Automatic tuning of sparse matrix-vector multiplication on multicore clusters

To have good performance and scalability, parallel applications should be sophisticatedly optimized to exploit intra-node parallelism and reduce inter-node communication on multicore clusters. This paper investigates the automatic tuning of the sparse matrix-vector(Sp MV) multiplication kernel implemented in a partitioned global address space language, which supports a hybrid thread- and process-based communication layer for multicore systems. One-sided communication is used for inter-node data exchange, while intra-node communication uses a mix of process shared memory and multithreading. We develop performance models to facilitate selecting the best configuration of threads and processes hybridization as well as the best communication pattern for Sp MV. As a result, our tuned Sp MV in the hybrid runtime environment consumes less memory and reduces inter-node communication volume, without damaging the data locality. Experiments are conducted on 12 real sparse matrices. On 16-node Xeon and 8-node Opteron clusters, our tuned Sp MV kernel gets on average 1.4X and 1.5X improvement in performance over the well-optimized process-based message-passing implementation, respectively.

A search for narrow low-mass resonances decaying to quark-antiquark pairs is presented. The search is based on proton-proton collision events collected at 13 TeV by the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb−1, recorded in 2016. The search considers the case where the resonance has high transverse momentum due to initial-state radiation of a hard photon. To study this process, the decay products of the resonance are reconstructed as a single large-radius jet with two-pronged substructure. The signal would be identified as a localized excess in the jet invariant mass spectrum. No evidence for such a resonance is observed in the mass range 10 to 125 GeV. Upper limits at the 95% confidence level are set on the coupling strength of resonances decaying to quark pairs. The results obtained with this photon trigger strategy provide the first direct constraints on quark-antiquark resonance masses below 50 GeV obtained at a hadron collider.

Search for a Light Charged Higgs Boson Decaying to a W Boson and a CP-Odd Higgs Boson in Final States with eμμ or μμμ in Proton-Proton Collisions at s=13 TeV

A search for a light charged Higgs boson (H+) decaying to a W boson and a CP-odd Higgs boson (A) in final states with eμμ or μμμ is performed using data from pp collisions at s=13 TeV, recorded by the CMS detector at the LHC and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb−1. In this search, it is assumed that the H+ boson is produced in decays of top quarks, and the A boson decays to two oppositely charged muons. The presence of signals for H+ boson masses between 100 and 160 GeV and A boson masses between 15 and 75 GeV is investigated. No evidence for the production of the H+ boson is found. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are obtained on the combined branching fraction for the decay chain, t→bH+→bW+A→bW+μ+μ−, of 1.9×10−6 to 8.6×10−6, depending on the masses of the H+ and A bosons. These are the first limits for these decay modes of the H+ and A bosons.

Managing deadline-constrained bag-of-tasks jobs on hybrid clouds

Outsourcing jobs to a public cloud is a cost-effective way to address the problem of satisfying the peak resource demand when the local cloud has insufficient resources. In this paper, we study on managing deadline-constrained bag-of-tasks jobs on hybrid clouds. We present a binary nonlinear programming (BNP) problem to model the hybrid cloud management where the utilization of physical machines (PMs) in the local cloud/cluster is maximized when the local resources are enough to satisfy the deadline constraints of jobs, while when not, the rent cost from the public cloud is minimized. To solve the BNP problem in polynomial time, we propose the heuristic algorithm whose main idea is assigning a task to a core of a used PM (in local cloud) or a rented virtual machine (VM) (in public cloud) such that the difference between the finish time of the task and its deadline is minimal in all of assignments. If none of unassigned tasks can be completed within its deadline, the algorithm adds an available PM with most capacity or rents a new VM with highest cost-performance ratio and assigns tasks to the new PM/VM as previous step. Extensive experimental results show that our heuristic algorithm saves 16.2%-76% cost and improves 47.3%-182.8% resource utilizations for finishing jobs within their respective deadlines with comparable overheads, compared with first fit decreasing algorithm. © 2016 Society for Modeling & Simulation International (SCS)

