In multicore environment, using multiple threads is a common useful approach to improve application performance. Nevertheless, even in many simple applications, the performance might degrade when the number of threads increases. Users usually impute this phenomenon to the overhead of creation or termination of threads. However, in our observation, the more significant effect is the dispatching of threads. We discuss the problems on using threads, and present a novel User Dispatching Mechanism (UDispatch) that provides controllability in user space to improve application performance. Since user threads cannot directly control system resources, a virtual device is adopted between user space and operating system for portability and efficiency instead of adding new system calls through kernel modification. We also experiment UDispatch through multi-threading multimedia applications. The results show that a skip-line application speeds up to 111.3% and 111.6% on a 4-core machine and an 8-core machine, respectively, and an optimized H.264/AVC decoder speeds up to 18.4% on a 4-core machine. © 2009 IEEE.

Image registration is widely used in 3D modeling. In this paper, an approach for multiview image registration based on augmented Kalman filter is proposed. The position and orientation of viewpoint are considered as augmented system state vector. A simplified system state and two system models are constructed. The system state is augmented and updated recursively. The position and orientation of each viewpoint is estimated. The proposed multiview image registration method can handle the uncertainty efficiently and the registration result is globally consistent. Some experimental results are provided to validate the performance of the proposed method. ©2009 IEEE.

Sustaining open innovation requires better understanding how collaborative efforts of contributors yield collective creativity. One of the significant problems in understanding emergence of collective creativity involves how collectives govern and coordinate the actions of individuals to maximize innovation output. Yet, relatively little is known about desirable organizing processes in open innovation communities. To this end, we examine the impact of governance mechanisms and conflict management styles on collective creativity in open source socioecologies. systems model of creativity and proxy metrics for measuring potential for collective creativity are utilized to conduct a simulation study of Open Source software socio-ecologies. Findings suggest that decentralized coordination schemes such as emergent selection that are observed in utility communities along with moderate degrees of assertiveness and cooperation for conflict management result in higher incidence of innovation © 2009 IEEE.

Applying SRGMs (software Reliability Growth Models) to real projects is a major concern in software reliability. Sometimes, it is hard to decide the best model for a specific project. Researchers have made a first step on solving this problem by combination, but the effect was limited in accuracy and adaptability. Aiming to improve the usability of the SRGMs, we propose a neural network based combination method to build accurate and adaptive SNN (Selective Neural Network) model. It avoids relying on a single model, thus reduces the risk to produce inaccurate predictions and improves the average performance in accuracy. Neural network and multi-criteria model selection strategy enable the SNN model to be adapted to various projects, producing accurate predictions. Experiment results show that the SNN model makes a notable improvement in accuracy compared with its component models and other combinational models do. ©2009 IEEE.

Cloud computing aims to power the next generation data centers and enables application service providers to lease data center capabilities for deploying applications depending on user QoS (Quality of Service) requirements. Cloud applications have different composition, configuration, and deployment requirements. Quantifying the performance of resource allocation policies and application scheduling algorithms at finer details in Cloud computing environments for different application and service models under varying load, energy performance (power consumption, heat dissipation), and system size is a challenging problem to tackle. To simplify this process, in this paper we propose CloudSim: an extensible simulation toolkit that enables modelling and simulation of Cloud computing environments. The CloudSim toolkit supports modelling and creation of one or more virtual machines (VMs) on a simulated node of a Data Center, jobs, and their mapping to suitable VMs. It also allows simulation of multiple Data Centers to enable a study on federation and associated policies for migration of VMs for reliability and automatic scaling of applications. Cloud computing delivers infrastructure, platform, and software as services, which are made available as subscription-based services in a pay-as-you-go model to consumers. These services in industry are respectively referred to as Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), and software as a Service (SaaS). The importance of these services is highlighted in a recent report from Berkeley as: "Cloud computing, the long-held dream of computing as a utility, has the potential to transform a large part of the IT industry, making software even more attractive as a service" [11]. Distributed system emulators provide a paramount platform for testing of network protocols and distributed applications in clusters and networks of workstations. However, to allow testers to benefit from these systems, it is necessary an efficient and automatic mapping of hundreds, or even thousands, of virtual nodes to physical hosts-and the mapping of the virtual links between guests to physical paths in the physical environment. In this paper we present a heuristic to map both virtual machines to hosts and virtual links between virtual machines to paths in the real system. We define the problem we are addressing, present the solution for it and evaluate it in different usage scenarios. © 2009 IEEE.

In a service-oriented architecture, how to analyze the feasibility of service composition according to the requirements of service consumers has become a problem that must be solved in service composition. A method for analyzing feasibility of requirement driven service composition is proposed. Based on the support function at different stages in the lifecycle of service composition, the composition process is divided into a number of independent function modules, colored Petri nets are used to model for them, meanwhile the QoS properties of services such as price and success probability are considered, the task failure and processing strategies are characterized. Based on this, combining with the requirements of service consumer, the definition of feasibility and a service schedulability strategy are advanced. ASK-CTL is introduced to describe and verify basic properties of model, and the corresponding analysis algorithm is also given. What's more, at the end of this paper, an example was given to simulate analysis process by using CPN Tools. © 2009 IEEE.

Service composition and related technologies have provided favorable means for building complex Web software systems. It may span multiple organizational units requires particular considerations on trustworthy issues. However, the distributive and heterogeneous characteristics of services make it hard to guarantee trustworthiness of service composition. This paper presents a method for analyzing dynamic trustworthy service composition according to the characteristics and requirements of service composition. Petri nets are used to precisely describe the composition process in order to describe the logic relation between different components. Based on this, the concept of trust matrix is given to represent the relationships between states. A trustworthy service composition strategy and its enforcement method are proposed. A case study of Travel Service demonstrates the feasibility of proposed method. © 2009 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
