL problem, and that the position errors can be quantified accordingly. Based on these findings, we apply the results to case studies involving only inter-node distance measurement errors and only anchor position information inaccuracies.

Since Thailand has now completely stepped into an aged society there are more than 20% of the population aged 60 years and over. There was also an increase in those who had problems with their balance. One of the main difficulties for these people is walking on their own. This paper presents an automatic walking aid for people with balance or walking problems. A specially designed automatic walking aid can be adjusted to six levels of height. It has an anti-collision warning system at a distance of up to 40 centimeters and displays GPS coordinates via SMS when falling. The experimental results of the prototype automatic walking aid showed that the walking aid could work as designed and could help people with balance problems walk more comfortably.
