Advances in intensive care have improved the survival rate of patients with severe acute brain injury, but diagnostic errors for patients with disorders of consciousness are still high. Accurate diagnosis of these patients is very important because effective treatment can vary depending on the diagnosis. In this study, we propose a framework for classifying unresponsive wakefulness syndrome and minimally conscious state, focusing on awareness. In particular, power spectral density and common spatial patterns were used together, considering that spatial information is a key feature in consciousness. The 16 patients with unresponsive wakefulness syndrome and 14 with minimally conscious state underwent resting-state electroencephalography measurements. In addition, we compared the performance by utilizing each frequency (delta, theta, alpha, beta, gamma bands) related to consciousness. As a result, the highest accuracy of 95.06% was achieved by the EEGNet classifier, especially in the beta frequency band. We demonstrated that spatial information is very important in consciousness, as we observed that classification performance improved when common spatial patterns were used. These results provide insight into various frameworks for diagnosing patients with disorders of consciousness and may help patients survive by increasing the diagnosis rate in the future.

Efficient Federated Learning for aioT applications Using Knowledge Distillation

As a promising distributed machine learning paradigm, Federated Learning (FL) trains a central model with decentralized data without compromising user privacy, which makes it widely used by Artificial Intelligence Internet of Things (aioT) applications. However, the traditional FL suffers from model inaccuracy, since it trains local models only using hard labels of data while useful information of incorrect predictions with small probabilities is ignored. Although various solutions try to tackle the bottleneck of the traditional FL, most of them introduce significant communication overhead, making the deployment of large-scale aioT devices a great challenge. To address the above problem, this paper presents a novel Distillation-based Federated Learning (DFL) method that enables efficient and accurate FL for aioT applications. By using Knowledge Distillation (KD), in each round of FL training, our approach uploads both the soft targets and local model gradients to the cloud server for aggregation, where the aggregation results are then dispatched to aioT devices for the next round of local training. During the DFL local training, in addition to hard labels, the model predictions approximate soft targets, which can improve model accuracy by leveraging the knowledge of soft targets. To further improve our DFL model performance, we design a dynamic adjustment strategy of loss function weights for tuning the ratio of KD and FL, which can maximize the synergy between soft targets and hard labels. Comprehensive experimental results on well-known benchmarks show that our approach can significantly improve the model accuracy of FL without introducing significant communication overhead. Agriculture has undergone some very important changes over the last few decades. The emergence and evolution of precision agriculture has allowed to move from the uniform site management to the site-specific management, with both economic and environmental advantages. However, to be implemented effectively, site-specific management requires within-field spatial variability to be well-known and characterized. In this paper, an algorithm that delineates within-field management zones in a maize plantation is introduced. The algorithm, based on triclustering, mines clusters from temporal remote sensing data. data from maize crops in Alentejo, Portugal, have been used to assess the suitability of applying triclustering to discover patterns over time, that may eventually help farmers to improve their harvests. © 2021, The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

The known Chinese sentiment dictionary has universal applicability, lacks the expansion of proprietary domains, and lacks support for network words. This paper proposes a new approach and applies it to the Internet news sentiment analysis text provided by the CCF Big data Computing Intelligence Contest. First, the corpus is segmented in Chinese to obtain candidate sentiment words that have not appeared in the sentiment dictionary. The candidate sentiment words are calculated in different sentimental texts. The proportion of appearance is obtained, and the emotional tendency of candidate emotional words is obtained, and then it is merged with the emotional vocabulary ontology database to obtain the expanded emotional dictionary. Experiments show that the expanded sentiment dictionary is better than the known Chinese sentiment vocabulary ontology database in the above corpus. © 2021 IEEE.

