VMUXE an approach to user experience evaluation for virtual museums

This paper presents a new approach for the evaluation of User Experience (UX) aspects applied to virtual museums (VM) - VMUXE. A wide percentage of projects and applications for VMs are often "born and buried" in digital labs, without having been experimented and monitored with people. These "prototypes" are the result of experts, technicians, curators, combined together to give birth for multidisciplinary and avant-garde outputs. Earlier attempts to evaluate VM installations failed due to the lack of strategy facing the multidimensional complexity in studying and comparing digital applications in different installations using different devices and metaphors offering different UXs. As a conclusion "communicating" culture through the aid of advanced technology was not a technological issue, but an epistemological one. Setting up a good process of evaluation and analysis is therefore important for establishing next generation virtual museums (NGVM) aiming to reach certain goals such as knowledge exchange, cognitive improvement and heritage communication. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

This work presents a methodology for designing online web presentations reusing a large scale, interactive and immersive VR installation by mapping assets as well as interactions to a low capability environment. With the emergence of WebGL plugin-free interactive 3D graphics inside limited information processing environments, e.g. browser technologies, becomes reality. However, macro VR worlds typically use large or even out-of-core data sets in order to produce and communicate scientifically relevant content. The major challenge still remains on how we can redesign and optimize applications that have been planned for macro VR worlds and map those to adequate concepts of micro scale worlds. We showcase this in the area of virtual archaeology for the online virtual museum of "Villa Di Livia", part of the bigger project "Flaminia Reloaded", in which several limitations could become crucial. The elaborated workflow could easily be adopted by other VMs and assist in future migrations. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Magic lens and static peephole interfaces are used in numerous consumer mobile phone applications such as Augmented Reality browsers, games or digital map applications in a variety of contexts including public spaces. Interface performance has been evaluated for various interaction tasks involving spatial relationships in a scene. However, interface usage outside laboratory conditions has not been considered in depth in the evaluation of these interfaces. We present findings about the usage of magic lens and static peephole interfaces for playing a find-and-select game in a public space and report on the reactions of the public audience to participants? interactions. Contrary to our expectations participants favored the magic lens over a static peephole interface despite tracking errors, fatigue and potentially conspicuous gestures. Most passersby did not pay attention to the participants and vice versa. A comparative laboratory experiment revealed only few differences in system usage. Copyright 2012 ACM.

xioScreen stands for a series of prototype installations of interactive public displays that have been developed, deployed, and evaluated at Hochschule Augsburg over the last 5 years. On the one hand xioScreen installations are part of an emerging digital signage system that informs students and campus visitors about events, talks, etc. On the other hand, xioScreen installations serve as testbeds for exploring new forms of interactive entertainment. Our initial working hypothesis was that students would take advantage of public screens as shared playgrounds for new gaming experiences. In terms of user participation, however, this did not work out so far - therefore other forms of active user participation have been explored as well. In this paper, we report on a number of conducted design-deployment-evaluation cycles and discuss lessons learned so far. © 2012 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

This paper describes a novel technology that incorporates affective learning capability into virtual environment (VE) based training systems to enhance existing training simulation frameworks through the integration of affective state assessment and feedback mechanisms. The technology dynamically monitors a trainee's affective state and then uses emotional state induction techniques to drive the trainee's emotional state towards the target emotional state specified in the lesson plan. The technology is currently being customized for warfighter training simulators, it however can be applied to any other types of virtual environment based training systems such as medical crew training or aviation training.
