The paper introduces a new form of complex fractional order proportional integral derivative (CFOPID) controller of the form D. This latest derivative of has more parameters than any of the Fractional-order PID controller or conventional integer order controller. The paper demonstrates the tuning of this complex fractional order controller using Genetic Algorithm method of tuning. It further relates the results and responses got in the latter tuning method with interior point optimization tuning method (fmincon) of another research paper.

Matching disparate image pairs using shape-aware ConvNets

An end-to-end trainable ConvNet architecture, that learns to harness the power of shape representation for matching disparate image pairs, is proposed. Disparate image pairs are deemed those that exhibit strong affine variations in scale, viewpoint and projection parameters accompanied by the presence of partial or complete occlusion of objects and extreme variations in ambient illumination. Under these challenging conditions, neither local nor global feature-based image matching methods, when used in isolation, have been observed to be effective. The proposed correspondence determination scheme for matching disparate images exploits high-level shape cues that are derived from low-level local feature descriptors, thus combining the best of both worlds. A graph-based representation for the disparate image pair is generated by constructing an affinity matrix that embeds the distances between feature points in two images, thus modeling the correspondence determination problem as one of graph matching. The eigenspectrum of the affinity matrix, i.e., the learned global shape representation, is then used to further regress the transformation or homography that defines the correspondence between the source image and target image. The proposed scheme is shown to yield state-of-the-art results for both, coarse-level shape matching as well as fine point-wise correspondence determination. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. In a Gene Co-expression Network, the same or closely related genes are clustered into co-expressed groups. It is necessary to investigate the role that these genes play as far as some complex diseases like cancer are concerned in those networks. Ranking those genes actually discover the significant candidate genes for various types of cancers. There are several gene ranking algorithms proposed so far that produces the top ranked genes according to their importance with respect to a particular cancer disease. In this work, we apply multi-objective genetic algorithm, Multi-ObjectiveNetworkGA, on a gene coexpression network to find the top ranked cancer mediating genes. The algorithm is applied to publicly available real-life cancer datasets taken from NCBI (National Centre for Biotechnology Information) biological online repository. The performance of the algorithm is justified by classification using SVM classifier with linear kernel and it is compared with state-of-the-art methods on the basis of percentage of accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-Score.

Software vulnerabilities pose potential security threats to a software. Researchers have been working on the problem of scheduling vulnerabilities and their fixation to minimize the potential risk they present. Vulnerability prioritization is an important step in this direction. Current work in this area focusses on implicit properties of a vulnerability and does not take into account the relative importance and their degree of interdependence. These factors contribute effectively to the decision of vulnerability fixation. In this paper, we consider these factors and propose multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) techniques as a means of vulnerability prioritization. We have used three methods, namely normalized criteria distance (NCD), analytic hierarchy process (AHP), and decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) methodology for performing the task of vulnerability prioritization while treating different vulnerability types independent of each other in the first two approaches and showing interdependence in the third approach suggesting a cause–effect theory. We find the priorities of various vulnerability types using these three methods and suggest that the third approach is a more practical solution towards prioritization.

Deep spectral correspondence for matching disparate image pairs

A novel, non-learning-based, saliency-aware, shape-cognizant correspondence determination technique is proposed for matching image pairs that are significantly disparate in nature. Images in the real world often exhibit high degrees of variation in scale, orientation, viewpoint, illumination and affine projection parameters, and are often accompanied by the presence of textureless regions and complete or partial occlusion of scene objects. The above conditions confound most correspondence determination techniques by rendering impractical the use of global contour-based descriptors or local pixel-level features for establishing correspondence. The proposed deep spectral correspondence (DSC) determination scheme harnesses the representational power of local feature descriptors to derive a complex high-level global shape representation for matching disparate images. The proposed scheme reasons about correspondence between disparate images using high-level global shape cues derived from low-level local feature descriptors. Consequently, the proposed scheme enjoys the best of both worlds, i.e., a high degree of invariance to affine parameters such as scale, orientation, viewpoint, illumination afforded by the global shape cues and robustness to occlusion provided by the low-level feature descriptors. While the shape-based component within the proposed scheme infers what to look for, an additional saliency-based component dictates where to look at thereby tackling the noisy correspondences arising from the presence of textureless regions and complex backgrounds. In the proposed scheme, a joint image graph is constructed using distances computed between interest points in the appearance (i.e., image) space. Eigenspectral decomposition of the joint image graph allows for reasoning about shape similarity to be performed jointly, in the appearance space and eigenspace. Gender information using facial patterns serves an important use in various user interaction applications. This paper proposes an approach based on Convolutional Neural Networks to identify gender from faces. The network is trained using back-propagation and Adam optimization. Using convolution operations, performance of proposed CNN network is evaluated on publicly available CASIA face recognition dataset. The proposed network is able to process 640 × 480 pixel face images in a very less time. A combination of convolutional and max pooling layers is used and classification accuracy of 98.5 percent is achieved in just 50 epochs. The results on CASIA benchmark prove that a superior classification performance can be attained by using Convolutional Neural Networks for gender recognition. The accuracy attained is more than earlier methods used for face recognition.

