Quantum cryptography(QC) as an important technology to protect the security of the future network communication, has gained extensive attention from both academia and industry in recent years. This paper provides a concise up-to-date review of QC, including Quantum key distribution(QKD), Quantum authentication, Quantum public-key cryptography(QPKC), and so on. Our aim is to pave a comprehensive and solid starting ground for interested readers. We firstly clarify the definition of QC. Secondly, we present the current understanding of QC from different levels, including the basic knowledge of quantum information processing, QC protocols and the attacks in QC. Finally, we discuss the challenges and opportunities in this hopeful field.

Throughout its history, Operational Research has evolved to include a variety of methods, models and algorithms that have been applied to a diverse and wide range of contexts. This encyclopedic article consists of two main sections: methods and applications. The first aims to summarise the up-to-date knowledge and provide an overview of the state-of-the-art methods and key developments in the various subdomains of the field. The second offers a wide-ranging list of areas where Operational Research has been applied. The article is meant to be read in a nonlinear fashion. It should be used as a point of reference or first-port-of-call for a diverse pool of readers: academics, researchers, students, and practitioners. The entries within the methods and applications sections are presented in alphabetical order. The authors dedicate this paper to the 2023 Turkey/Syria earthquake victims. We sincerely hope that advances in OR will play a role towards minimising the pain and suffering caused by this and future catastrophes. © 2023, CC BY.

A Markov Traffic Model for Signalized Traffic Networks Based on Bayesian Estimation

In order to better understand the stochastic dynamic features of signalized traffic networks, we propose a Markov traffic model to simulate the dynamics of traffic link flow density for signalized urban traffic networks with demand uncertainty. In this model, we have four different state modes for the link according to different congestion levels of the link. Each link can only be in one of the four link state modes at any time, and the transition probability from one state to the other state is estimated by Bayesian estimation based on the distributions of the dynamic traffic flow densities, and the posterior probabilities. Therefore, we use a first-order Markov Chain Model to describe the dynamics of the traffic flow evolution process. We illustrate our approach for a small traffic network. Compared with the data from the microscopic traffic simulator SUMO, the proposed model can estimate the link traffic densities accurately and can give a reliable estimation of the uncertainties in the dynamic process of signalized traffic networks.

Eliminating NB-IoT interference to LTE system: A sparse machine learning based approach

—Narrowband internet-of-things (NB-IoT) is a competitive 5G technology for massive machine-type communication scenarios, but meanwhile introduces narrowband interference (NBI) to existing broadband transmission such as the long term evolution (LTE) systems in enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) scenarios. In order to facilitate the harmonic and fair coexistence in wireless heterogeneous networks, it is important to eliminate NB-IoT interference to LTE systems. In this paper, a novel sparse machine learning based framework and a sparse combinatorial optimization problem is formulated for accurate NBI recovery, which can be efficiently solved using the proposed iterative sparse learning algorithm called sparse cross-entropy minimization (SCEM). To further improve the recovery accuracy and convergence rate, regularization is introduced to the loss function in the enhanced algorithm called regularized SCEM. Moreover, exploiting the spatial correlation of NBI, the framework is extended to multiple-input multiple-output systems. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed methods are effective in eliminating NB-IoT interference to LTE systems, and significantly outperform the state-of-the-art methods. Practical Stabilization of Passive Nonlinear Systems with Limited Control

This article addresses output feedback stabilization of continuous-time nonlinear systems by choosing control actions from a finite set. Working under the assumption that the system under consideration is passive and large-time norm observable, we propose a static feedback mapping, from the output space to the finite set of control actions, which is shown to be practically stabilizing if the convex hull of certain control actions (in the chosen finite set) contains the origin in its interior. Consequently, to construct this stabilizing feedback, it suffices to have, in addition to a zero symbol, another m + 1 elements in the control set which form an m -simplex in ℝ m (the input, and output space).

