In response to legislation, companies are now mandated to honor the right to be forgotten by erasing user data. Consequently, it has become imperative to enable data removal in Vertical Federated Learning (VFL), where multiple parties provide private features for model training. In VFL, data removal, i.e., machine unlearning, requires removing specific features across all samples, ensuring privacy in federated learning. To address this challenge, we propose SecureCut, a novel Gradient Boosting Decision Tree (GBDT) framework that effectively enables both instance unlearning and feature unlearning without the need for retraining from scratch. Leveraging a robust GBDT structure, we enable effective data deletion while reducing degradation of model performance. Extensive experimental results on popular datasets demonstrate that our method achieves superior model utility and forgetfulness compared to the state-of-the-art methods. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work that investigates machine unlearning in VFL scenarios. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

With the rapid advancement of blockchain technology, its utilization has become widespread across various domains, resulting in the accumulation of significant volumes of valuable data. This trend has created an increasing demand for efficient querying of blockchain data. However, the inherent structure of blockchain leads to low querying efficiency and limited support for complex queries. Therefore, there is a trend toward migrating data to off-chain storage for querying purposes. The untrustworthy nature of the off-chain environment necessitates data validation. However, existing validation schemes incur high costs and fail to ensure the timely updating of the off-chain data. To address the challenges above, we propose ChainSafari, a general, efficient, and real-time synchronized scheme for verifiable querying on the blockchain. In our scheme, we design a general data model for storing transactions of various blockchains and develop an efficient authenticated data structure (ADS) based on this data model, enabling efficient verifiable queries for multiple data types in parallel. Furthermore, we propose a multi-party synchronization detection and recovery protocol to ensure the consistency of on-chain and off-chain data. Finally, we implement a prototype system of ChainSafari and conduct extensive experiments. With the advent of advancements in future sixth-generation (6G) communication systems, Internet of Things (IoT) devices, characterized by their limited computational and communication capacities, have become integral in our lives. These devices are deployed extensively to gather vast amounts of data in real-time applications. However, their restricted battery life and computational resources present significant challenges in meeting the requirements of advanced communication systems. Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) has emerged as a promising solution to these challenges within the IoT realm in recent years. Despite its potential, securing MEC infrastructure in the context of IoT remains an open task. This study explores the operational dynamics of a secured IoT-enabled MEC infrastructure, focusing on providing real-time, on-demand, secure computational resources to low-powered IoT devices. It outlines a joint optimization problem to maximize computational throughput, minimize device energy consumption, reduce computational latency, and mitigate security overhead. An optimization algorithm is introduced to address these challenges by jointly allocating resources, thereby optimizing throughput, conserving energy, and meeting latency benchmarks through dynamic system adaptation. The effectiveness of the proposed model and algorithm is demonstrated through comparisons with relevant benchmark schemes, highlighting its efficiency in various scenarios. This work showcases the potential of advancements in encryption to deliver scalable security solutions with reduced resource consumption as the number of devices increases. © 2013 IEEE.

Precise detection of plant diseases is essential in agriculture to maximize crop management and yield. The present study presents an innovative approach that integrates convolutional neural networks (CNNs) with local binary patterns (LBPs) in order to enhance the categorization of plant leaf diseases. The intricacy of plant disease images complicates the evaluation of their many features by conventional approaches. To solve this, the suggested technique utilizes the strengths of both CNNs and LBPs. The CNN component is highly effective in extracting discriminative features from raw pictures using hierarchical representations, which are crucial for differentiating between different illness categories. Simultaneously, the LBP descriptor enhances its usefulness by acquiring intricate texture information from specific areas of the images, so providing more effectiveness in distinguishing small differences resulting from various diseases. Utilizing a feature fusion approach, the merging of CNN and LBP features merges spatial and textural data, resulting in a more thorough representation of the input images. The fusion described herein significantly improves the precision of plant disease classification. The analysis of benchmark datasets of plant leaf diseases showed that this integrated method outperforms the use of CNNs or LBPs individually in terms of classification accuracy. The research findings indicate that the suggested approach, which combines deep Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) with Linear Bayesian Processes (LBPs), provides a more efficient approach for detecting plant leaf illnesses. This, in turn, makes a substantial contribution to crop management and agricultural productivity.

Advances in digitization and resource-sharing business models have created new opportunities for manufacturing companies, enhancing competitiveness and resilience. However, these benefits bring computational challenges in efficiently planning and scheduling shared resources. Therefore, there is a need for scalable and quick solutions for practical applications. Shared manufacturing systems share characteristics with parallel machine scheduling, allowing for the application of advancements from this domain. This research focuses on Multi-Agent Parallel Machine Scheduling (MAPMS) in shared manufacturing, specifically addressing scenarios involving two parallel machines and distinct agents managing exclusive, set of non-overlapping orders. The study introduces a novel multi-objective mixed integer programming (MIP) model for order scheduling across multiple facilities, accounting for sequence-dependent setup times between orders. It also proposes a new heuristic method designed for industrial use. Benchmark instances demonstrate the practicality of both the MIP model and heuristic, contributing valuable insights into MAPMS challenges in shared manufacturing environments.

