the AtLAS detector at the Large Hadron collider has been used to measure jet substructure modification and suppression in Pb+Pb collisions at a nucleon–nucleon center-of-mass energy sNN=5.02teV in comparison with proton–proton (pp) collisions at s=5.02teV. the Pb+Pb data, collected in 2018, have an integrated luminosity of 1.72nb−1, while the pp data, collected in 2017, have an integrated luminosity of 260pb−1. Jets used in this analysis are clustered using the anti-kt algorithm with a radius parameter R=0.4. the jet constituents, defined by both tracking and calorimeter information, are used to determine the angular scale rg of the first hard splitting inside the jet by reclustering them using the cambridge–Aachen algorithm and employing the soft-drop grooming technique. the nuclear modification factor, RAA, used to characterize jet suppression in Pb+Pb collisions, is presented differentially in rg, jet transverse momentum, and in intervals of collision centrality. the RAA value is observed to depend significantly on jet rg. Jets produced with the largest measured rg are found to be twice as suppressed as those with the smallest rg in central Pb+Pb collisions. the RAA values do not exhibit a strong variation with jet pt in any of the rg intervals. the rg and pt dependence of jet RAA is qualitatively consistent with a picture of jet quenching arising from coherence and provides the most direct evidence in support of this approach.

New particles with large masses that decay into hadronically interacting particles are predicted by many models of physics beyond the Standard Model. A search for a massive resonance that decays into pairs of dijet resonances is performed using 140 fb−1 of proton-proton collisions at s=13 teV recorded by the AtLAS detector during Run 2 of the Large Hadron collider. Resonances are searched for in the invariant mass of the tetrajet system, and in the average invariant mass of the pair of dijet systems. A data-driven background estimate is obtained by fitting the tetrajet and dijet invariant mass distributions with a four-parameter dijet function and a search for local excesses from resonant production of dijet pairs is performed. No significant excess of events beyond the Standard Model expectation is observed, and upper limits are set on the production cross sections of new physics scenarios.

A measurement of the Higgs boson (H) production via vector boson fusion (VBF) and its decay into a bottom quark-antiquark pair (bb¯) is presented using proton-proton collision data recorded by the cMS experiment at s = 13 teV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 90.8 fb⁻¹. treating the gluon-gluon fusion process as a background and constraining its rate to the value expected in the standard model (SM) within uncertainties, the signal strength of the VBF process, defined as the ratio of the observed signal rate to that predicted by the SM, is measured to be μ_Hbb¯^qqh=1.01_−0.46^+0.55. the VBF signal is observed with a significance of 2.4 standard deviations relative to the background prediction, while the expected significance is 2.7 standard deviations. considering inclusive Higgs boson production and decay into bottom quarks, the signal strength is measured to be μ_Hbb¯^incl.=0.99_−0.41^+0.48, corresponding to an observed (expected) significance of 2.6 (2.9) standard deviations. © the Author(s) 2024.

A search for nonresonant Higgs boson pair production in the bb¯bb¯ final state is presented. the analysis uses 126 fb−1 of pp collision data at s=13 teV collected with the AtLAS detector at the Large Hadron collider, and targets both the gluon-gluon fusion and vector-boson fusion production modes. No evidence of the signal is found and the observed (expected) upper limit on the cross section for nonresonant Higgs boson pair production is determined to be 5.4 (8.1) times the Standard Model predicted cross section at 95% confidence level. constraints are placed on modifiers to the HHH and HHVV couplings. the observed (expected) 2σ constraints on the HHH coupling modifier, κλ, are determined to be [−3.5,11.3] ([−5.4,11.4]), while the corresponding constraints for the HHVV coupling modifier, κ2V, are [−0.0,2.1] ([−0.1,2.1]). in addition, constraints on relevant coefficients are derived in the context of the Standard Model effective field theory and Higgs effective field theory, and upper limits on the HH production cross section are placed in seven Higgs effective field theory benchmark scenarios.