This paper presents an effective design of a 2nd order infinite impulse response digital differentiator optimized using cuckoo search algorithm (CSA). In the proposed design scheme, sum of the coefficients of numerator terms was restricted to zero so as to approximate DC frequency response accurately. This restricted condition resulted in a much better approximation in terms of superior performance and reduction in number of variables to be optimized. Resulting integral absolute error, between the ideal and the designed magnitude frequency responses, considered as performance index, was found to be much better as compared to the other reported differentiators in the literature and therefore, it is concluded that the presented scheme is a potential method to design a 2nd order digital differentiator. © 2017 IEEE.

The emergence of elastic optical networks (EONs) has been viewed as a solution to the diverse bandwidth requests that will occur in the next generation's network applications and Internet which are anticipated to handle a traffic growth at a rate greater than Petabit per second level. However, the crunch in fiber capacity will persist owing to use of only two dimensions of multiplexing in the EONs. With the adoption of space division multiplexing (SDM), an extra freedom degree can be used such that the EONs will be able support the required capacity of the future diverse traffic. Further, with an increase in the rate(s) of transmission(s), to counter the network failures, there will occur the need for protection mechanisms, specifically those, which can protect routes and provision solutions which are end-to-end. In the current work, as an intial step for protecting an EON based on SDM, we design a strategy which (i) is independent of the failure(s), and (ii) protects the route(s). We evaluate our proposed strategy considering realistic assumptions, topologies and parameters, and for different traffic load values. The obtained simulation results reveal that (i) our proposed strategy is efficient in provisioning of protection which is pre-configured, and (ii) the considered network topology's node degree significantly affects both, the blocking and the evaluated route's length in the protected EON based on SDM.

Cloud infrastructures are being increasingly utilized in critical infrastructures such as banking/finance, transportation and utility management. Sophistication and resources used in recent security breaches including those on critical infrastructures show that attackers are no longer limited by monetary/computational constraints. In fact, they may be aided by entities with large financial and human resources. Hence there is urgent need to develop predictive approaches for cyber defense to strengthen cloud infrastructures specifically utilized by critical infrastructures. Extensive research has been done in the past on applying techniques such as Game Theory, Machine Learning and Bayesian Networks among others for the predictive defense of critical infrastructures. However a major drawback of these approaches is that they do not incorporate probabilistic human behavior which limits their predictive ability. In this paper, a stochastic approach is proposed to predict less secure states in critical cloud systems which might lead to potential security breaches. These less-secure states are deemed as 'risky' states in our approach. Markov Decision Process (MDP) is used to accurately incorporate user behavior(s) as well as operational behavior of the cloud infrastructure through a set of features. The developed reward/cost mechanism is then used to select appropriate 'actions' to identify risky states at future time steps by learning an optimal policy. Experimental results show that the proposed framework performs well in identifying future 'risky' states. Through this work we demonstrate the effectiveness of using probabilistic modeling (MDP) to predictively secure critical cloud infrastructures. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. All rights reserved.

New grounded immittance simulators employing a single CFCC

In this study, a number of new immittance simulators employing a single current follower current conveyor (CFCC) and three passive components are proposed. First, six new circuit configurations have been introduced which can simulate lossy immittances of different types using a single CFCC along with a canonical number of passive and active components. Subsequently, with a little modification in the hardware of the CFCC, three other new circuits have been introduced which can simulate a variety of lossless immittances without any component matching constraints or requirement of additional active elements. When the passive resistors are replaced with complementary metal - oxide - semiconductor (CMOS) voltage controlled resistors, electronic tunability of the simulated immittances is available in all the cases. Several application examples of some of the proposed simulated immittance circuits have been presented and their workability has been verified using PSPICE simulations based on CFCC implementable in 0.18 μm CMOS technology. © 2017 Institution of engineering and technology.