Distributed Split Computing Using Diffusive Metrics for UAV Swarms

In large-scale UAV swarms, dynamically executing machine learning tasks can pose significant challenges due to network volatility and the heterogeneous resource constraints of each UAV. Traditional approaches often rely on centralized orchestration to partition tasks among nodes. However, these methods struggle with communication bottlenecks, latency, and reliability when the swarm grows or the topology shifts rapidly. To overcome these limitations, we propose a fully distributed, diffusive metric-based approach for split computing in UAV swarms. Our solution introduces a new iterative measure, termed the aggregated gigaflops, capturing each node’s own computing capacity along with that of its neighbors without requiring global network knowledge. By forwarding partial inferences intelligently to underutilized nodes, we achieve improved task throughput, lower latency, and enhanced energy efficiency. Further, to handle sudden workload surges and rapidly changing node conditions, we incorporate an early-exit mechanism that can adapt the inference pathway on-the-fly. Extensive simulations demonstrate that our approach significantly outperforms baseline strategies across multiple performance indices, including latency, fairness, and energy consumption. These results highlight the feasibility of large-scale distributed intelligence in UAV swarms and provide a blueprint for deploying robust, scalable ML services in diverse aerial networks. MCT-Net: a multi-branch hybrid CNN-transformer model for medical image segmentation

In recent years, neural networks have demonstrated substantial progress in medical image segmentation. However, accurately segmenting objects in medical images is often restricted by edge blurring, which complicates the delineation of structures of interest. The purpose of this study is to develop a multi-branch hybrid CNN-transformer model to address the issue of edge blurring in medical image segmentation. This approach enables more precise edge detection and segmentation. Integrating hybrid CNN and transformer decoders facilitates detailed recovery while preserving global structures, thus minimizing errors in regions with blurred edges. Additionally, we incorporate a hybrid attention mechanism at the model’s bottleneck to enhance feature transfer between the encoder and decoder. The model was trained using the ACDC, Synapse, and polyp datasets, with a focus on improving segmentation accuracy in regions with blurry edges. Experimental results reveal that the proposed model surpasses existing state-of-the-art methods on the ACDC, Synapse, and polyp datasets, demonstrating its superior performance and effectiveness. These results suggest that the proposed model offers a significant improvement in handling edge blurring, with potential applications in enhancing medical image analysis and diagnostics.

The advent of high-throughput transcriptomic technologies has generated vast transcriptomic datasets, challenging current analytical methodologies with their sheer volume and complexity. The Grouping-Scoring Modeling (G-S-M) approach is one of the recent approaches that treat groups of genes (or clusters of genes) by embedding prior biological knowledge with machine learning in order to detect the most significant groups for classification tasks. The G-S-M might need to treat thousand ten thousand of groups (scoring those groups) which might affect the speed and performance of the algorithm. In response, this study introduces the Pre Scoring G-S-M model, an enhancement of the established Grouping-Scoring-Modeling (G-S-M) framework. This approach incorporates a Pre-Scoring component that leverages the Limma package for its empirical Bayes methods to optimize initial transcriptomic data evaluation through a percentage-based selection of statistically significant gene groups. aimed at reducing computational demand and streamlining feature selection, the model also addresses data redundancy by eliminating duplicate gene-disease associations. application to nine human gene expression datasets from the GEO database showed promising results. It demonstrated improvements in computational efficiency and analytical precision while reducing the number of features selected per dataset compared to the traditional G-S-M approach, without compromising accuracy. These initial findings highlight the Pre-Scoring G-S-M model's potential to enhance transcriptomic data analysis, indicating a promising direction for future bioinformatics research. © 2025 by SCITEPRESS– science and Technology Publications, Lda.

Additive manufacturing (AM) has revolutionized many industries. Directed energy deposition (DED) offers remarkable utility in size and is an effective method in terms of energy efficiency. The interaction of powder with a laser before coming in contact with the substrate helps to attain fair melting and deposition. However, there is a problem associated with non-uniformity and accumulation of metallic melt on the edges of the manufactured parts which needs to be understood. Herein, the DED process of Ti6Al4V alloy is presented. The phenomenon of recoil pressure and Marangoni actions along the single tracks of the melt pool is defined via the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis. The discrete element modeling (DEM) improves the simulation model output as variable particle diameters are considered, thus mimicking the actual powder size distribution. The simulation results disclosed intricate facts about the flow dynamics of molten material under varying conditions. The stream traces and thermal gradients are evaluated to recognize the effect of laser movement on material cooling and surface tension. The material accumulation occurred at curves and borders due to cooling-induced surface tension alterations, affecting the attribute of the deposited layers. The bi-directional flow patterns are prompted by Marangoni convection and recoil pressure, causing distinct features, including lateral menisci and depression modes. The cooling rates impacted the liquid portion and dilution levels, critical for attaining optimal bonding between deposited layers and substrate. Experimental endorsement using Synchrotron X-ray imaging favored the simulation results, confirming the simulated Marangoni convection effects. This comparison highlights the efficiency of CFD models in predicting molten material behavior, offering a worthy tool for adjusting DED printing parameters. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature

Synergistic Low-Carbon Strategies for Robust Electricity-Gas System Dispatch Under Uncertainty

Reducing carbon emissions in energy systems remains a critical concern, giving rise to a variety of low-carbon initiatives. Current research largely focuses on the application of individual or dual low-carbon technologies (such as carbon capture, carbon trading, renewable energy, etc.), with limited exploration of the synergistic effects of integrating multiple technologies. To address this, we propose a low-carbon economic dispatch model for an electricity-gas system designed to maintain system stability under extreme conditions in renewable energy scenarios. This study integrates several low-carbon technologies—including carbon capture systems, carbon trading mechanisms, demand response strategies, power-to-gas technology, and renewable energy generation—and examines their collective impact on the system. To address uncertainties in renewable energy output, a two-stage robust optimization framework with a min-max-min structure is developed, aiming to determine optimal renewable energy scheduling under extreme scenarios. By employing a column-and-constraint generation algorithm and the KKT conditions, the problem is decomposed into a primary mixed-integer linear programming problem and a series of subproblems, which are solved iteratively to achieve the optimal solution.