the production of a W boson in association with a single charm quark is studied using 140 fb−1 of s=13 teV proton-proton collision data collected with the AtLAS detector at the Large Hadron collider. the charm quark is tagged by the presence of a charmed hadron reconstructed with a secondary-vertex fit. the W boson is reconstructed from the decay to either an electron or a muon and the missing transverse momentum present in the event. the charmed mesons reconstructed are D+→K−π+π+ and D*+→D0π+→(K−π+)π+ and the charge conjugate decays in the fiducial regions where pt(e,μ)>30 GeV, |η(e,μ)|<2.5, pt(D(*))>8 GeV, and |η(D(*))|<2.2. the integrated and normalized differential cross sections as a function of the pseudorapidity of the lepton from the W boson decay, and of the transverse momentum of the charmed hadron, are extracted from the data using a profile likelihood fit. the measured total fiducial cross sections are σfidOS–SS(W−+D+)=50.2±0.2(stat)−2.3+2.4(syst) pb, σfidOS–SS(W++D−)=48.5±0.2(stat)−2.2+2.3(syst) pb, σfidOS–SS(W−+D*+)=51.1±0.4(stat)−1.8+1.9(syst) pb, and σfidOS–SS(W++D*−)=50.0±0.4(stat)−1.8+1.9(syst) pb. Results are compared with the predictions of next-to-leading-order quantum chromodynamics calculations performed using state-of-the-art parton distribution functions. Additionally, the ratio of charm to anticharm production cross sections is studied to probe the s−s¯ quark asymmetry. the ratio is found to be Rc±=0.971±0.006(stat)±0.011(syst). the ratio and cross-section measurements are consistent with the predictions obtained with parton distribution function sets that have a symmetric s−s¯ sea, indicating that any s−s¯ asymmetry in the Bjorken-x region relevant for this measurement is small.

A search for a new pseudoscalar a-boson produced in events with a top-quark pair, where the a-boson decays into a pair of muons, is performed using s=13 teV pp collision data collected with the AtLAS detector at the LHc, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb−1. the search targets the final state where only one top quark decays to an electron or muon, resulting in a signature with three leptons eμμ and μμμ. No significant excess of events above the Standard Model expectation is observed and upper limits are set on two signal models: pp→tt¯a and pp→tt¯ with t→H±b, H±→W±a, where a→μμ, in the mass ranges 15 GeV

the mass of the Higgs boson is measured in the H→ZZ^⁎→4ℓ decay channel. the analysis uses proton–proton collision data from the Large Hadron collider at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 teV recorded by the AtLAS detector between 2015 and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb⁻¹. the measured value of the Higgs boson mass is 124.99±0.18(stat.)±0.04(syst.) GeV. in final states with muons, this measurement benefits from an improved momentum-scale calibration relative to that adopted in previous publications. the measurement also employs an analytic model that takes into account the invariant-mass resolution of the four-lepton system on a per-event basis and the output of a deep neural network discriminating signal from background events. this measurement is combined with the corresponding measurement using 7 and 8 teV pp collision data, resulting in a Higgs boson mass of 124.94±0.17(stat.)±0.03(syst.) the Southern Wide-field Gamma-ray Observatory (SWGO) is the next-generation gamma-ray observatory, currently in an R&D phase. the experiment is expected to have a large array of water cherenkov detectors (WcD) placed at a high elevation (> 4.4 km a.s.l.) in South America. Here we present a WcD concept with reduced surface area and height of stations comprising four PMts at the bottom. We show that it is possible to reach an excellent gamma/hadron discrimination by analysing the data gathered by this station with machine learning techniques. Such performance can be achieved by analysing the shower patterns at the ground or through the PMts signal time structure to tag muons. Moreover, it is shown that the station's performance does not depend on the array configuration (dense or sparse) nor on the shower inclination (θ◦). Such a concept reduces the cost associated with the transport of massive amounts of water to high elevation sites while keeping a high physics performance. therefore, it could be a good candidate station for SWGO, enabling to reach good sensitivities from low energies (∼ 100 GeV) up to the PeV region, covering large ground surface areas (few square km). © 2022 Sissa Medialab Srl.
