Cell selection in current LTE-Advanced depend on reference signal received power or reference signal received quality which results to low user association probability. Therefore, we propose an aggregate objective cell selection technique based on enhanced inter-cell interference coordination technique developed by 3GPP in Rel-10 known as almost blank subframe. We also adopt the use of cell range expansion technique as means to encourage offloading. Cell range expansion was introduced in LTE-advanced, it encourages user equipment to select a small cell with a weakest signal as thier serving cell by adding a positive bias in cell selection process. Simulation shows that the proposed scheme results to high user association probability, while giving superior performance in average throughput compared to conventional single objective base cell selection for cell range expansion.

SWEET routing protocol is one of the many protocols developed for cluster formation and routing in wireless sensor networks. The SWEET protocol is a decentralized clustering protocol, it uses timers and interim updated cluster head estimation probability. This paper focus on the details of the initialization waiting time, sleeping mode and base station in order to increase the life cycle of the network. The initial waiting time's resizing procedure is carried by a weighting factor which is computed from the delay slot time and delay frame time. Other improvements are the introduction of sleeping mode energy saving technique. The last contribution is through the enabled base station's ability to become a cluster head. A simulation based performance evaluation of our proposed EN-SWEET protocol shows superiority in energy efficiency.

This paper presents the design and fabrication of a highly-miniaturized system for continuous glucose monitoring which holds great promise for patients inflicted with diabetes mellitus. To achieve the realization of a truly implantable system, a variety of issues such as robust electrochemical sensor design, miniaturization of the electronic components and counteracting biofouling and negative tissue response need to be addressed. In this report, we present a highly-miniaturized transcutaneous continuous glucose monitoring system which holistically addresses the aforementioned tribulations associated with implantable devices. Specifically, a high performance amperometric electrochemical glucose sensor is integrated with custom designed complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor electronics. The fabricated electrochemical sensor is Clark-based, and employs stratification of five functional layers to achieve a linear response within the physiological range of glucose concentration (2–22 mM). Furthermore, the sensor is encased with a thick polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel containing poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) microspheres which provides continuous, localized delivery of dexamethasone utilized to combat inflammation and fibrosis. Such miniature size (0.665 mm 2 ) and low power operation (140 μW) of the electronic system render it ideal for continuous glucose monitoring devices and other metabolic sensing systems.

DC faults may cause severe disruptions in continuity of service to vital loads in a shipboard integrated power system, hence detection, isolation, and protection against such faults must be incorporated in both medium-voltage DC (MVDC) and low-voltage DC (LVDC) systems. Here we consider the effectiveness of existing z-source breakers and propose several new designs more appropriate for fault detection in MVDC and LVDC systems. In particular, we perform an optimization study that aims to minimize dissipation and weight and we identify the key parameters for use in MVDC and LVDC systems. Preliminary verification and validation studies are also included.

Vocal hyperfunction is a description of abnormal patterns of vocal behavior that may lead to many common voice disorders. Previous studies demonstrated that disorders associated with hyperfunction could be detected in patients by measuring aerodynamic and acoustic parameters from recordings of a single sustained vowel using a Rothenberg mask setup. Although ambulatory systems have shown the best potential for unobtrusive long-term monitoring of vocal function, their ability to differentiate hyperfunctional from normal patterns of vocal behavior has not been assessed. This study provides an initial quantitative evaluation of the capabilities of a neck surface acceleration signal to objectively detect abnormal vocal behaviors associated with hyperfunctionally-related disorders. The goal is to verify if such detection is possible using a neck accelerometer signal rather than an airflow mask and incorporate vocal gestures from multiple vowels and running speech. An impedance-based inverse filtering algorithm is used to estimate aerodynamic parameters from the neck-surface acceleration signal. The results obtained when contrasting five patients with vocal nodules to five paired normal subjects indicate that the accelerometer-based assessment offers comparable discrimination capabilities as those from the aerodynamic recordings. The results also provide a first indication that this discrimination is possible with an expanded sample that includes other sustained vowels and running speech. © 2013 Firenze University Press.

Many common voice disorders are chronic or recurring conditions that result from abusive and/or faulty patterns of vocal behavior referred to as vocal hyperfunction. Thus, an ongoing goal is the development of long-term ambulatory monitoring for clinical assessment, prevention and modification of hyperfunctional patterns of vocal behavior. This paper reports our initial efforts toward real-time behavioral biofeedback using the smartphone-based Voice Health Monitor that records the highbandwidth acceleration from the neck skin above the sternal notch. By incorporating real-time estimation of fundamental frequency and sound pressure level, the monitor can provide various types of biofeedback to the user through a vibrotactile alert. The performance of the monitor is compared with that of the commercially available Ambulatory Phonation Monitor (APM) using a bioacoustic transducer tester that generates repeatable vibratory stimuli recorded from ahuman subject. Ambulatory features computed include phonation time, fundamental frequency, sound pressure level, and compliance to a specified threshold level. The results support the implementation of biofeedback in the smartphonebased system and illustrate that the new platform's technology performs more reliably than the APM. Future work calls for the exploration of more sophisticated algorithms to measure vocal behavior and provide clinically meaningful biofeedback. © 2013 Firenze University Press.
