The analysis and evaluation of the speed performance of personal computers for various classes of applications continues to be an important area of research. One such class of applications is that of embedded applications. Embedded applications such as VOIP, streaming video and image processing software etc. are used significantly in the personal computer domain. In this paper, we analyze the execution characteristics of a subset of widely used embedded applications on a general personal computer based on the Intel Pentium 4 microprocessor. It was observed that, for most of the applications chosen here, the combination of lower trace cache hit rates and lower L1 cache load hit rates may have a more adverse impact on the performance of this machine when compared to other parameters such as L2 cache load hit rates, branch prediction rates, etc. The overall L2 cache load hit rates, branch prediction rates and TLB hit rates were found to be fairly high. Hardware improvements over the trace cache and L1 cache structures of the chosen machine could help improve performance for many of these applications.

Numerous genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have been performed in order to determine the susceptible loci of diseases. However, most diseases still cannot be explained by a single locus. Pathway-based methods address this problem by combining those small effects into groups of related genes or pathways. However, because pathway-based approaches consist of multiple steps, there is much room for improvement. This paper presents an improved method for translating list of SNPs from GWAS into list of genes. We incrementally adjusted and compared different modifications applied to Parkinson's disease (PD) genome-wide SNP data and then used GSEA-P to analyze the resulting list of genes. After careful adjustments, we are able to identify more relevant pathways that were not found previously.

Dual spectral source assisted MOCVD is an ideal technique for the deposition of high dielectric constant materials as well as other electronic and optical materials. Tungsten halogen lamps and a deuterium lamp are used as the sources of optical and thermal energy. Ta2O5 films were deposited at 200°C for 30 minutes and annealed at 600°C for 30 minutes have shown leakage current densities as low as 10−10 A/ cm2 for gate voltage under 5V. To the best of our knowledge, these are the best results reported to date by other researchers. The high energy photons used in the in-situ cleaning and deposition process play an important role in obtaining high quality films of Ta2O5.

A new multiuser scheduling scheme is proposed and analyzed in this paper. The proposed system combines features of conventional full-feedback selection-based diversity systems and reduced-feedback switch-based diversity systems. The new hybrid system provides flexibility in trading-off the channel information feedback overhead with the prospected multiuser diversity gains. The users are clustered into groups, and the users' groups are ordered into a sequence. Per-group feedback thresholds are used and optimized to maximize the system overall achievable rate. The proposed hybrid system applies switched diversity criterion to choose one of the groups, and a selection criterion to decide the user to be scheduled from the chosen group. Numerical results demonstrate that the system capacity increases as the number of users per group increases, but at the cost of more required feedback messages.

Thin film gallium nitride (GaN) scintillators have been produced by MOCVD and made neutron-sensitive by applying an enriched lithium-6 fluoride (6LiF) conversion layer. The 6Li(n,α) reaction produces both alpha and triton particles, which have very penetration depths in GaN. The range and energy deposition characteristics of these particles in GaN have been simulated. Alpha-induced scintillation was measured in silicon-doped GaN using an americium-241 (241Am) source. The thermal neutron responses of the 6LiF-coated GaN scintillator were tested using two thermal neutron sources, an 241Am-Be source inside a graphite pile and a reactor source. The scintillator was found to have a linear response to thermal neutron flux level over a range of more than three orders of magnitude.
