Face recognition (FR) technology has numerous applications in artificial intelligence including biometrics, security,authentication, law enforcement, and surveillance. Deep learning (DL) models, notably convolutional neuralnetworks (CNNs), have shown promising results in the field of FR. However CNNs are easily fooled since theydo not encode position and orientation correlations between features. Hinton et al. envisioned Capsule Networksas a more robust design capable of retaining pose information and spatial correlations to recognize objects morelike the brain does. Lower-level capsules hold 8-dimensional vectors of attributes like position, hue, texture, andso on, which are routed to higher-level capsules via a new routing by agreement algorithm. This provides capsulenetworks with viewpoint invariance, which has previously evaded CNNs. This research presents a FR model basedon capsule networks that was tested using the LFW dataset, COMSATS face dataset, and own acquired photos usingcameras measuring 128 × 128 pixels, 40 × 40 pixels, and 30 × 30 pixels. The trained model outperforms state-ofthe-art algorithms, achieving 95.82% test accuracy and performing well on unseen faces that have been blurred orrotated. Additionally, the suggested model outperformed the recently released approaches on the COMSATS facedataset, achieving a high accuracy of 92.47%. Based on the results of this research as well as previous results, capsulenetworks perform better than deeper CNNs on unobserved altered data because of their special equivarianceproperties.

Vehicular ad hoc networks(VANETs)provide intelligent navigation and efficient route management,resulting in time savings and cost reductions in the transportation ***,the exchange of beacons and messages over public channels among vehicles and roadside units renders these networks vulnerable to numerous attacks and privacy *** address these challenges,several privacy and security preservation protocols based on blockchain and public key cryptography have been proposed ***,most of these schemes are limited by a long execution time and massive communication costs,which make them inefficient for on-board units(OBUs).Additionally,some of them are still susceptible to many *** such,this study presents a novel protocol based on the fusion of elliptic curve cryptography(ECC)and bilinear pairing(BP)*** formal security analysis is accomplished using the Burrows–Abadi–Needham(BAN)logic,demonstrating that our scheme is verifiably *** proposed scheme’s informal security assessment also shows that it provides salient security features,such as non-repudiation,anonymity,and ***,the scheme is shown to be resilient against attacks,such as packet replays,forgeries,message falsifications,and *** the performance perspective,this protocol yields a 37.88%reduction in communication overheads and a 44.44%improvement in the supported security ***,the proposed scheme can be deployed in VANETs to provide robust security at low overheads.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on human society. It has highlighted the need for faster diagnostic methods. Research has shown that combining semantic segmentation with traditional medical approaches can significantly accelerate the process. To address this, leveraging COVID-19 CT images, our team designs a revolutionary semantic segmentation model called Level of Detail Enhancement U-Net (LDE-UNet), which shows the lesion area on CT images. By introducing the LDE block, the model has the unique advantage of overcoming the loss of data details during the downsampling process by emphasizing and transmitting details at the same level. Our SOTA model outperforms the second-best model by at least 0.7% in the most critical indicator precision. Compared with other models, LDE-UNet's strong reliability determines its ability to be used in the medical field to accelerate the localization and division of lesion areas on CT images by professional doctors, thus completing patient diagnosis faster. In addition, we also propose a standardized method for processing medical images. © 2023 IEEE.

Fair clustering problems have been paid lots of attention recently. In this paper, we study the k-Center problem under the group fairness and data summarization fairness constraints, denoted as Group Fair k-Center (GFkC) and Data Summarization Fair k-Center (DSFkC), respectively, in the massively parallel computational (MPC) distributed model. The previous best results for the above two problems in the MPC model are a 9-approximation with violation 7 (WWW 2022) and a (17 + ∊)-approximation without fairness violation (ICML 2020), respectively. In this paper, we obtain a (3 + ∊)- approximation with violation 1 for the GFkC problem in the MPC model, which is almost as accurate as the best known approximation ratio 3 with violation 1 for the sequential algorithm of the GFkC problem. Moreover, for the DSFkC problem in the MPC model, we obtain a (4 + ∊)-approximation without fairness violation, which is very close to the best known approximation ratio 3 for the sequential algorithm of the DSFkC problem. Empirical experiments show that our distributed algorithms perform better than existing state-of-the-art distributed methods for the above two problems. © 2024 International Foundation for Autonomous Agents and Multiagent systems.

