Present power system scenario reveals that it has some limitations, leaving behind a scope of improvement in this area. Maintaining a stable, cost-effective and secure operation of power system is therefore a very important and challenging issue. Power can be utilized economically by minimizing its reactive component. At present thysistor-switched capacitors and thyristor-controlled reactors are used as 'active compensators'. Apart from cost considerations, these suffer from constructional limitations and are not suitable for large power handling. Moreover, the triggering circuits used for such capacitors and reactors are quite complicated. However the present work attempts to overcome the above drawbacks and provides an improved system for effecting feedback and open loop control for compensation in power system, which comprises of (i) step down transformer (T), (ii) bipolar junction transistor (BJT) or MOSFET, vacuum triode or any electronic amplifier (Q 1 ), (iii) coupling capacitor (C e ) connected to transformer (T), (iv)power frequency choke (L e ), (v) AC 'biasing inductor (L c ) AC biasing resistors (R1) and. (R3), (vi) blocking capacitor (C b ), (vii) DC emitter feedback resistor (R 2 ), (viii) AC bypass capacitor (C c ), and AC biasing capacitor (C z ), (ix) DC biasing resistors (R b1 ) and (R b2 ) and (x) regulated DC supply voltage source (V cc ).

Mobile networks have become one of the most popular forms of modern world communication. These are different from conventional networks because they lack a fixed infrastructure. Since the nodes are mobile, therefore routes have to be constantly updated. The data transmission on these constantly changing routes has to be maintained efficiently with respect to successful delivery of data packets between source and destination, and delay in this transaction. Along with these two, several other parameters have also to be taken care of. There are several protocols available for data transfer on mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs). No single algorithm could be termed best for all applications. Optimal results for any algorithm depend on the conditions in which it is used, and the parameters which are given high priority. In this paper, some popular routing protocols for MANETs including both proactive protocols such as DSDV, OLSR, FSR and reactive protocols such as AODV, DSR, TORA have been compared and found that on-demand protocols are more befitting than table driven protocols, especially with increased number of nodes and mobility. At low mobility, table driven protocols perform better than on-demand protocols.

Sentiment Analysis is the process of determining subjectivity, polarity and polarity strength of a piece of text. Survey shows that 81% of Internet users have done on-line research on a product at least once. Manual analysis of this reviews is difficult. To mine the overall sentiment or opinion polarity, sentiment analysis can be used to mine the overall sentiment or opinion polarity of the review. The objective of this paper is to extract features from the product reviews and classify reviews into positive, negative and neutral. Feature based sentiment classification approach is used to extract sentiments. It involves preprocessing to remove noise, extraction of features and corresponding descriptors and tagging their polarity. The proposed technique extends the feature based classification approach to incorporate the effect of various linguistic hedges. This approach uses fuzzy functions to emulate the effect of modifiers, concentrators and dilators. The system was evaluated with SFU corpus and the results suggest that sentiment analysis using fuzzy logic performs remarkably well.

Encryption of digital image is a thrust research area worldwide. Visual cryptography is a simple and efficient technique to encrypt digital image without any hard computation. The technique encrypts a secret image into a number of shares and secret image cannot be revealed from any individual share. The secret image can be decoded using human visual system by stacking all the shares. Previous research works are almost restricted to binary images by expanding the pixels. In this paper, a new visual cryptography scheme for grayscale image employing particle swarm optimization (PSO) is proposed. Here shares are generated gradually though a number of iterations from the input secret image by comparing the image with resultant image. The results obtained from the proposed scheme show the strength of the stochastic optimization algorithm in the field of visual cryptography.

Cloud Computing is known as a provider of dynamic services. It utilizes a very large, scalable and virtualized resource over the Internet. So many industries have joined this bandwagon nowadays. One of the major research issues is to maintain good Quality of Service (QoS) of a Cloud Service Provider (CSP). The QoS encompasses different parameters, like, smart job allocation strategy, efficient load balancing, response time optimization, reduction in wastage of bandwidth, accountability of the overall system, etc. The efficient allocation strategy of the independent computational jobs among different Virtual Machines (VM) in a Datacenter (DC) is a distinguishable challenge in the Cloud Computing domain and finding out an optimal job allocation strategy guided by a good scheduling heuristic for such an environment is an NP-complete problem. So different heuristic approaches may be used for better result. The related works with other NP- complete problems have shown that solutions guided by heuristic approaches can often be improved by applying local scheduling procedure for allocating independent jobs in the virtual machines (VM) inside a Datacenter (DC), which, when combined with fast construction heuristics, can find out the shorter schedules on benchmark problems than the other solution methodologies found in different literatures, and in significant less time. This paper highlights a smart job allocation strategy for a CSP by applying Round-Robin (RR) scheduling policy.

