With the rapid proliferation of the Internet of Things (IoT), autonomous vehicles (AVs), or self-driving cars, rely heavily on real-time data sharing and message exchanges over wireless networks. AVs use sensors, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and advanced algorithms to perform various functions, enabling users to operate without human intervention. Owing to the flexibility and high mobility of drones, they could aid in the operations of AVs. However, the security and privacy are the main concerns;specifically, the threat of physical capture and violation of anonymity are the main hurdles for realization of secure communication among the AVs and drones. To address these challenges, we propose an anonymous and provably Secure Lightweight Authentication Protocol for unmanned-aerial-vehicle-assisted Internet of Autonomous Vehicles (SLAP-IoAV). The proposed protocol uses cryptographic primitives such as exclusive-OR operations, elliptic-curve cryptography, collision-resistant one-way hashing, and concatenation to ensure robust security. An informal security analysis found that SLAP-IoAV is secure against several known attacks, and a performance analysis established that the protocol has less computational and communication overhead than existing competitive protocols. Additionally, Scyther simulation results confirm that no security vulnerabilities are present. Overall, our protocol delivers superior security and performance, making it well-suited to real-world applications in the AV industry. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

With the development and popularity of BIM (building information model), the application of 3D information models in the municipal engineering entire life cycle is gradually becoming the focus in the field of the operation and maintenance of engineering. This paper deeply analyzes the application prospect of the operation and maintenance system for an urban utility tunnel, while discussing the system's operation structure and major function. Through a practical engineering case, the research team uses the core technique to realize "separation" and "interlinkage" between component block and parameter information, and it shows the technique route from the BIM completion model to the visual tunnel operation and maintenance system completely. The research results provide a reliable basis for the construction and the application of intelligent public municipal construction management system, which is designed based on the interdisciplinary concept of art design and architecture science. © 2020 Totem Publisher, Inc. Combustion-chamber is a critical component of the propulsion engine, which is widely used in the space industry and aeronautics. The goal of this article is to perform a numerical-analysis on the combustion process using a liquid-type propellant. The steps that must be followed until total combustion is achieved are emphasized. It concerns the fuel feeding phase, its injection and the combustion operation. The amount of combustion products and the energy generated are evaluated. It has been shown that the liquid propellant may present an efficient alternative fuel than the kerosene. In addition, the temperature of combustion does not exceed a certain limit to avoid structural problems in the chamber. The parametric survey allowed determining the range of the most influence factors, including the pressure, mixture richness, velocity and flow rates of injection for the fuel and oxidizer. The number and type of injectors revealed a considerable influence on the velocity and flow rates of injection. To maximize thrust force and system propulsion, a careful selection of chamber material and ignition methods is required. A thorough inspection on the issues of walls cooling showed the necessary survey of maximum temperatures that may be reached during the combustion. Finally, an investigation of the thermal exchange through the walls will be very interesting. © 2022, CC BY.

Building project delivery is beset with many long-standing problems. Often, these problems, resulting in failures of facilities and cost-time overruns, are directly related to poor design and design management practices. This motivated the definition of the main aim to develop an initial framing for the design process support systems, incorporating ideas from the human error and performance management domains, and on checklists. In this conceptual paper, a literature review method is used. It is suggested that cognitive systems engineering could be used to conceptualize the designers work and to incorporate checklists into the design process. SpMV is an essential kernel existing in many HPC and data center applications. Meanwhile, the emerging many-core hardware provides promising computational power, and is widely used for acceleration. Many methods and formats have been proposed aiming at better performance of SpMV on many-core platforms. However, there is still lack of a comprehensive comparison of SpMV methods to show their performance difference on sparse matrices with various sparse patterns. Moreover, there is still no systematic work to bridge the gap between SpMV performance and sparse pattern. In this paper, we investigate the performance of 27 SpMV methods with 1500+ sparse matrices on two many-core platforms: Intel Xeon Phi (Knights Landing 7250) and Nvidia GPGPU (Tesla M40). Our work shows that no single SpMV methods is optimal for all sparse patterns, but some methods can achieve approximately the best performance on most sparse matrices. We further select 13 features to describe the sparse pattern and analyze their correlations to the performance of each SpMV method. Our observations should help other researchers and practitioners to better understand the SpMV performance and provide implications to guide the selection of suitable SpMV method. © 2019, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

The facechannel: A fast & furious deep neural network for facial expression recognition

Current state-of-the-art models for automatic Facial Expression Recognition (FER) are based on very deep neural networks that are effective but rather expensive to train. Given the dynamic conditions of FER, this characteristic hinders such models of been used as a general affect recognition. In this paper, we address this problem by formalizing the FaceChannel, a light-weight neural network that has much fewer parameters than common deep neural networks. We introduce an inhibitory layer that helps to shape the learning of facial features in the last layer of the network and thus improving performance while reducing the number of trainable parameters. To evaluate our model, we perform a series of experiments on different benchmark datasets and demonstrate how the FaceChannel achieves a comparable, if not better, performance to the current state-of-the-art in FER. Our experiments include cross-dataset analysis, to estimate how our model behaves on different affective recognition conditions. We conclude our paper with an analysis of how FaceChannel learns and adapt the learned facial features towards the different datasets. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Communication network architectures have been evolving with increased programmability and virtualization of physical infrastructures. While this evolution enables a faster introduction of new services and efficient utilization of resources, the complexities and interdependencies among the physical and virtual infrastructures, as well as the control and management planes, hinder a complete understanding of the system at hand. It is imperative, therefore, to model and study these evolving virtualized infrastructures. We propose a multilevel virtualized network embedding model and study its performance against correlated failures. Our analysis of multiple synthetic network models identified that grid-like infrastructures capture the realistic Internet2 structure the best.

Textiles are essential to humans in a variety of ways, especially clothing. However, the speed at which they end up in landfills is astonishing (one garbage truck per second), posing a severe risk to the environment, if the trend continues. Governments and responsible organizations are starting to make calls to different stakeholders to redesign the textile chain from linear to circular economy. In this perspective, we highlight some of the possible approaches to be undertaken including the need for the creation of renewable raw materials sources, rethinking production, maximum use and reuse of textile products, reproduction, and recycling strategies, redistribution of textiles to new and parallel markets, and improvising means to extend the textiles lifetime.

Despite the recency of their conception, Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) constitute an extensively-researched machine learning sub-field for the creation of synthetic data through deep generative modeling. GANs have consequently been applied in a number of domains, most notably computer vision, in which they are typically used to generate or transform synthetic images. Given their relative ease of use, it is therefore natural that researchers in the field of networking (which has seen extensive application of deep learning methods) should take an interest in GAN-based approaches. The need for a comprehensive survey of such activity is therefore urgent. In this paper, we demonstrate how this branch of machine learning can benefit multiple aspects of computer and communication networks, including mobile networks, network analysis, internet of things, physical layer, and cybersecurity. In doing so, we shall provide a novel evaluation framework for comparing the performance of different models in non-image applications, applying this to a number of reference network datasets. © 2021, CC BY-NC-ND.