We present the results of the first combined dark matter search targeting the Galactic Centre using the ANTARES and IceCube neutrino telescopes. For dark matter particles with masses from 50 to 1000 GeV, the sensitivities on the self-annihilation cross section set by ANTARES and IceCube are comparable, making this mass range particularly interesting for a joint analysis. Dark matter self-annihilation through the τ+τ−, µ+µ−, b¯b and W+W− channels is considered for both the Navarro-Frenk-White and Burkert halo profiles. In the combination of 2,101.6 days of ANTARES data and 1,007 days of IceCube data, no excess over the expected background is observed. Limits on the thermally-averaged dark matter annihilation cross section hσAυi are set. These limits present an improvement of up to a factor of two in the studied dark matter mass range with respect to the individual limits published by both collaborations. When considering dark matter particles with a mass of 200 GeV annihilating through the τ+τ− channel, the value obtained for the limit is 7.44 ×10−24cm3s−1 for the Navarro-Frenk-White halo profile. For the purpose of this joint analysis, the model parameters and the likelihood are unified, providing a benchmark for forthcoming dark matter searches performed by neutrino telescopes. With growing urban populations, the World Health Organization has highlighted the importance of urban design for everyone. It is widely recognized that quality of life in the urban environment could be improved through participatory design that includes the active involvement of diverse citizens. Technologies can offer potential tools for such inclusive engagement, however, working together across disciplines and expertise presents key challenges. The design and infrastructure of cities is inherently complex and requires attention to inclusion, translation, sharing and communicating information in effective and constructive ways across diverse constituencies. This workshop intends to bring together a multi-disciplinary community of researchers and designers who are investigating theories, practices, methodologies and technologies of the city;how we live in and (re)adapt them to changing needs together with citizens. This includes technologies that support collecting data on, representing and sharing aspects of urban environments and experiences, architectural envisioning, grass-roots civic engagement, local government planning, activism and creative practice. Our aim is to map a multi-disciplinary agenda for the future of urban HCI.

The Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm is a population-based metaheuristics in which the individuals communicate through decentralized networks. The network can be of many forms but traditionally its structure is predetermined and remains fixed during the search. This paper investigates an alternative approach. The particles are positioned on a 2-dimensional grid of nodes. During the run, they move through the network according to simple rules, while interacting with each other using signs that they leave on the nodes. The links between the particles – and consequently the information flow – are then defined at each time step by the position of the particle on the grid. As a result, each particle’s set of neighbors and connectivity degree varies during the search progress. The particles can move randomly or instead track signs left by other particles on the grid. In this paper, after a formal description of the general model, two different strategies (random and sign-based) are tested and compared to standard topologies on unimodal and multimodal functions, including a rotated and a shifted function with noise from the CEC benchmark. The experiments demonstrate that the dynamics provided by the proposed structure results in a more consistent and stable performance throughout the test set. Recent technological progress has enabled the spread of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) to new applications possible with the aim to improve citizens' quality of life. This idea has been significantly increasing in political agendas as well as in the public services. The concepts of Smart-city or Sustainable-city are possible thanks to the application of technology. The focus of this work is on people with movement disabilities and the goal of the whole system is to meet their real needs and requirements. As a result, this article presents the possibilities offered by new ICTs to design a method for generating knowledge about accessibility issues in urban environments. In this sense, a comprehensive system aided by technology is proposed to analyse the transportation accessibility in a city. The research tries to make visible the most vulnerable groups of citizens, involving them as active participants and to serve as a way of social awareness. It aims to improve the knowledge of the current accessibility level and to improve the interaction and learning of all actors and groups involved - government, institutions, researchers, professionals, people with disabilities and other individuals of society in general. To perform and implement the system, the latest advances in technologies such as GPS positioning, geographic information systems, smart sensing and cloud computing have been used. With the rapid growth of bandwidth-intensive applications, Carrier Aggregation (CA) has been introduced in Long Term Evolution-Advanced (LTE-A) Networks to provide higher data rates. In this paper, we investigate the joint resource block allocation and link adaptation problem with CA in LTE-A dwonlink. The problem is formulated as an Integer Programming problem aimed at maximizing the cell throughtput while guaranteeing Quality of Service (QoS) of each User Equipment (UE), in the form of the minimum transmission rate. We also consider the proportional fairness of radio allocation among UEs. Due to the NP-hardness of the problem, we propose an efficient algorithm QA-PFRA. QA-PFRA consists of two phases. In the first one we assign radio resource to UEs successively for QoS requirements according to UEs' priority, and in the second one we assign CCs to other UEs to maximize the cell weighted throughput. We develop a simulator to evaluate the performance of QA-PFRA. For comparison, we also implement GA algorithm and ERAA algorithm. It is found that the cell throughput obtained by QA-PFRA is about 70 higher than that obtained by ERAA, and QA-PFRA can also achieve higher throughput compared with GA when the UEs are sparsely distributed in the cell. Furthermore, we can observe that Jain's fairness index obtained by QA-PFRA is about 10 higher than that obtained by GA and 40 higher than that obtained by ERAA. © 2016 IEEE.

A search for point-like and extended sources of cosmic neutrinos using data collected by the ANTARES and IceCube neutrino telescopes is presented. The data set consists of all the track-like and shower-like events pointing in the direction of the Southern Sky included in the nine-year ANTARES point-source analysis, combined with the through-going track-like events used in the seven-year IceCube point-source search. The advantageous field of view of ANTARES and the large size of IceCube are exploited to improve the sensitivity in the Southern Sky by a factor ∼2 compared to both individual analyses. In this work, the Southern Sky is scanned for possible excesses of spatial clustering, and the positions of preselected candidate sources are investigated. In addition, special focus is given to the region around the Galactic Centre, whereby a dedicated search at the location of SgrA* is performed, and to the location of the supernova remnant RXJ 1713.7-3946. No significant evidence for cosmic neutrino sources is found and upper limits on the flux from the various searches are presented. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.