Towards Accurate Camouflaged Object Detection with Mixture Convolution and Interactive Fusion

Camouflaged object detection (COD), which aims to identify the objects that conceal themselves into the surroundings, has recently drawn increasing research efforts in the field of computer vision. In practice, the success of deep learning based COD is mainly determined by two key factors, including (i) A significantly large receptive field, which provides rich context information, and (ii) An effective fusion strategy, which aggregates the rich multi-level features for accurate COD. Motivated by these observations, in this paper, we propose a novel deep learning based COD approach, which integrates the large receptive field and effective feature fusion into a unified framework. Specifically, we first extract multi-level features from a backbone network. The resulting features are then fed to the proposed dual-branch mixture convolution modules, each of which utilizes multiple asymmetric convolutional layers and two dilated convolutional layers to extract rich context features from a large receptive field. Finally, we fuse the features using specially-designed multilevel interactive fusion modules, each of which employs an attention mechanism along with feature interaction for effective feature fusion. Our method detects camouflaged objects with an effective fusion strategy, which aggregates the rich context information from a large receptive field. All of these designs meet the requirements of COD well, allowing the accurate detection of camouflaged objects. Extensive experiments on widely-used benchmark datasets demonstrate that our method is capable of accurately detecting camouflaged objects and outperforms the state-of-the-art methods. We present a review of high-performance automatic modulation recognition (AMR) models proposed in the literature to classify various Radio Frequency (RF) modulation schemes. We replicated these models and compared their performance in terms of accuracy across a range of signal-to-noise ratios. To ensure a fair comparison, we used the same dataset (RadioML-2016A), the same hardware, and a consistent definition of test accuracy as the evaluation metric, thereby providing a benchmark for future AMR studies. The hyperparameters were selected based on the authors’ suggestions in the associated references to achieve results as close as possible to the originals. The replicated models are publicly accessible for further analysis of AMR models. We also present the test accuracies of the selected models versus their number of parameters, indicating their complexities. Building on this comparative analysis, we identify strategies to enhance these models’ performance. Finally, we present potential opportunities for improvement, whether through novel architectures, data processing techniques, or training strategies, to further advance the capabilities of AMR models. © 2025, CC BY.

Segmentation of focal liver lesions serves as an essential preprocessing step for initial diagnosis, stage differentiation, and post-treatment efficacy evaluation. Multimodal MRI scans (e.g., T1WI, T2WI) provide complementary information on liver lesions and is widely used for diagnosis. However, some modalities (e.g., T1WI) have high resolution but lack of important visual information (e.g., edge) belonged to other modalities (T2WI), it is significant to enhance tissue lesion quality in T1WI using other modality priors (T2WI) and improve segmentation performance. In this paper, we propose a graph learning based approach with the motivation of extracting modality-specific features efficiently and establishing the regional correspondence effectively between T1WI and T2WI. We first project deep features into a graph domain and employ graph convolution to propagate information across all regions for extraction of modality-specific features. Then we propose a mutual information based graph co-attention module to learn weight coefficients of one bipartite graph, which is constructed by the fully-connection of graphs with different modalities in the graph domain. At last, we get the final refined features for segmentation by re-projection and residual connection. We validate our method on a multimodal MRI liver lesion dataset. Experimental results show that the proposed approach achieves improvement of liver lesion segmentation in T1WI by learning guided features from multimodal priors (T2WI) compared to existing methods. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

We construct product formulas for exponentials of commutators and explore their applications. First, we directly construct a third-order product formula with six exponentials by solving polynomial equations obtained using the operator differential method. We then derive higher-order product formulas recursively from the third-order formula. We improve over previous recursive constructions, reducing the number of gates required to achieve the same accuracy. In addition, we demonstrate that the constituent linear terms in the commutator can be included at no extra cost. As an application, we show how to use the product formulas in a digital protocol for counterdiabatic driving, which increases the fidelity for quantum state preparation. We also discuss applications to quantum simulation of one-dimensional fermion chains with nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor hopping terms, and two-dimensional fractional quantum Hall phases.

Central Asia (CA) faces a severe water crisis exemplified by the shrinking Aral Sea. However, little is known about the entire region, particularly the numerous small water bodies that are vulnerable to climate change yet vital for regional sustainability. We examined water bodies as small as 0.0045 km2 across CA from 1992 to 2020, identifying 66,215 water bodies in 2020, 82.2% of which were previously unstudied. In contrast to the well-documented decline of the Aral Sea, other water bodies have expanded by 10.7% (8714.3 km2), with a net gain of 15,831 lakes since 1992. These findings challenge the perception of a drying CA and provide evidence of a warm-wet climate trend, which is redistributing water resources and creating opportunities for transforming water management to address the long-standing water crisis in CA. © 2025 science China Press
