This paper is concerned with signal predictive subband quantization in oversampled filter banks. It uses the analysis tools of robust filtering and control to obtain a worst case power spectral analysis of the prediction error system. The analysis removes the unrealistic assumptions on the quantization noises in the present literature and leads to the definition of H_(infinity) optimal signal predictor. Based on this analysis, an LMI optimization based method is obtained to design the H_(infinity) optimal signal predictor with guaranteed inverse stability. Simulation results are presented to show the advantages of the H_(infinity) optimal signal predictor over the conventional signal predictor.

Resource-Constrained Sensor Routing for Parameter Estimation of Distributed Systems

We consider a setting where mobile nodes with sensing capacity form a network whose mission is to collect measurements for parameter estimation of a distributed parameter system (DPS). Two techniques to optimize node motions are presented which constitute a trade-off between the achievable accuracy of parameter estimates and limited motion resources of sensor network nodes. The framework is based on the use of the D-optimality criterion defined on the Fisher information matrix associated with the estimated parameters as a measure of the information content in the measurements. Restrictions on maximal distances traveled by sensor nodes are imposed so as to guarantee realizable solutions. The approach is to convert the problem to a canonical optimal control one in Mayer form, in which both the control forces of the sensors and the initial sensor positions are optimized. Numerical solutions are then obtained using the M atlab PDE toolbox and the RIOTS_95 optimal control toolbox which handles various constraints imposed on the node motions. Illustrative numerical experiments with the proposed techniques are presented.

This paper introduces a generalized solution to support the development and reuse of practical educational scenarios. It is intended to complement the reuse initiatives already proposed for LMS resources, such as LOM, SCORM or IMS. These initiatives are mainly focused in media contents. By the contrary, this proposal is concerned with the tools that can be used in practical educational scenarios: simulators, remote labs, communication tools, etc. It considers the way in which these tools can be described, but also the way in which these tools are intended to be used. At this point, three main issues are supported: authorizations, awareness and interaction. This proposal is part of a more comprehensible development based in the language PoEML. It extends the IMS learning design capabilities to support practical scenarios through a generalized solution.

Existence of software platform, which will allow us to monitor the patients' bio-parameters and provide us with services which help with full health care, is more than relevant these days. The aim of our project is to provide solution which can be used in different spheres of health care and which will be available through PDA (Personal Digital Assistant), web or desktop clients. Practically developing system works with an ECG sensor connected to mobile equipment, such as PDA/Embedded, based on Microsoft Windows Mobile operating system. The whole system is based on the architecture of .NET Compact Framework, and SQL Server. The project was tested in real environment in cryogenic room (-136degC).

For the last decade, the need for electric driven vehicle has risen rapidly due to the global warming problem. A high efficient motor need to be developed to replace traditional engine. In this paper, the authors present a fuzzy logic controller (FLC) for sensorless brushless dc (BLDC) motor. The proposed FLC is based on the terminal voltage measurement as the sensorless method for BLDC motor control. There are two modules designed in the speed control of BLDC motor, i.e. command and regulating modules. Command module is to find and issue commutation period and PWM duty cycle to the BLDC motor for desired speed. The regulating module is designed by applying a FLC with sensorless technology and is used to regulate the speed of BLDC motor under various disturbances, such as loading effect. Two resistances are adopted to detect the zero-crossing point (ZCP) of back-EMF signal on the unexcited phase instead of using the expensive Hall sensors. The regulating module can regulate accurately and quickly the PWM duty cycle by fuzzy reasoning which makes the BLDC motor rotate smoothly at desired rotation speed even there exists an external disturbance. In order to reduce the computational load of real-time FLC for the microcontroller C8051F330, we can perform the FLC computation off-line to cover nearly all cases. These data will be recorded and organized as a Look-Up Table (LUT). This paper shows that a regulating module designed by FLC is better than a none regulation module or a regulating module with a P controller.

Optimal trajectories in energetic environment for underwater vehicles can be computed using a numerical solution of the optimal control problem (OCP). An underwater vehicle is modeled with the six dimensional nonlinear and coupled equations of motion, controlled by DC motors in all degrees of freedom. An energy performance index that should be minimized may be considered. This leads to a two point boundary value problem (TPBVP). The resulting TPBVP is generally solved using iterative methods. In this paper, the applications of two different intelligent algorithms are briefly studied and compared versus the generally acceptable conjugate gradient penalty (CGP) method for the OCP. Genetic algorithm (GA) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) methods are applied to solve OCP. Two approaches for performance index minimization, using GA and PSO, are proposed. CGP method is used to solve the TPBVP, by applying Euler-Lagrange equation. The simulation results show that the trajectories obtained by the intelligent methods were better than that of conjugate gradient penalty. After analyzing the simple path planning problem, the problem energetic environments consisting some energy sources is propounded. The optimal paths are found using GA and PSO algorithms. The problem of collision avoidance in an energetic environment is solved and energy avoidance paths are computed.

As a way to reduce the on-line computational burden, explicit solution to the problem of optimal control for some classes of hybrid systems can be found by reformulating the problem as multi-parametric MILP problems. The main contribution of this paper is the introduction of an approximation algorithm for solving a general class of mp-MILP problems. The algorithm wisely selects those binary sequences which make important improvement in the objective function if considered. It is shown that considerable reduction in computational complexity could be achieved by introduction of adjustable level of suboptimality. So a family of suboptimal controllers would be obtained for which the level of error and complexity can be adjusted by a tuning parameter. Several important theoretical results about approximate solutions to the mp-MILP problem are presented. It is shown that no part of the parameter space is lost during the approximation. Also it is proved that the error in the achieved approximate solutions is monotonically increasing function of the tuning parameter. The reduced complexity achieved by the proposed approach is clarified through an illustrative example.

This paper provides a methodology to thermally manage an electronic control unit while reducing its radiated emissions. Measurements of the radiated emission levels for a particular electronic control unit revealed excessive levels. Electronic control units utilize pulse width modulated signals to control an external load. The rise and fall times of the pulse width modulated signal impact both the radiated emissions and the thermal behavior of the electronic control unit. The method proposed in this paper establishes a generalized relationship between the rise and fall times of the electronic control unit's pulse width modulated signals to its associated radiated emission levels and thermal behavior.

This paper compares task jitter measurement performed under RTLinux and RTX hard real-time operating systems. Both the operating environments represent hardware abstraction layer extensions to general-purpose operating systems, and make possible to create a real-time system according to the POSIX 1003.13 PSE 54 profile (multipurpose system). The paper is focused on discussion of experimental results, obtained on PC hardware, and their interpretation.

System identification for nonlinear systems is difficult. Complex systems do not always have good theoretical models. The circulating fluidized bed is an example of complex nonlinear energy systems. One method for modeling system identification is using neural networks. Feedback networks have good accuracy offline, but are generally too complex to implement for online system identification. Feedforward networks are quick enough to work as online model, but generally lack the necessary accuracy. In the paper we develop an online system identification model based on the diagonal recurrent neural network method using Matlab. The model was tested with a cold flow circulating fluidized bed in both and offline and online capacity. The results show that the DRNI works well for modeling the nonlinear system of the circulating fluidized bed.