Phase Change Materials (PCMs) are widely recognized for their potential in thermal energy storage systems due to their high latent heat capacity. However, their practical application is significantly hindered by low thermal conductivity, which limits the charging and discharging rates of energy. This review provides a comprehensive and critical synthesis of recent passive techniques developed to enhance the thermal performance of PCMs. These include finned structures, porous media, nanoparticle dispersion, geometrical modifications, and multi-PCM strategies. Quantitative comparisons show that the use of fins can reduce melting time by up to 65 %, while metallic porous matrices can improve thermal conductivity by over 500 %. Incorporation of nanoparticles has demonstrated up to 25 % enhancement in heat transfer rates, albeit with increased viscosity. Geometrical innovations and multi-PCM layering have enabled tailored thermal responses across temperature ranges, suitable for applications such as solar thermal systems and building-integrated energy storage. Furthermore, this review identifies trade-offs associated with each method, including design complexity, cost, and material compatibility, and presents a comparative performance table to guide selection based on system requirements. Hybrid enhancement strategies, such as nanoparticle-doped PCMs embedded in metal foams, are also proposed as a promising direction for future research. The review concludes with specific, forward-looking insights, highlighting opportunities for PCM-based solutions in solar desalination, cold-chain transport, and passive building cooling under real-world constraints.

This study aims to delineate the origin, purpose, process, and results of the research, focusing on investigating the impact of different exterior wall materials on outdoor thermal indicators in Nagoya, Japan. The ultimate goal is to mitigate the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect and improve urban outdoor thermal comfort. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is employed to evaluate two types of exterior wall materials: diffuse highly reflective (DHR) and retro-reflective (RR) materials. The research process involves assessing various outdoor thermal indices, such as wet-bulb globe temperature (WBGT), standard effective temperature (SET*), and universal thermal climate index (UTCI), in order to comprehend the thermal performance of each material. The results of the study indicate that the RR material consistently outperforms the DHR material in terms of outdoor thermal comfort, despite having slightly lower solar reflectance. This is supported by lower surface temperatures and surface heat flow associated with the RR material, suggesting reduced indoor cooling loads and significant energy savings for cooling purposes. These findings highlight the potential of RR material in mitigating the UHI effect and enhancing urban outdoor thermal conditions. By establishing a critical relationship between exterior wall materials and outdoor thermal indicators, this study proposes the adoption of RR materials for urban building exteriors as a sustainable and economically viable solution to improve urban outdoor thermal comfort and enhance the quality of life for residents.

The Pongkor post-mining area is designated as one of the ecotourism areas in Bogor. This area has biodiversity of flora and fauna. This study aims to: (1) analysis the importance value index (IVI) of flora types;(2) analysis species richness index, species diversity index, and relative species abundance index;(3) analysis the beauty, the uniqueness and the rarity of the flora and fauna types. The method used in this research is quantitative descriptive. Based on the identification results, 185 species of flora are distributed in this region. During the rainy season, 15 species of herpetofauna were identified, 32 types of aves, and 4 types of mammals, while in the dry season 19 species of herpetofauna were identified, 23 types of aves, and 2 types of mammals. Based on the results of the analysis conducted on these flora and fauna, there are flora species that have high IVI values and some beautiful and unique flora species that are in the category of endangered species. Besides that, there are also fauna species which have a value of species richness index, species diversity index, and relative species abundance index, as well as some beautiful, unique, and fauna species that are in the category of endangered species. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

New tools from neuroscience allow design researchers to explore design neurocognition. By taking the advantage of EEG's temporal resolution we give up spatial resolution to focus on the performance of time-related design tasks. This paper presents results from an experiment using EEG to measure brain activation to study mechanical engineers and architects to compare their design neurocognition. In this study, we adopted and extended the tasks described in a previous fMRI study of design neurocognition reported in the literature. The block experiment consists of a sequence of 3 tasks: problem solving, basic design and open design using a physical interface. The block is preceded by a familiarizing pre-task using the physical interface and then extended to a fourth task using free-hand sketching. Brainwaves were collected from both mechanical engineers and architects. Results comparing 36 mechanical engineers and architects while designing were produced. These results indicate design cognition differences between the two domains in task-related power between the problem-solving task and the design tasks, in temporal resolution and transformed power. © 2019 Design Society.
