Hybrid software development models are increasingly being used in various industries to provide the benefits of agile methodologies in software development while maintaining traditional model frameworks that the rest of the organization may still be utilizing. This paper presents a new tripartite software model (VSK) that has integrated agile methodologies, the Scrum and the Kanban methodologies, along with the traditional methodology the V-model. Since the V-model is commonly used in the automotive space for systems engineering activities, this was selected as the traditional framework for this new tripartite model. The bottom of the V will contain two separate Agile development methodologies that will run in parallel. A scrum methodology will be utilized for new feature development and release planning activities. In parallel to the scrum methodology a Kanban methodology will be used to track bugs and performance issues. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper explores the application of reinforcement learning (RL) to torpedo guidance with a focus on obstacle avoidance and target acquisition in dynamic environments. By employing a dual-actor network approach and a regularization technique for the critic network, the proposed method demonstrates robust performance in scenarios with random obstacle placements and target directions. Our results show that the system effectively navigates toward the target while avoiding obstacles, leveraging reinforcement learning to optimize torpedo trajectories. The study addresses the challenges of overestimation and underestimation biases common in reinforcement learning methods, such as deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG), by utilizing the double actors and regularized critics (DARC) algorithm. This approach has potential implications for enhancing the autonomy and efficiency of military applications in complex and uncertain settings. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper proposes a thermal reduction method of DC-link capacitors and SiC MOSFETs in two-level inverters based on discontinuous PWM. The converter reliability has been extensively studied at both the device and the inverter levels through physics of failure analysis. The failures of switch modules and capacitors constitute about 50% of inverter system failures, primarily due to cumulative thermo-mechanical damage from power loss and thermal stress. The power loss and thermal behavior of switching modules are analyzed to reduce the rate of failures in this paper. The proposed method alleviates the thermal stress by applying discontinuous PWM, thereby decreasing power loss. Moreover, a phase-shifted scheme is applied to decrease the ripple current by reducing the loss and temperature of the DC-link capacitor, despite a deterioration in the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the output current. The proposed thermal reduction method is verified by simulation results. © 2024 IEEE.

Emerging power electronic drives and converters are planned to operate at high voltages with high switching frequencies (up to a few hundred kHz), which will affect the reliability of insulation systems of windings of electrical machines. To evaluate the insulation quality under such high-frequency pulses, lifetime test is a prominent way. For simplification of test procedure, turn-to-turn insulation samples are approved by IEC 60034-18-42. In past studies, the impact of switching frequencies has been investigated under lower frequencies (up to 20 kHz), which cannot address the challenges of next-generation wide bandgap (WBG)-based power converters. In this study, the lifetimes of turn-to-turn insulations under high switching frequencies (50 kHz) are tested at four different rise times (50 ns, 100 ns, 150 ns, 200 ns), and the impact of switching frequency on the lifetime of the insulation is analyzed. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper describes a test setup to support the development of a bi-directional acoustic communication link relying on adaptive transceivers. The physical layer relies on the JANUS protocol for discovery of new nodes and assessment of the channel conditions. The transmitter has a bandwidth of 5 kHz at a center frequency of 27.5 kHz, while the receiver relies on broadband hydrophones. The embedded system allows to transmit in diverse underwater scenarios, and the System-on-Chip is programmed to transmit various waveforms including through coded Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM). Key elements of the program are described to maintain real-time operation on the embedded systems. At the receiver, the data is sampled at 96 kHz and a 4 Mbps cabled link to a host interface is developed to diagnose the communication link reliability. © 2024 IEEE.

Classical convergence analyses for optimization algorithms rely on the widely-adopted uniform smoothness assumption. However, recent experimental studies have demonstrated that many machine learning problems exhibit nonuniform smoothness, meaning the smoothness factor is a function of the model parameter instead of a universal constant. In particular, it has been observed that the smoothness grows with respect to the gradient norm along the training trajectory. Motivated by this phenomenon, the recently introduced (L0, L1)smoothness is a more general notion, compared to traditional L-smoothness, that captures such positive relationship between smoothness and gradient norm. Under this type of non-uniform smoothness, existing literature has designed stochastic first-order algorithms by utilizing gradient clipping techniques to obtain the optimal O(-3) sample complexity for finding an -approximate first-order stationary solution. Nevertheless, the studies of quasiNewton methods are still lacking. Considering higher accuracy and more robustness for quasi-Newton methods, in this paper we propose a fast stochastic quasi-Newton method when there exists non-uniformity in smoothness. Leveraging gradient clipping and variance reduction, our algorithm can achieve the best-known O(-3) sample complexity and enjoys convergence speedup with simple hyperparameter tuning. Our numerical experiments show that our proposed algorithm outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches. © 2024 IEEE.

In modern drone applications, precise positioning in formation flying is one of the primary issues that needs to be addressed. Among these, passive positioning technology is a commonly used and effective method for precise formation flying. However, most such methods require the transmission and reception of radio signals, which is inconvenient in scenarios requiring electromagnetic silence. This study proposes a drone formation positioning correction strategy based solely on azimuth passive positioning. This strategy, through geometric analysis and mathematical visualization techniques combined with polar coordinate positioning and a 0-1 planning model, corrects the positions of drones with deviations, optimizes flight efficiency, and enhances safety. Experimental results show that this method can effectively improve the positioning accuracy of drone formations under conditions of electromagnetic silence, demonstrating substantial practical value and prospects for wider application. © 2024 SPIE.

Hyperspectralchannel reconstruction transforms a subsampled multispectral image into hyperspectral imaging, providing higher spectral resolution without a dedicated acquisition hardware and camera. Multi-stage Spectral-wise Transformer for Efficient Spectral Reconstruction (MST++) is a state-of-the-art channel reconstruction technique, but it faces memory limitations for high spatial-resolution images. In this context, we introduced VITMST++, a novel architecture incorporating Vision Transformer embeddings for spatial compression, multi-resolution image context, and a custom channel-weighted loss. Developed for the ICASSP 2024 HyperSkin Challenge, VITMST++ outperforms the state-of-the-art MST++ in both performance and computational efficiency in channel reconstruction. In this work, we perform a deeper analysis on the main aspects of VITMST++ efficiency, quantitative performance, and generalization to other datasets. Results show that VITMST++ achieves similar values of SAM and SSIM hyperspectral reconstruction metrics when compared to state-of-the-art methods, while consuming up to three fold less memory and needing up to 10 times fewer multiply-add operations. © 2020 IEEE.

Different from two-level converters (TLCs), the sub-module (SM) capacitor voltages of modular multilevel converters (MMCs) include significant ripple components when an MMC is loaded on the ac side. Therefore, the conventional symmetric third-order zero-sequence voltage injection (ZSVI) widely used in TLCs does not guarantee the maximum output voltage synthesis. In this paper, a novel optimal ZSVI merely using instantaneous arm output voltage references and SM capacitor voltages is proposed. The proposed method is based on simple online calculation and makes the output voltage of the MMC be its instantaneous theoretical limit. The proposed method is valid not only in steady state but also in transient state, and its performance is not dependent on the accuracy of the model (e.g. losses and SM capacitance) inherently. The validity of the proposed method is verified experimentally by a 300 Vdc, 4 kW, and 7 level down-scaled prototype MMC. © 2024 IEEE.
