this paper addresses the nonlinear autoregressive moving average (NARMA) identification problem in connection with the choice of the model structure (order) and computation of the time varying system coefficients. We introduce an intelligent method thatis based on the reformulation of the problem in the standard state space form and the subsequentimplementation of a bank of extended Kalman filters, each fitting a different order model. the problem is reduced then to selecting the true model, using the well known multi-model partitioning theory. Simulations illustrate thatthe proposed method is selecting the correct model order and identifies the time varying model parameters in real time, while itis insensitive to the noise variations.

Neural Networks are massively parallel processing systems, that require expensive and usually not available hardware, in order to be realized. Fortunately, the development of effective and accessible software, makes their simulation easy. thus, various neural network's implementation tools existin the market, which are oriented to the specific learning algorithm used. Furthermore, they can simulate only fixed size networks. in this work, we present some object-oriented techniques that have been used to defined some types of neuron and network objects, thatcan be used to realize, in a localized approach, some fast and powerful learning algorithms which combine results of the optimal filtering and the multi-model partitioning theory. thus, one can build and implementintelligent learning algorithms that face both, the training as well as the on-line adjustment of the network size. Furthermore, the design methodology used, results to a system modeled as a collection of concurrent executable objects, making easy the parallel implementation. the whole design results in a general purpose tool box which is characterized by maintainability, reusability, and increased modularity. the provided features are shown by the presentation of some practical applications.

computer vision has been successful in several important applications recently. Vision techniques can now be used to build very good models of buildings from pictures quickly and easily, to overlay operation planning data on a neuros- geon’s view of a patient, and to recognise some of the gestures a user makes to a computer. Object recognition remains a very dicult problem, however. the key questions to understand in recognition seem to be: (1) how objects should be represented and (2) how to manage the line of reasoning that stretches from image data to objectidentity. An important part of the process of recognition { perhaps, almost all of it { involves assembling bits of image information into helpful groups. there is a wide variety of possible criteria by which these groups could be established { a set of edge points that has a symmetry could be one useful group; others might be a collection of pixels shaded in a particular way, or a set of pixels with coherentcolour or texture. Discussing this process of grouping requires a detailed understanding of the relationship between whatis seen in the image and whatis actually outthere in the world.

We report on the design and development of a Run time Support System (RtS) which overcomes known disadvantages of other existing systems. the RtS is independent of the configuration - if the system is reconfigured there is no need to change user's processes. it supports both synchronous and asynchronous communication.A system based on the same design philosophy with this RtS is actually implemented for messages of arbitrary length in the prototype of the PADMAVAti machine, being developed within ESPRit Project 1219 (967). Experiments were conducted in this environment and performance measurements were obtained and are reported here.
