Measurement of capacitance and electrical potential of plural points for estimation of permittivity distribution

Recently, a method for estimating permittivity distributions was reported. The method combined a numerical technique (Finite Element Method) with Genetic Algorithm (GA). However, methods for estimating the distribution of permittivity have not yet been established. The purpose of this study is to obtain experimental data in order to improve the estimation method. We measured capacitance and electrical potential of plural points when an acrylic rod is placed in various positions within a measurement system. © 2013 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.

Identification of analysis classes is a critical design decision to be made early in the design phase in software development. Although incorrect identification of analysis classes can diminish the quality of a whole software design, it still heavily relies on the expertise and experience of the developer and has been ad-hoc. The majority existing works on identification of analysis classes focus on the rule-based approaches. However, the rule-based approaches which are used for analyzing sentence structures cannot be adopted for the language, which has very flexible word order like Korean. In this paper, we proposed a statistical learning method for identification of analysis classes from requirements sentences in Korean. The approach is evaluated using the precision and recall of the automatically extracted candidate classes from real requirements sentences in Korean. The result shows that we can promise numerically measurable enhancement of performance on solving the automatic identification problem of analysis classes using statistical methods, in the real use case specifications of a banking system.

Application code and processor parallelization, together with instruction set customization, are the most common and effective ways to enhance the performance and efficiency of application-specific processors (ASIPs). Both the effective code parallelization and data/task parallelism exploitation, as well as effective instruction set customization, enable an ASIP to achieve a significant performance improvement using limited extra hardware resources. However, a naive parallelization or instruction set customization may not result in the required performance improvement, leading to a waste of computing and energy resources. Therefore, when performing parallelization or custom instruction selection, complex tradeoffs between processing speed, circuit area and power consumption must be closely observed. In this paper, we propose and discuss an efficient ASIP-based Multi-Processor System-on-a-Chip (MPSoC) design for ray-tracing, exploiting application parallelism and hardware replication-aware instruction set customization. Without hardware sharing among the custom instructions units, the proposed parallel ray-tracer MPSoC design with custom instructions achieves 77% speed up in comparison to a single microprocessor design with the default instruction set. However, with the replication-aware instruction set customization, the speed up increases to 81%. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2013.

This paper presents a topology based on the interconnection of single-phase H-bridge converters and a three-phase converter acting as a shunt active power filter. Contributions for the model, PWM approach and control strategies are presented to the studied converter. As compared to the conventional solution by using just H-bridges converters, the proposed one reduces the number of semiconductor and storage devices while keeping the same characteristics of high number of levels. A comprehensive THD analysis will be considered followed by simulated and experimental outcomes. © 2013 IEEE.

Poultry scientists and researchers have been studying the possibility of identifying bird stress from the vocal patterns of broiler flocks. Being able to identify stress or sickness in a flock can lead to early interventions. However, as the flock ages, the vocal properties change. This paper presents the preliminary results of an age classification technique using the C4.5 decision three algorithm using Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCCs), audio frequencies commonly used from speech processing. Sound data was collected continuously over a 61-day period. The flock was composed of 400 Cobb500™ broilers raised under research conditions mimicking commercial operations. Results of the data processing and the C4.5 classification indicate that age can be determined within one day of error with 70% frequency. This process of determining age of a flock is intended to be the first step in a larger comprehensive system for identifying the condition of the flock and assessing animal welfare.

In this study, we precisely investigate the charge distribution in SiN layer by dynamic programming of channel hot hole induced hot electron injection (CHHIHE) in p-channel silicon-oxide-nitride-oxide-silicon (SONOS) memory device. In the dynamic programming scheme, gate voltage is increased as a staircase with fixed step amplitude, which can prohibits the injection of holes in SiN layer. Three-dimensional device simulation is calibrated and is compared with the measured programming characteristics. It is found, for the first time, that the hot electron injection point quickly traverses from drain to source side synchronizing to the expansion of charged area in SiN layer. As a result, the injected charges quickly spread over on the almost whole channel area uniformly during a short programming period, which will afford large tolerance against lateral trapped charge diffusion by baking. © 2013 The Japan Society of Applied Physics.

This paper introduces a system that can effectively save home energy by applying a small embedded system through remote control. We used a wireless router based on OpenWrt for the platform to develop an embedded system and a smart phone for the remote LED light control. The system was implemented by connecting a wireless router with an OS of OpenWrt installed and an interface board with an LED attached. The smart phone, which was the remote control device, was implemented by TCP/IP programming. The operation of the remote control system was verified by socket communication between the smart phone and the wireless router, and by USB communication between the wireless router and the interface board. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media.
