Cloud service providers (CSP) provide on-demand cloud computing services, reduces the cost of setting-up and scaling-up IT infrastructure and services, and stimulates shorter establishment times for start-ups that offer or use cloud-based services. Task reneging or dropping sometimes occur when a task waits in the queue longer than its timeout or execution deadline, or it is compromised and must be dropped from the queue or as an active queue management strategy to avoid tail dropping of tasks when the queues are full. Reneged or dropped tasks could be resubmitted provided they were not dropped due to security reasons. In this paper, we present a simple M/M/c/N queueing model of a cloud computing physical machine, where the interarrival times and the services times are exponentially distributed, with N buffer size and c virtual machines running in parallel. We present numerical examples to illustrate the effect of task reneging and task resubmission on the queueing delay, probability of task rejection, and the probability of immediate service. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2020.

The paper presents research focused on decision reducts, a feature reduction mechanism inherent to rough sets theory. As a reduct enables to protect the discriminative properties of attributes with respect to described concepts, from the point of data representation, a reduct length is considered to be the most important measure of its quality. However, such approach is insufficient while taking into account the performance of a reduct-based rule classifier applied to test samples. When many reducts of the same length are available, they can lead to vastly different predictions. The paper provides a description for the proposed procedure for iterative reduct generation, which results in decrease of diversity in the observed levels of accuracy, supporting reduct selection. The procedure was applied for binary classification with balanced classes, for the stylometric task of authorship attribution.

The paper is dedicated to the area of feature selection, in particular a notion of attribute rankings that allow to estimate importance of variables. In the research presented for ranking construction a new weighting factor was defined, based on relative reducts. A reduct constitutes an embedded mechanism of feature selection, specific to rough set theory. The proposed factor takes into account the number of reducts in which a given attribute exists, as well as lengths of reducts. Two approaches for reduct generation were employed and compared, with search executed by a genetic algorithm. To validate the usefulness of the reduct-based rankings in the process of feature reduction, for gradually decreasing subsets of attributes, selected through rankings, sets of decision rules were induced in classical rough set approach. The performance of all rule classifiers was evaluated, and experimental results showed that the proposed rankings led to at least the same, or even increased classification accuracy for reduced sets of features than in the case of operating on the entire set of condition attributes. The experiments were performed on datasets from stylometry domain, with treating authorship attribution as a classification task, and stylometric descriptors as characteristic features defining writing styles.

The neural correlates of face individuation – the acquisition of memory representations for novel faces – have been studied only in coarse detail and disregarding individual differences between learners. In their seminal study, (Tanaka, Curran, Porterfield, & Collins, 2006) required the identification of a particular novel face across 70 trials and found that the N250 component in the ERP became more negative from the first to the second half of the experiment, where it reached a similar amplitude as a well-known face. We were unable to directly replicate this finding in our study when we used the original spilt of trials. However, when we applied a different split of trials we observed very similar changes in N250 amplitude. Then, we developed and applied a new two-step explorative-confirmative non-parametric method based on permutation testing to determine the time course of face individuation in individual participants based on single trial N250 amplitudes. We show that the assumption of a steep initial increase of N250 amplitude across multiple presentations of the target face, followed by a plateau, yields plausible results in fitting linear trends for most participants. The transition point from initial acquisition to the plateau phase differed strongly between participants and tended to be earlier when performance in target face recognition was better. Hence, face individuation may be accounted for by a biphasic process of early, fast acquisition, followed by a slower, asymptotic consolidation or maintenance phase. The current approach might be fruitfully applied to further investigations into face individuation and their neural correlates. © 2020, CC BY-NC-ND.

