A generic approach to engineering transformational methods

In general transformations across models need to be defined for every different pair of models for engineering transformational methods. In this paper we formulate a systematic, computer supported generic technique of performing transformation across models. We formalize the transformation technique by using the graph theoretic notion of isomorphism. Model concepts are organized in an is built of method graph. The generation technique is used to establish isomorphism between the concepts of the two graphs by generating nodes and edges by duplication. This technique produces feasible mappings, which can be presented to the method engineer for subsequent fine-tuning. Further, these model mappings are used to generate the purposes and dependencies for a decisional Meta model for a transformational method.

A novel group-theoretic method is presented for denoising a three-dimensional scene in isotropic noise. Images of the scene at varying depths are regarded as reference stochastic processes on the unit sphere to formulate Weiner-Hopf equations for estimating the image at any given depth. These comprise a set of coupled linear integral equations on the unit sphere and are solved using Peter-Weyl theory of Fourier transform on the rotation group. The computational complexity of this algorithm is reduced using bi-invariance of the image correlations with respect to the stabilizer subgroup of the rotation group.

Frequency is an important parameter in power system monitoring, control and protection. This paper shows how a combination of neural networks and genetic algorithm can be used to estimate power system frequency. Neural networks on the other hand offer great advantages in learning, adaptation, fault tolerance and parallelism. Genetic algorithm is a parallel global search technique that emulates natural genetic operators. In the proposed algorithm learning of weights of neural networks is done using genetic algorithm. The results obtained by simulation show better performance of the proposed control structure when compared with traditional error back propagation and least mean square algorithm. The performance of the algorithm is studied through simulations at different situations of power system.

Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks (MANETS) are characterized by random, multi-hop topologies that do not have a centralized coordinating entity or a fixed infrastructure that may change rapidly over time. In addition, mobile nodes operate with portable and finite power sources. In this work, we propose an energy-efficient metric for MANETs to minimize energy consumption and increase the networkpsilas consistency. Earlier works mainly focused on the shortest path method to minimize energy, which might result into network failure because some nodes might exhaust fast as they are used repetitively, while some other nodes might not be used at all. This can lead to energy imbalance and to network life reduction. We propose an Energy Efficient Ad-Hoc On-Demand Routing (EEAODR) algorithm that balances energy load among nodes so that a minimum energy level is maintained among nodes and the network life is increased. We focused on increasing the network longevity by distributing energy consumption in the network. We also compared the simulation results with a popular previously proposed on-demand routing protocol in this area, AODV, to show the usefulness of our algorithm.

In wireless sensor networks (WSNs), message security is an important concern. The protection of integrity and confidentiality of information and the protection from unauthorized access are important issues. However, due to factors such as resource limitations, absence of centralized access points, open wireless medium and small size of the sensor nodes, the implementation of security in WSNs is a challenging task. In this paper, we propose a protocol, quality-based distance vector routing (QDV), for securing WSNs using concepts based on ant colony optimization (ACO). Two fundamental parameters: quality-of-service (QoS) and reputation are used. The high value of reputation of a node signifies that the node is trusted and is more reliable for data communication purposes. As a node shows signs of misbehavior, its reputation decreases, which, in turn, affect its quality-of-security (QSec), thereby disabling the malicious nodes from gaining access to the network. By incorporating these two factors, we are able to distinguish the nodes present in the network. We, then, present a method to achieve "equilibrium" where the node is able to guarantee that its neighbors are secure.

Kohonen self organizing map is an important artificial neural network technique that uses competitive, unsupervised learning to produce a low-dimensional discretized representation of the input space of the training samples which preserves the topological properties of the input space. The fuzzy set theory introduces the concept of membership function to the learning process of Self Organizing Map which helps to handle the inherent vagueness involved in most of the real life problems. In this paper, fuzzy self organizing map with one dimensional neighborhood is used to find an optimal solution for the symmetrical Traveling Salesperson Problem. The solution generated by the Fuzzy Self Organizing Map algorithm is improved by the 2opt algorithm. Finally, the Fuzzy Self Organizing Map algorithm is compared with Lin-Kerninghan Algorithm and Evolutionary Algorithm with Enhanced Edge Recombination operator and self-adapting mutation rate.

The biclustering method is a very useful tool for analyzing gene expression data when some genes have multiple functions and experimental conditions are diverse in gene expression measurement. It focuses on finding a subset of genes and a subset of experimental conditions that together exhibit coherent behavior. A large number of biclustering algorithms has been developed for analyzing gene expression data. Most of them find exclusive biclusters, which is inappropriate in the biological context. Since biological processes are not independent of each other, many genes participate in multiple different processes. Hence, nonexclusive biclustering algorithms are required for finding highly overlapping biclusters. In this regard, a novel overlapping biclustering algorithm is presented here to find overlapping biclusters of larger volume with mean squared residue lower than a given threshold. The proposed method consists of two phases. First, a set of highly coherent seeds is generated based on two-way k-medoids algorithm, where mutual information is used as a similarity measure instead of using Euclidean distance. The seeds are then iteratively adjusted (enlarged or degenerated) by adding or removing genes and conditions based on a new quantitative index. In effect, the proposed method provides highly overlapping coherent biclusters with mean squared residue lower than a given threshold. Some quantitative indices are introduced for evaluating the quality of generated biclusters. The quality of biclusters found by the proposed approach is discussed and the results are compared to those reported by existing methods. In general, the proposed approach shows an excellent performance at finding patterns in gene expression data.

In the present work an artificial neural network (ANN) based speed controller and speed estimator of PMSM (Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor) drive is designed and simulated using SIMULINK under MATLAB and results are compared with conventional PI controller and observer based drive of PMSM. The performance of ANN based system is evaluated for various disturbances to substantiate the proposed control and estimation of the speed.

This paper deals with different control strategies for DSTATCOM (Distribution Static Compensator) for power quality improvement for a three-phase, three-wire distribution system. A three-leg voltage source inverter (VSI) configuration with a dc bus capacitor is employed as DSTATCOM. The hysteresis as well as PWM current controllers are designed, analyzed and compared for PI controller and sliding mode controller. The capability of the DSTATCOM is demonstrated through results obtained using MATLAB and Simulink based developed model of the DSTATCOM system. The performance of the DSTATCOM acting as a shunt compensator is found satisfactory under varied load perturbations.

Co-operative task execution amongst multiple agents is an important field for research today. In this paper we study a system for surveillance in an open environment using multiple sensor-enabled robots. These robots can detect and track a target using their sensors. Robots/Agents can also communicate amongst each other to coordinate in task execution. Agents maintain lists of (a) targets within their field of view (active list) and (b) targets in the field of view of their neighboring agents(reference list). Agents synchronize and update their lists on a periodic basis with each other using a shared communication channel. Back-off algorithm has been employed to prevent two agents transmitting information at the same time. Agents can also generate beacon requests to request help from other idle robots when they detect a new target that they are unable to track because of being currently assigned to track another target . Simulations have been carried out in Breve-3d, a tool for modeling multi agent systems. After modeling the robot, targets and the communication network in Breve, simulation runs were made to determine the effectiveness of tracking. Experimental results and inferences have been included. Experimental results indicate effective tracking of targets due to frequent synchronization and updating of active and reference lists. ©2007 IEEE.
