PIWI-interacting RNAs (piRNAs) are a type of small non-coding RNAs which bind with the PIWI proteins to exert biological effects in various regulatory mechanisms. A growing amount of evidence reveals that exosomal piRNAs are potential biomarkers for diagnosis and treatment of complex diseases. Effective methods for the prediction of exosomal piRNAs are the foundation of piRNA functional research. In this study, we propose an end-to-end deep network for identifying exosomal piRNAs based on features learned from natural language processing (NLP) models for sequence embedding with attention mechanism. First, a benchmark dataset is constructed by processing piRNA subcellular localization annotated data and sequence data. Moreover, bagging positive unlabeled learning is applied to get the reliable negative set. Finally, we treat a piRNA sequence as a sentence and its k-mer subsequence as a token. Sequence embedding models with self-attention mechanism is designed to extract features from exosome piRNA sequences, which are used for the prediction task. Compared with three competing methods, our model achieves the best performance and reveals the key factors of exosomal piRNA sequences by the attention mechanism. Our model characterizes exosomal piRNAs and could be beneficial for researchers to investigate exosomal piRNAs' functions. © 2022 IEEE.

This paper considers the problem of approximating the infinite-horizon value function of the discrete-time switched LQR problem. In particular, we propose a new value iteration method to generate a sequence of monotonically decreasing functions that converges exponentially to the value function. This method facilitates us to use coarse approximations resulting from faster but less accurate algorithms for further value iteration, and thus, our method is capable of achieving a better approximation for a given computation time compared with the existing methods. Two numerical examples are presented in this paper to illustrate the effectiveness of our method.

Language-queried target sound extraction (TSE) aims to extract specific sounds from mixtures based on language queries. Traditional fully-supervised training schemes require extensively annotated parallel audio-text data, which are labor-intensive. We introduce a parallel-data-free training scheme, requiring only unlabelled audio clips for TSE model training by utilizing the contrastive language-audio pre-trained model (CLAP). In a vanilla parallel-data-free training stage, target audio is encoded using the pre-trained CLAP audio encoder to form a condition embedding, while during testing, user language queries are encoded by CLAP text encoder as the condition embedding. This vanilla approach assumes perfect alignment between text and audio embeddings, which is unrealistic. Two major challenges arise from training-testing mismatch: the persistent modality gap between text and audio and the risk of overfitting due to the exposure of rich acoustic details in target audio embedding during training. To address this, we propose a retrieval-augmented strategy. Specifically, we create an embedding cache using audio captions generated by a large language model (LLM). During training, target audio embeddings retrieve text embeddings from this cache to use as condition embeddings, ensuring consistent modalities between training and testing and eliminating information leakage. Extensive experiment results show that our retrieval-augmented approach achieves consistent and notable performance improvements over existing state-of-the-art with better generalizability.

In this paper, we revisit the problem of enlarging the domain of attraction for linear systems with asymmetric actuator saturation. We partition the state space into several regions according to the sign of each input and rewrite the linear system subject to asymmetric actuator saturation as an equivalent switched system, each subsystem of which is associated with one partition of the state space and is a linear system subject to symmetric actuator saturation. Based on this equivalent representation of the system, we present a Lyapunov function, which is composed of a set of quadratic functions associated with matrices that are not required to be positive definite. We establish sufficient conditions for regional stability and, based on them, formulate optimization problems to enlarge the estimate of the domain of attraction. Simulation results illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

This paper considers the problem of monitoring and adaptively estimating an environmental field, such as temperature or salinity, using an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV). The AUV moves in the field and persistently measures environmental scalars and its position in its local coordinate frame. The environmental scalars are approximately linearly distributed over the region of interest, and an adaptive estimator is designed to estimate the gradient. By orthogonal decomposition of the velocity of the AUV, a linear time-varying system is equivalently constructed, and the sufficient conditions on the motion of the AUV are established, under which the global exponential stability of the estimation error system is rigorously proved. Furthermore, an estimate of the exponential convergence rate is given, and a reference trajectory that maximizes the estimate of the convergence rate is obtained for the AUV to track. Numerical examples verify the stability and efficiency of the system.

Incremental few-shot semantic segmentation (IFSS) aims to incrementally expand a semantic segmentation model’s ability to identify new classes based on few samples. However, it grapples with the dual challenges of catastrophic forgetting (due to feature drift in old classes) and overfitting (triggered by inadequate samples in new classes). To address these issues, a novel approach is proposed to integrate pixel-wise and region-wise contrastive learning, complemented by an optimized example and anchor sampling strategy. The proposed method incorporates a region memory and pixel memory designed to explore the high-dimensional embedding space more effectively. The memory, retaining the feature embeddings of known classes, facilitates the calibration and alignment of seen class features during the learning process of new classes. To further mitigate overfitting, the proposed approach implements an optimized example and anchor sampling strategy. Extensive experiments show the competitive performance of the proposed method. This paper introduces a new variational Gaussian filtering approach for estimating the state of a nonlinear dynamic system. We first assume that the predictive distribution of the state is Gaussian and derive an iterative method for updating the state posterior in the natural parameter space through KullbackLeibler divergence minimization. The obtained update rule is the same as that of the conjugate-computation variational inference technique in Bayesian learning. The derivation here is simpler and more insightful. We then impose a Wishart prior on the inverse of the state prediction covariance to take into account the impact of approximating the state predictive distribution using a Gaussian density on the state posterior estimation. The prediction covariance is identified jointly with the state using variational inference and the established state posterior update rule to achieve the desired Gaussian filtering. Simulation study examines the performance of the proposed filtering framework in target tracking based on bearing and range measurements.

Scheduling algorithms in distributed heterogeneous systems have been the subject of extensive research. However, with the advancement of technology, addressing real-time, reliability, and energy consumption issues in dynamic environments has become increasingly critical. Existing studies mostly focus on static approaches, which are challenging to achieve scheduling objectives rapidly and adaptively. Therefore, we propose a novel dynamic energy-aware scheduling algorithm for deadlines and reliability constrained applications. Firstly, we introduce a prioritization method for multitasking applications to ensure more applications meet their deadlines. Subsequently, we present specific strategies for task allocation to achieve a better trade-off between energy consumption and reliability. Experimental results on randomly generated applications validate the superiority of our proposed method in terms of performance compared to other algorithms.

The phase retrieval (PR) problem involves recovering a signal from amplitude-only measurements and has been extensively studied in various physical measurement and signal processing systems. Recently, there has been increasing interest in the quantized phase retrieval (QPR) problem, where the observed amplitude is quantized to binary values. The existing studies have focused on the noiseless case. In this paper, we address a robust QPR problem that accounts for both quantization and noise. We formulate the robust QPR problem using maximum-likelihood estimation (MLE), which results in a non-convex and challenging optimization problem due to the complexity of its likelihood function. To obtain a high-quality solution, we develop an expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm combined with the Wirtinger flow, allowing us to convert the problem into a more manageable form at each iteration. Our method is implemented on both randomly generated synthetic data and image reconstruction tasks. The results demonstrate that our approach significantly enhances signal recovery performance under the combined effects of quantization and noise. Additionally, the proposed method exhibits better runtime efficiency compared to existing approaches.
