A critical juncture in the undergraduate STEM education pathway is the first two years of college when the majority of attrition occurs because students experience many academic challenges in gatekeeping courses. Among many factors to this failure, an important one is attributed to the lack of engaging pedagogy inside and outside classrooms. Through this NSF WIDER program sponsored planning project, a team of faculty and administrators at Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University (AAMU) are implementing evidence-based instructional practices in foundation courses in STEM curricula. Recognizing that it is essential to implement effective pedagogy in gateway courses where most attrition occurs, this project has conducted a pilot study, which focuses on: (1) collecting baseline data about the extent to which evidence-based practices are currently being used in STEM gateway courses;(2) redesigning three foundational gateway courses in electrical engineering, computer science and mathematics by applying evidence-based teaching strategies-student-centered problem-based teaching(SC-PBT), example-based teaching, and just-in-time teaching (JITT);(3) incorporating classroom and laboratory activities that require active student engagement, conceptual understanding, critical thinking, and problem-solving;and (4) Employing model students to lead Supplementary Instruction (SI) courses with evidence-based peer-to-peer learning strategies. The student assessment data indicated the effectiveness of the evidence-based instructional practices, the SI peer-to-peer learning strategies, as well as existing engagement challenges. In addition, positive feedback was obtained from the student survey data on the redesigned courses. The broader impact of this project is twofold. Heterostructures like InAs/GaSb superlattices (SLs) are distinctly different from well-studied ones like GaAs/AlAs SLs in terms of band alignment, common interface atom, and phonon spectrum overlapping of the constituents, which manifests as stark differences in their electronic and vibrational properties. This paper reports a comprehensive examination of all four types of phonon modes (confined, quasiconfined, extended, and interface) that have long been predicted for the InAs/GaSb SL, with the observation and interpretation of a set of phonon modes by performing cleaved edge μ-Raman study with polarization analysis. Furthermore, we show a signature of symmetry reduction from D2d for GaAs/AlAs SL to C2v for InAs/GaSb SL revealed as a phonon-polariton effect.

Rain attenuation statistics for an average year in Nonthaburi, Thailand, in 2013-2014, are presented. Particularly, two statistics were calculated from the raw and preprocessed power-level data of the Ku-band beacon signal received at the Thaicom earth station. These statistics were compared with the ITU-R prediction models in 1999 and 2007-2013. The results show that preprocessing is necessary to generate the statistics and the ITU-R prediction models are not very accurate; the ITU-R models generally tend to underestimate the rain attenuation statistics. Specifically, these models underestimate by more than 4 dB when the availability is more than 99.9%.

The particular solutions(PS) and fundamental solutions(FS) in polar coordinates can be found in many textbooks, but with much less coverage in elliptic coordinates [1]. Since the elliptic domains with elliptic holes may be found in some engineering problems, the PS and the FS expansions in elliptic coordinates are essential for numerical computations. For Dirichlet problems of Laplace's equation in elliptic domains, the null field method(NFM), the interior field method(IFM) and the collocation Trefftz method(CTM) are reported in [2]. There seems to exist very few reports for mixed problems, where the Dirichlet and Neumann conditions are assigned on the exterior and the interior boundaries, simultaneously. This paper is devoted to such mixed problems by the NFM and the IFM, and the explicit algebraic equations are derived for elliptic domains. Besides, other effective particular solutions(PS) are sought, and the collocation Trefftz method(CTM) [3] is employed. The CTM may be used for Robin problems in elliptic domains. The effective algorithms for the mixed problems of Laplace's equation on elliptic domains are the main goal of this paper.

Customer service improvement is directly related with organizational standards and productivity. Employees activities have certain objectives to be followed but sometimes outcomes are different than expected. Human error while performing regular job activities cause sufficient losses and difficult to address. Management faces real challenges while dealing with employee related issues and sometimes becomes unproductive. We propose Brahms Model with multi layered alert filtration and feedback cycle which would address the human error in the system and generate the filtered alerts in the form of sms or by emails. This is especially useful for Human-computer Interfacing (HCI) Scenarios. Controlling human error and addressing real issues may protect any institution from severe damage and losses. Efficiency of a customer service department can be improved and maximized by multi-layered alert filtration system using Brahms Model.

Quick Response (QR) codes, used in marketing, warehouse management, product tracking, and other applications, are usually only comprised of visible black and white modules. The goal of this research is the creation of covert, color QR codes for increased data capacity, and security. This goal was met by layering QR codes, each of a unique color, printing the covert versions of the color QR codes, upconverting the covert codes into visible codes and unlayering them to take advantage of the various color channels present. It was shown that color layering of the QR codes effectively increased the data capacity by three times that of a traditional QR code, while the covert nature of the code provides added security. Finally, it was also demonstrated that a layered QR code with six base colors (using color intensity variations) could further increase QR code data capacity. © 2015 Taylor and Francis.

Heart auscultation is a screening method done by listening using a stethoscope for early diagnosis of heart disease, it is low cost and non-invasive, but it has a limitation of human hearing. This paper presents a noise-robust feature extraction method by combining and selecting a heart sound (HS) feature in time and frequency domain. Wavelet decomposition (WD) is used for noise removal. Features are extracted by AR-PSD and used as inputs for classification. The nine types of abnormal HS that were taken from Michigan Heart Sound Database were classified into nine categories. In this research, statistics features in time and frequency domain are used as additional features. Correlation-based Feature Selection (CFS) is used to select the best feature among 13 features extracted. The performance of a new feature set is called Feature Set 3 compared to CFS. The result shows that the proposed feature set achieves the highest level of accuracy.

The synthesis reaction used in esterification needs high energy consumption and a precise processing time to get the best yield of target. In this study, a model was formulated to optimize glycerol esterification process by minimizing the time needed for the process and maximizing the yield of Mono-glycerides. This optimization has gained importance for boosting the esterification industry and improving the production efficiency. Optimization through adaptive monitoring and control has provided significant advances in the process efficiency, a lower energy consumption and a better product quality. This paper presents the optimization with a computational algorithm in real time and adaptive control (RTAC), as compared to the conventional (traditional) methods to monitor and control of glycerol esterification processes. The identification of esterification status based on temperature and time are evaluated to strengthen the optimization. An adaptive method as feature selection to select wavelength IR sensors at specified intervals was carried out with Relief algorithm and Adaptive Pillar K-means clustering method to set the parameter control was proposed in this paper. Many combinations were evaluated from real time condition process, to achieve the best optimization results. The experimental results demonstrate that real time adaptive control can be achieved by using three clusters, which are heating up, stabilizing and finishing. In RTAC, each cluster has its own parameter to set the control point by the servo motor that was attached to magnetic stirrer-heater. By using optimization parameter for each cluster, esterification process time can be shortened by 15-20 minutes with a higher yield (7% or more), lower range stirrer rotation (300rpm-450 rpm) and a lower final temperature of 200℃ - 210℃.