With the prevalence of pre-training-fine-tuning paradigm, how to efficiently adapt the pre-trained model to the downstream tasks has been an intriguing issue. Parameter-Efficient Fine-Tuning (PEFT) methods have been proposed for low-cost adaptation. Although PEFT has demonstrated effectiveness and been widely applied, the underlying principles are still unclear. In this paper, we adopt the PAC-Bayesian generalization error bound, viewing pre-training as a shift of prior distribution which leads to a tighter bound for generalization error. We validate this shift from the perspectives of oscillations in the loss landscape and the quasi-sparsity in gradient distribution. Based on this, we propose a gradient-based sparse finetuning algorithm, named Sparse Increment Fine-Tuning (SIFT), and validate its effectiveness on a range of tasks including the GLUE Benchmark and Instruction-tuning. Reinforcement learning(RL) has roots in dynamic programming and it is called adaptive/approximate dynamic programming(ADP) within the control community. This paper reviews recent developments in ADP along with RL and its applications to various advanced control fields. First, the background of the development of ADP is described, emphasizing the significance of regulation and tracking control problems. Some effective offline and online algorithms for ADP/adaptive critic control are displayed, where the main results towards discrete-time systems and continuous-time systems are surveyed, ***, the research progress on adaptive critic control based on the event-triggered framework and under uncertain environment is discussed, respectively, where event-based design, robust stabilization, and game design are reviewed. Moreover, the extensions of ADP for addressing control problems under complex environment attract enormous attention. The ADP architecture is revisited under the perspective of data-driven and RL frameworks,showing how they promote ADP formulation ***, several typical control applications with respect to RL and ADP are summarized, particularly in the fields of wastewater treatment processes and power systems, followed by some general prospects for future research. Overall, the comprehensive survey on ADP and RL for advanced control applications has d emonstrated its remarkable potential within the artificial intelligence era. In addition, it also plays a vital role in promoting environmental protection and industrial intelligence.

Cell-free massive MIMO network is a promising solution to support 5G communication. However, as an ultra-dense network (UDN), it suffers from two major issues: power consumption and scalability, which hinders it to be widely used in practice. The increasing and time-varying user demand, the dynamic propagation environment, and the huge amount of access points (APs) make it a challenging task to address these issues. For this purpose, we propose a distributed solution to solve the access point activation (APA) problem in cell-free massive MIMO networks to reduce power consumption considering dynamic user demand. We leverage the user-centric characteristic and design a multi-agent deep reinforcement learning (MADRL) algorithm by which each AP independently decides whether it needs to be switched on or off. The simulation results show that the MADRL outperforms the centralized and the random strategies. This research demonstrates the ability of distributed learning in solving the APA problem in cell-free massive MIMO networks. © 2023 IEEE.

Amid the urgency to decarbonize power systems, while mitigating extreme weather events, capacity expansion models can play a vital role in reliably planning the expansion of power systems and facilitating the integration of renewable energy (RE) sources. Optimizing capacity expansion generally involves selecting surrogate representative days from forecasts of load and the generation profiles of variable RE resources. To properly select those representative days, we propose a novel input-based clustering approach that utilizes three unique operational characteristics: load shedding, renewable curtailment, and transmission congestion. The proposed method allows for more robust and cost-effective capacity planning. The method is validated using a capacity expansion model and a production cost model aligned with California Independent system Operator (CAISO)'s decarbonization goals, and results in significant cost reduction and substantial decreases in load shedding. © 2024 IEEE.

User-generated content is daily produced in social media, as such user interest summarization is critical to distill salient information from massive information. While the interested messages (e.g., tags or posts) from a single user are usually sparse becoming a bottleneck for existing methods, we propose a topic-aware graph-based neural interest summarization method (UGraphNet), enhancing user semantic mining by unearthing potential user relations and jointly learning the latent topic representations of posts that facilitates user interest learning. Experiments on two datasets collected from well-known social media platforms demonstrate the superior performance of our model in the tasks of user interest summarization and item recommendation. Further discussions also show that exploiting the latent topic representations and user relations are conductive to the user automatic language understanding. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Estimation of wood moisture content (MC) is a fundamental aspect of woodworking, construction, and various other industries that rely on the versatile properties of wood. In this paper, we present mmMC, a novel system that estimates the MC of wood by a single commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) mmWave radar, which provides accurate end-to-end real-time wood moisture measurement results while being non-invasive, portable, and flexible in deployment. The proposed system uses a novel target reflection feature (TRF) to determine the reflectivity of the wood, thereby correlating it with specific MC levels. To robustly and accurately estimate the TRF of the wood from the mmWave signal, a signal processing pipeline is proposed. Specifically, an object detection and signal extraction module is designed to resolve the range of the object and eliminate multipath effects of the original signal. Then, a multiple chirps/antennas signals processing module is proposed to obtain a stable TRF from the extracted signals by using signals from different antennas and chirps. The TRF is associated with the MC of wood by a regression to enable real-time MC estimation. Through extensive real-world experiments, we have demonstrated that the proposed system has high accuracy and reliability. © 2024 IEEE.