River Kshipra is receiving a large volume of untreated sewage daily in its stretch of Ujjain city and the status of water is pathetic during low flow season. A stream water quality model QUAL-2Kw was used in the present study to simulate the contributions from different sources and sinks of dissolved oxygen and to understand the interactions among them. The model was calibrated and validated and the simulated results are in general agreement with measured water quality in River Kshipra. It was established through this study that the QUAL-2Kw model can be used for future river water quality management options for River Kshipra with reasonable accuracy.

In this paper, we present the details of a phonotactic language identification (LID) system developed for five Indian languages, English (Indian), Hindi, Malayalam, Tamil and Kan-nada. Since there are no publicly available speech databases for English, Malayalam and Kannada, we developed the database for each of the target languages by downloading the audio files from YouTube videos and removing the non-speech signals manually. The system was tested using a test data set consisting of 40 utterances with duration of 30, 10, and 3 sees, in each of 5 target languages. The performance evaluation was done separately accordingly to the NIST benchmarking sessions, for 30s, 10s and 3s segments separately. For the baseline system, we got an overall EER of 10.41 %, 19.56 % and 31.45 % for 30, 10, and 3 sees segments when tested with a 3-gram language model. The use of 4-gram language model has helped enhance the performance of the LID system to 9.81 %, 19.38 % and 32.77% respectively for 30,10 and 3 sees test segments. Further, by using the n-gram smoothing, we were able to improve the EER of the LID system, 9.02 %, 18.70 % and 29.24 % for 3-gram language models and 8.88 %, 16.46 % and 32.03 % for 4-gram language models, respectively for 30,10, and 3 sec test segments. The study shows that the use of 4-gram language models can help enhance the performance of LID systems for Indian languages.

Speech/non-speech detection (SND) distinguishes between speech and non-speech segments in recorded audio and video documents. SND systems can help reduce the storage space required when only speech segments from the audio documents are required, for example content analysis, spoken language identification, etc. In this work, we experimented with the use of time domain, frequency domain and cepstral domain features for short time frames of 20 ms. size along with their mean and standard deviation for segments of size 200 ms. We then analysed if selecting a subset of the features can help improve the performance of the SND system. Towards this, we experimented with different feature selection algorithms, and observed that correlation based feature selection gave the best results. Further, we experimented with different decision tree classification algorithms, and note that random forest algorithm outperformed other decision tree algorithms. We further improved the SND system performance by smoothing the decisions over 5 segments of 200 ms. each. Our baseline system has 272 features, a classification accuracy of 94.45 % and the final system with 8 features has a classification accuracy of 97.80 %.

Fingerprint matching is the main module of fingerprint-based person authentication system. Accuracy of fingerprint matching is an important objective of this type authentication system. Multiple features are used for better matching accuracy but more features add more computational complexity as well as time and space complexity. In this paper, we proposed an approach of fingerprint based authentication system where fingerprint matching is carried out using spacial information (distance) of minutiae points only. This approach is simple and it needs very small space to store templates. We have used an indexing technique to speed up the matching process. In our experiment, we have used FVC2004 fingerprint data-set as input data and investigated the false non-match ratio and false matching ratio for DB2, DB3 and DB4 also.

Malayalam, a classical language in India, is spoken by over 40 million people. This paper proposes an effective information retrieval system for Malayalam, which retrieve Malayalam documents relevant to the user's information need. The proposed system improves effectiveness by considering synonyms and negations of the terms specified in the query. Though the evaluation of the system is performed over a small corpus, the results are promising. The proposed system is thus relevant for various natural language processing tasks in an highly agglutinative language like Malayalam. © 2013 IEEE.
