Obstacle avoidance is an important task for autonomous navigation. The paper presents a simple vision based obstacle detection and avoidance algorithm for mobile robots. Using a monocular vision system, a depth map is created in which every pixel of the image captured by the robot is classified in one of the two categories- ground or obstacle. A virtual triangular obstacle is then created on the depth map. To avoid this obstacle, the robot is directed along its edge having the maximum magnitude of slope. A distinct feature of the proposed algorithm is that along with the position, it takes into account, how densely populated are the obstacles in the field of view and turns the robot in the direction offering less hindrance. The algorithm can be effectively deployed for situations involving environment exploration. The algorithm has been validated on a differential steering robot with an on-board camera, driven by a remote computer which guides the robot, based on the algorithm implemented in MATLAB®. The algorithm is tested under uniform indoor lighting conditions and avoids collision of obstacles in its path successfully. ©2010 IEEE.

The area of sensor network has a long history and many kind of sensor devices are used in various real life applications. Here, we introduce Wireless sensor network which when combine with other areas then plays an important role in analyzing the data of forest temperature, bioinformatics, water contamination, traffic control, telecommunication etc. Due to the advancement in the area of wireless sensor network and their ability to generate large amount of spatial/temporal data, always attract researchers for applying data mining techniques and getting interesting results. Wireless sensor networks in monitoring the environmental activities grows and this attract greater interest and challenge for finding out the patterns from large amount of spatial/temporal datasets. These datasets are generated by sensor nodes which are deployed in some tropical regions or from some wearable sensor nodes which are attached with wild animals in wild life centuries. Sensor networks generate continuous stream of data over time. So, Data mining techniques always plays a vital role for extracting the knowledge form large wireless sensor network data. In this paper, we present the detection of sensor data irregularities, Sensor data clustering, Pattern matching and their interesting results and with these results we can analyze the sensor node data in different ways. © 2010 IEEE.

This paper presents a novel technique of obtaining the Region of Interest (ROI) which is square-shaped. After palm print segmentation, we perform texture feature extraction using Local Binary Pattern (LBP) based on the directional gradient response. With the feature vectors so obtained we perform matching using Support vector machines (SVM) and also using the Chi-square distance measurement. The experimental results presented in this paper show significant improvement in the performance of the biometric system with a combination of LBP and SVM. ©2010 IEEE.

Security is essential in wireless sensor networks as they are being used in urban environments, life saving disaster management and rescue operations. Any serious attack at the routing layer can cause serious damages. Although a lot of security measures have been proposed for application and transport layer, we have found that there is not enough research geared towards securing the network at the routing layer. In this paper, we propose a novel solution for securing against external as well as internal attacks. The protocol maintains a working network by using redundant multiple paths despite attacks at one route. It also identifies and removes the malicious nodes from the system. Since the system is totally distributed and does not require a central server as required in some of the other protocols, there is no single point of failure. We also keep in mind the limited computing resources and network bandwidth of the wireless sensor nodes. Finally the paper quantifies the protocol's effectiveness against some of the existing secure routing protocols namely QDV and SNEP using simulation studies.

This paper proposes a Friend-based security scheme for efficient routing in mobile ad hoc networks. The idea behind this technique is the establishment of friend networks in the same way as the formation of friends in real life scenarios. The algorithm provides authentication of nodes by sending challenges and creating friend lists of nodes that complete the challenge. Friends are rated on the basis of the amount of data they transfer through themselves and according to the rating of other friends, which is obtained during the friend list sharing process. The data is finally routed through the route with the greatest number of trusted friends. One of the greatest advantages of this technique is that the nodes do not need to work in the promiscuous mode. The information about the malicious nodes is gathered effectively by using challenges. This reduces the overhead on the network significantly. Through various simulation experiments it has been found that the proposed algorithm works very efficiently in terms of detecting the malicious nodes and also allowing lesser number of packets to be routed through these detected malicious nodes.

Document Quality Analysis is one of the most prominent areas of interest these days. It is used for managing of huge number of documents, detection of fraud document, recognizing identity documents etc. A lot of work has been done in the areas of coloured photograph recognition, improving the quality of documents and printing technology. However, to the best of our knowledge no work has been done to recognize the dot matrix prints from other high quality prints using principle component analysis. This is useful for automatically recognizing the text on a certain print. Post the detection of the quality of the print, recognition of the text can be easily done using specific algorithm for each quality. In this paper, the above objective is achieved by applying principle component analysis before and after smearing of the text on a particular print and then classifying it into dot matrix or non-dot matrix print. Moreover, this approach has also been compared with prior works related to classification and detection of print quality.

In recent years video-on-demand has emerged as one of the potential applications of multimedia. Among all multimedia applications, videos require the largest amount of bandwidth. Being a scarce resource, bandwidth utilization in efficient and feasible way always have been the main concern in video broadcasting schemes. In request based scheme, a unicast channel is initiated on the arrival of a request in an inter-arrival time of two adjacent multicast channels. If several requests arrive in a very short duration then each of them initiates a separate unicast channel, requiring large number of unicast channels. However, all these requests are fetching almost same video data. In proposed algorithm, we cluster all incoming requests in a short time span and serve them by a single unicast channel. The spanning duration is determined by the threshold of user's tolerable waiting time. In our adaptive channel allocation algorithm, we took a waiting time of at most one minute for users and found that for popular videos with arrival rate more than 5.5 per minute, a saving of around 90% in bandwidth can be obtained. For less popular videos bandwidth saving is> 40%. The proposed scheme can precisely predict the waiting time for any user in case of unavailability of unicast channels, while there is no such mechanism in the request based scheme. Further, all the channels in the work are only unicast channels.

The continuing explosive growth of textual content within the World Wide Web has given rise to the need for sophisticated Text Classification (TC) techniques that combine efficiency with high quality of results. E-mail filtering is one application that has the potential to affect every user of the internet. Even though a large body of research has delved into this problem, there is a paucity of survey that indicates trends and directions. This paper attempts to categorize the prevalent popular techniques for classifying email as spam or legitimate and suggest possible techniques to fill in the lacunae. Our findings suggest that context-based email filtering has the most potential in improving quality by learning various contexts such as n-gram phrases, linguistic constructs or users' profile based context to tailor his/her filtering scheme.
