Multi-criteria Optimization Scheduling of Surgical Units: A Case Study at Policlinico Umberto I of Rome

Nowadays, managing Operating Rooms (ORs) in healthcare systems presents a significant challenge, with underutilization of surgical facilities being a key concern. Several decision factors must be considered, including the number of ORs, operating hours, target utilization rates, and the possibility of patient transfers between surgical units (SUs). This study presents a multi-criteria mixed-integer linear optimization model designed for the specific context of Policlinico Umberto I in Rome. The model uses an open scheduling approach to determine the optimal day, time, and OR allocation for weekly surgeries. Using real data from two SUs and four ORs over twelve weeks, we assess the impact of different operating time policies on hospital Key Performance Indicators. Additionally, we introduce randomly generated data to simulate surgery priorities and further validate our model. Results demonstrate the effectiveness of mathematical optimization in improving OR utilization and overall healthcare efficiency. © The Author(s) 2025.

In the context of digital transformation in the occupational health and safety sector, this research focuses on the efficacy of virtual reality training tools in ensuring workplace safety during maintenance activities. A comprehensive methodology, including focus groups and workshops, is utilized to define a study protocol and evaluate the proposed virtual reality solution. The study suggests that immersive virtual reality training, which integrates the Skill-Rule-Knowledge framework, has the potential to enhance workers’ ability to manage unforeseen situations. It emphasizes the importance of practical, scenario-based training and outlines a detailed evaluation process. Automatic generation of Chinese classical poetry is still a challenging problem in artificial ***-cently,Encoder-Decoder models have provided a few viable methods for poetry ***,by reviewing the pri-or methods,two major issues still need to be settled:1)most of them are one-stage generation methods without further polishing;2)they rarely take into consideration the restrictions of poetry,such as tone and ***,some an-cient Chinese poets tended first to write a coarse poem underlying aesthetics and then deliberated its semantics;while oth-ers first create a semantic poem and then refine its *** this basis,in order to better imitate the human creation procedure of poems,we propose a two-stage method(i.e.,restricted polishing generation method)of which each stage fo-cuses on the different aspects of poems(i.e.,semantics and aesthetics),which can produce a higher quality of generated *** this way,the two-stage method develops into two symmetrical generation methods,the aesthetics-to-semantics method and the semantics-to-aesthetics *** particular,we design a sampling method and a gate to formulate the tone and rhyme restrictions,which can further improve the rhythm of the generated *** results demon-strate the superiority of our proposed two-stage method in both automatic evaluation metrics and human evaluation met-rics compared with baselines,especially in yielding consistent improvements in tone and rhyme.

Topology optimization in decentralised federated learning settings enables the design of policies aimed at minimizing the number of communication rounds needed to reach algorithmic convergence. Given a federation of autonomous agents, finding the optimal topology which guarantees that the underlying graph is connected is still an open issue. This paper proposes a novel energy-aware topology optimization algorithm with the goal to derive an optimal topology which maximizes the algebraic connectivity of the corresponding graph in presence of energy and communication constraints. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is validated in the context of a consensus-based federated learning algorithm over an e-Health scenario. © 2024 IEEE.

In this paper, the objective for a group of unmanned aerial vehicle agents (UAVs) to achieve three dimensional circumnavigation around a moving target which information is made available to all agents in the group. The cooperative circumnavigation is to drive the UAVs to orbit around the target according to a given elliptical desired spatial formation. Due to the thrust limitation needed to fly the drone, existing cyclic pursuit algorithms cannot be extended directly to achieve this objective. Thus the proposed algorithm is worked out to take into account this constraint in order to achieve such objective. The drones are subject to unknown external disturbance, also the masses of those agent drones are assumed to be unknown. Furthermore, the communication cost can be decreased and the Zeno behavior is shown to be excluded. The proposed controller guarantees the bounded control effort irrespective of the external disturbance and model uncertainties of the drone. Numerical simulations are conducted to illustrate the efficacy of the approach. © 2023 IEEE.

An overactuated heterogeneous multi-robot system is considered, this being characterized by both a redundancy of the number of agents with respect to the tasks to be performed and input redundancy for each individual agent. We propose an algorithm that, based on local information only, can simultaneously assign the tasks, consistently with the different nature of each robot, and allocate the control efforts while satisfying the constraints on the actuators. The performances of the proposed method have been analysed by means of a simulation study, considering different scenarios and illustrating also the resilience of the approach with respect to faults.

Satellite imagery is crucial for tasks like environmental monitoring and urban planning. Typically, it relies on semantic segmentation or Land Use Land Cover (LULC) classification to categorize each pixel. Despite the advancements brought about by Deep Neural Networks (DNNs), their performance in segmentation tasks is hindered by challenges such as limited availability of labeled data, class imbalance and the inherent variability and complexity of satellite images. In order to mitigate those issues, our study explores the effectiveness of a Cut-and-Paste augmentation technique for semantic segmentation in satellite images. We adapt this augmentation, which usually requires labeled instances, to the case of semantic segmentation. By leveraging the connected components in the semantic segmentation labels, we extract instances that are then randomly pasted during training. Using the DynamicEarthNet dataset and a U-Net model for evaluation, we found that this augmentation significantly enhances the mIoU score on the test set from 37.9 to 44.1. This finding highlights the potential of the Cut-and-Paste augmentation to improve the generalization capabilities of semantic segmentation models in satellite imagery.

Graph neural networks (GNNs) excel in learning from network-like data but often lack interpretability, making their application challenging in domains requiring transparent decision-making. We propose the Graph Kolmogorov–Arnold Network (GKAN), a novel GNN model leveraging spline-based activation functions on edges to enhance both accuracy and interpretability. Our experiments on five benchmark datasets demonstrate that GKAN outperforms state-of-the-art GNN models in node classification, link prediction, and graph classification tasks. In addition to the improved accuracy, GKAN’s design inherently provides clear insights into the model’s decision-making process, eliminating the need for post-hoc explainability techniques. This paper discusses the methodology, performance, and interpretability of GKAN, highlighting its potential for applications in domains where interpretability is crucial. © 2024, CC BY-NC-SA.

By spreading out computing workloads over multiple levels, the Edge-to-Cloud continuum paradigm improves the performance of applications that are sensitive to latency. However, real-time scheduling is difficult on the Edge computing layer since it consists of a variety of nodes with varying uptime. In this paper, we address this issue by proposing an online and adaptive scheduling algorithm based on a continuous learning Reinforcement Learning. Our algorithm determines each work request individually, optimizing scheduling policies to meet real-time application requirements while taking environmental energy and battery limits into account. We validate the efficacy of our approach in dynamically assigning tasks, particularly in scenarios where Edge nodes exhibit variable speeds and unpredictable failures, while efficiently managing energy resources and battery constraints through extensive simulations and comparisons with static scheduling strategies.

AI-Augmented Business Process management Systems (ABPMSs) are innovative information systems with increased flexibility, autonomy, and conversational capability. These systems can be boosted by Large Language Models (LLMs), renowned for their ability to handle natural language processing tasks. Nevertheless, no significant empirical validations exist about their usefulness in process-driven decision support. In this study, we propose a business process-oriented LLM framework, for enacting actionable conversations with workers involved in a business process, leveraging Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) to enrich process-specific knowledge. The methodology has been assessed to evaluate its capacity to produce precise responses to inquiries posed by users within a public administration context. The preliminary study shows the framework’s ability to identify specific activities and sequence flows within the targeted process model, thereby providing valuable insights into its potential for improving ABPMSs. © 2024 Copyright for this paper by its authors.