A research team comprised of students and faculty from Central Connecticut State University's (CCSU) School of Engineering, Science, and technology has begun the design, production, and testing of a full-scale helicopter flight simulator with a moving platform. This paper will present the system identication, controller tuning and validation, and comparison of simulator dynamics against available helicopter dynamic models during typical flight maneuvers. The purposes for conducting this research include: i) to build a fully functional flight simulator that can be used as a test bed for students research projects;ii) to apply theoretical lessons of control of dynamic systems to a real, tangible electromechanical system;iii) to provide students with hands-on experience on how to design and y a helicopter. CCSU students have built and programed all of the mechanical and electrical systems. The basic design weight for the simulator is 300 lbs force applied to the pilot seat. The structures are designed to have enough strength to sustain a maximum of 3g and a minimum-1g flight conditions. There are three actuators in place that can be used to rotate the platform in the pitching, rolling, and yawing directions. All electrical systems were designed, fabricated, and assembled by CCSU students. Queuing theory has been extensively used in the modelling and performance analysis of cloud computing systems. The phenomenon of the task (or request) reneging, that is, the dropping of requests from the request queue often occur in cloud computing systems, and it is important to consider it when developing performance evaluations models for cloud computing infrastructures. Majority of studies in the performance evaluation of cloud computing data centres with the use of queuing theory do not consider the fact that the tasks could be removed from queue without being serviced. The removal of tasks from the queue could be due to the user impatience, execution deadline expiration, security reasons, or as an active queue management strategy. The reneging could be correlated in nature, that is, if a request is dropped (or reneged) at any time epoch, and then there is a probability that a request may or may not be dropped at the next time epoch. This kind of dropping (or reneging) of requests is referred to as correlated request reneging. In this paper we have modelled a cloud computing infrastructure with correlated request reneging using queuing theory. An M/M/1/N queuing model with correlated reneging has been used to study the performance analysis of the load balancing server of a cloud computing system. The steady-state as well as the transient performance analyses have been carried out. Important measures of performance like average queue size, average delay, probability of task blocking, and the probability of no waiting in the queue are studied. Finally, some comparisons are performed which describe the effect of correlated task reneging over simple exponential reneging.

This paper presents the redesign of the control electronics for the platform. The hardware design includes a high-power circuit and a low-power microcontroller board. Both boards respond to the commands sent by flight simulator software X-plane ® to simulate helicopter flight. The purposes for conducting this research include: i) to build a fully functional flight simulator that can be used as a test bed for students research projects;ii) to encourage students and faculty members to use a clear design process in the design of hardware and software components to build a cost-effective flight simulator;iii) to provide students with hands-on experience on how to design and y a helicopter. CCSU students have built all of the mechanical systems. The basic design weflight for the simulator is 300 lbs force applied to the pilot seat. The structures are designed to have enough strength to sustain a maximum of 3g and a minimum -1g flight conditions. There are three actuators in place that can be used to rotate the platform in the pitching, rolling, and yawing directions. The electrical control system was redesigned, fabricated, and assembled by CCSU students. 80% of the sensors and actuators that comprise the simulator are now interfaced by CCSU student designed electronics. The electrical systems consist of a microcontroller board, three high-power H-bridge circuits, AC/DC power supplies, and three actuators. © 2017 by David J. This research project was developed to investigate potential differences between Amplitude Modulated (AM) and Frequency Modulated (FM) screening of multicolor (CMYK) digital printing. The study examined the attributes of print contrast, dot gain, gray balance and color variation and how they may vary based on the screening method used. The experiment was conducted in a color managed digital printing workflow. Color differences were identified in print samples of AM vs. FM screening. Methods used to measure print attributes are detailed, and data was collected, graphed and analyzed. The study shows that measurable differences do exist and that visual changes in color can occur based on the screening method employed. A custom target was printed on the Konica-Minolta C6000 bizHub digital color press using Creo's AM and FM screening technologies. A pilot test was conducted to achieve the target toner density values (+/-0.10) according to in-house standards. During the pilot test, 200 sheets were printed. Once density values were achieved, the digital press was run continuously without operator interference and another 200 sheets were printed (100 sheets for each screening option), from which a total of 160 sheets were randomly selected (80 sheets for each screening option) for the densitometric and colorimetric analysis. Only attributes that measured patches made up of dots or screened tint percentages were used to compare the two screening technologies. Print attributes that utilize solid patches only were not compared. The findings of this study represent specific printing or testing conditions. The findings of this research led to the conclusion that FM screening provides greater print contrast than AM screening. The findings make it difficult to draw conclusions regarding dot gain. Further study is needed to attempt greater control of variables.

In recent years the operating speed of digital electronic systems has increased beyond one GHz. Challenges to the system design are electromagnetic compatibility and signal integrity issues. The electrical and computer engineering technology programs offer courses in digital and analog electronics, and communication circuits along with fundamentals of circuit analysis, signals and systems and electromagnetics. An elective course on Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) will provide students with knowledge of overcoming challenges of meeting standards and signal integrity issues and knowledge of dealing with electronic systems as a whole to the students. This paper discusses the contents of the curriculum to prepare students in technology major for this important industry relevant topic. © 2014 IEEE.
