Atomic and durable transactions are widely used to ensure the crash consistency in persistent memory (PM). However, whether to use redo or undo logging is still a hotly debated topic in persistent memory systems. In this paper, we empirically study the performance of both redo and undo logging using NVML, a persistent memory transactional object store framework. Our results on an NVDIMM server show that redo logging significantly outperforms undo logging for workloads in which a transaction updates large number of different objects, while it underperforms undo logging for workloads with intensive read operations. Furthermore, undo logging is more sensitive to the read-to-write ratios, compared to redo logging. Finally, our experiments also demonstrate that asynchronous log truncation is much helpful in redo logging for log-heavy transactions.

Bertsolaritza, Basque improvised contest poetry, offers another sphere to develop robot body language and robot communication capabilities, that shares some similarities with theatrical performances. It is also a new area to work on social robotics. The work presented in this paper makes some steps forward in designing and implementing the set of behaviors the robots need to show in the stage to increase, on the one hand robot autonomy and on the other hand, credibility and sociability.

The ANTARES detector is an undersea neutrino telescope in the Mediterranean Sea. The search for point-like neutrino sources is one of the main goals of the ANTARES telescope, requiring a reliable method to evaluate the detector angular resolution and pointing accuracy. This work describes the study of the Sun "shadow" effect with the ANTARES detector. The shadow is the deficit in the atmospheric muon flux in the direction of the Sun caused by the absorption of the primary cosmic rays. This analysis is based on the data collected between 2008 and 2017 by the ANTARES telescope. The observed statistical significance of the Sun shadow detection is 3.9σ, with an estimated angular resolution of 0.45◦±0.12◦ for downward-going muons. The pointing accuracy is found to be consistent with the expectations and no evidence of systematic pointing shifts is observed. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.

This paper aims to develop a sensor based monitoring and analyzing system for Neuro-Degenerative Disorder patients (NDD); this may consist on SpO2 sensor, Electrophysiological sensors, NIBP, Motion Capture sensors and Eye Monitoring sensor, taking into consideration an acceptable cost for the whole system. Recorded data will be sent to an embedded decision making unit where detection, analysis, classification, prediction and action control will occur. The sensors and the decision making unit will be implemented in a comfortable jacket that doesn't affect the patients' movements and that can be used by several patients with reduced sensor placement alterations. The decision that can be made is creating a stimulus to avoid falling in case of sudden stop while moving, initiating an alarm, sending a notification to a mobile phone application, and/or telemedicine monitoring features. Artificial Neural Networks will be used to classify and predict the abnormal cases where action should be taken, and since the sensors will be continuously recording, it is possible to achieve continuous learning for the ANN as a first phase. Initial models will be defined by testing normal behaviors and some known abnormal behaviors or symptoms related to the electrical activity and other characteristics of the heart, oxygen saturation level, eye activity and body motion.

In order to take advantages of evolutionary algorithms inspired by different biological evolutions, varieties of approaches have been proposed to combine them together. One of them is the portfolio approach, which keeps choosing a component algorithm from a portfolio of evolutionary algorithms (EAs) to run during the optimizing process. In our approach, each component algorithm has its own population and runs independently without information exchange. At the beginning of each generation, only the component algorithm with the best predicted performance is allowed to run. The proposed portfolio approach is tested on the CEC2016 real-parameter single objective optimization benchmarks. The results show that it is competitive.

Text is still the dominant form of human-computer-human communication. Users with certain motor or visual impairments may be unable to use certain text entry interfaces such as the small virtual keyboards on mobile phones effectively due to challenges hitting small targets. Despite the vast amount of research into text entry, no efforts have explored the so-called Russian tap-codes, or knock codes, which were commonly used to communicate between prison inmates. Tapping does not require the user to hit a specific target. This study proposes a theoretical framework for classifying text entry designs. The framework is used to explore 16 text entry designs, namely the classic Russian tap code and design variations exploiting more recent results in text entry research and the context of current hardware, allowing unfeasible designs to be easily eliminated. © 2016 ACM.

A search for astrophysical point-like neutrino sources using the data collected by the ANTARES detector between January 29, 2007 and December 31, 2017 is presented. A likelihood stacking method is used to assess the significance of an excess of muon neutrinos inducing track-like events in correlation with the location of a list of possible sources. Different sets of objects are tested in the analysis: a) a sub-sample of the Fermi 3LAC catalog of blazars, b) a jet-obscured AGN population, c) a sample of soft gamma-ray selected radio galaxies, d) a star-forming galaxy catalog, and e) a public sample of 56 very-high-energy track events from the IceCube experiment. None of the tested sources shows a significant association with the sample of neutrinos detected by ANTARES. The smallest p-value is obtained for the radio galaxies catalog with an equal weights hypothesis, with a pre-trial p-value equivalent to a 2.8 σ excess, equivalent to 1.6 σ post-trial. In addition, the results of a dedicated analysis for the blazar MG3 J225517+2409 are also reported: this source is found to be the most significant within the Fermi 3LAC sample, with 5 ANTARES events located at less than one degree from the source. This blazar showed evidence of flaring activity in Fermi data, in space-time coincidence with a high-energy track detected by IceCube. Addressing the origin of the astrophysical neutrino flux observed by IceCube is of paramount importance. Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) are among the few astrophysical sources capable of achieving the required energy to contribute to such neutrino flux through pγ interactions. In this work, ANTARES data have been used to search for upgoing muon neutrinos in spatial and temporal coincidence with 784 GRBs from 2007 to 2017. The expected neutrino fluxes have been calculated for each GRB, in the framework of the internal shock model. The impact in the neutrino flux calculation of the lack of knowledge on the majority of source redshifts and on other intrinsic parameters of the emission mechanism (e.g. minimum variability timescale, bulk Lorentz factor of the source ejecta) has been quantified. The minimum variability timescale is found to be the parameter which mostly affects the GRB-neutrino flux uncertainty. For the selected sources, ANTARES data have been analysed, maximising the discovery probability of the stacking sample through an extended maximum-likelihood strategy. Since no neutrino event passed the quality cuts set by the optimisation procedure, 90 % confidence level upper limits (with their uncertainty) on the total expected diffuse neutrino flux have been derived, according to the model. The GRB contribution to the observed diffuse astrophysical neutrino flux around 100 TeV is constrained to be less than 10 %. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Analyzing Urban Dynamics of Metropolitan Kolkata, India by Using Landscape Metrics

In India, urban settlements, especially metropolitan cities, are expanding at a rapid pace, transforming non-built-up areas into built-up landscapes inducing various irreversible environmental consequences. A metropolis generally is composed of statutory urban areas at the core and rural or periurban areas at the periphery, with various differences to the core. Therefore, simultaneous study of growth dynamics of different parts in the same metropolis, namely metropolitan urban (core), and metropolitan rural (periphery) seems to be important for effective urban planning. This study attempts to assess the built-up dynamics of the Kolkata Metropolitan Area (KMA) in India using a proposed zoning approach;that is, three different spatial levels of KMA—KMA-Total (the entire KMA), KMA-Urban (metropolitan urban), and KMA-Panchayet (metropolitan rural)—for the time period between 1980 and 2010 employing Shannon's entropy and some other landscape metrics integrated with Remote Sensing and Geographical Information System. The results show that the built-up expansion of KMA-Total is gradually becoming compact over time. But, within KMA, built-up growth of KMA-Urban has declined sharply, becoming more compact, whereas, KMA-Panchayet is experiencing a higher degree of built-up growth featured by dispersed and fragmented growth. Importantly, the zoning approach proposed in this study appears to be an effective one to analyze spatiotemporal built-up dynamics in large cities. © 2016, © 2016 Applied Geography Conferences.
