Liver biopsy remains the gold standard in monitoring progression of liver fibrosis associated with an abnormal increase in collagen. Descriptive scoring systems are still being widely used to grade biopsy samples. In this study, we propose a new set of features by clustering collagen fibers into three groups first based on their localization and connectivity properties, and then by extracting morphological features of collagen fibers. The new feature set is compared to the earlier features used in classification of liver fibrosis, which were based on the total amount of collagen fibers. Our results show that new features lead to more accurate grading of liver fibrosis.

An experiment was performed for the observation of H emission induced in a cooled laser-induced atmospheric pressure gas plasma of He atoms in their metastable excited state. The strong H emission detected clearly established, to the exclusion of other well known major excitation processes, the exclusive contribution of the He-induced excitation (HIE) mechanism. The process is suggested to take place by means of energy transfer from the excited He atoms to the H atoms via Penning collision induced ionization involving electron exchange. The result further shows that this mechanism may also work for elements other than H and thereby strongly suggests the use of ambient He gas to broaden and complement the applications of standard laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy. © 2011 American Institute of Physics.

We propose a novel optimization-based paradigm for designing enhanced classifiers. The proposed paradigm allows us to incorporate available prior process knowledge into classifier design, thereby improving the performance of the resulting classifiers. In this work, we focus on dynamical systems that can be represented as finite-state multi-dimensional stochastic processes that possess labeled steady-state distributions. Given prior operational knowledge of the process, our goal is to build a classifier that can accurately label future observations obtained from the steady-state, by utilizing both the available prior knowledge and the training data. Simulation results show that the proposed paradigm yields improved classifiers that outperform traditional classifiers that use only training data.

In this study a data acquisition card has been designed and implemented to observe and analysis of the voltages and the currents of an alternator under resistive, capacitive and inductive loads. Detail analysis of power, power factor, phase angles and harmonics of the alternator has been done using software written in LabVIEW. The measurement system of voltage and current is opened to remote access. Users can access to the system from any computer having internet connection and make the instantaneous measurements. The experimental results show that the data obtained from power analyzer are very close to remote monitored one. Therefore the system developed can be a useful tool for engineering education purposes as an online course material, a simulator and an online control experiment.

This paper will chronicle the implementation of the offer of support for students to do applied research in the area of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) by the area electrical power company into a working program in which both undergraduate and graduate students have participated. The local electrical power distribution and transmission company, CenterPoint Energy, developed an interest in plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). They contacted the administration of the College of technology at the University of Houston to ask if there was an interest in student research projects in PHEVs, and the problems associated with implementing an infrastructure to serve them. The Electrical Power engineering technology program faculty was very interested in the power company proposal since this would be an opportunity for students to learn by working on real world problems. CenterPoint Energy would provide a stipend for the undergraduate students taking special problems courses in PHEV topics, which would be under the guidance of one of the authors, an Electrical Power engineering technology faculty member. In addition the CenterPoint Energy would provide the PHEV to study, the necessary data gathering equipment, and advertise the involvement of the College of technology and CenterPoint in the project. The CenterPoint Representative wanted the product from undergraduate student projects to be a presentation by the students on their research projects to a group of employees of the Power Company. The graduate research activity is being supported by funding a graduate research assistant position for one of the authors who is involved in smart-grid research. The expected outcome of the graduate research component is a contribution of the student to the research results that will be disseminated in technical conferences and journal papers. Effectively teaching human-centered design can pose challenges within the undergraduate curriculum as it requires access to users and stakeholders. Service-learning, a growing pedagogy within engineering, offers many synergistic opportunities to create a human-centered design experience. In service-learning, students are paired with a real user in a real community and asked to address a real need. This paper presents the implementation of a human-centered design approach using service-learning at Purdue University. The approach is multidisciplinary with participation from students within and outside of engineering. The design process and curricular structure is discussed along with example projects that illustrate the approach from the perspectives including mechanical, electrical and software design. Successes and challenges are also discussed. © American Society for engineering Education, 2010.

Recently, some variants of the l1 norm, particularly matrix norms such as the l1,2 and l 1,∞ norms, have been widely used in multi-task learning, compressed sensing and other related areas to enforce sparsity via joint regularization. In this paper, we unify the l 1,2 and l1,∞ norms by considering a family of l 1,q norms for 1 1,q norm. Based on this probabilistic interpretation, we develop a probabilistic model using the noninformative Jeffreys prior. We also extend the model to learn and exploit more general types of pairwise relationships between tasks. For both versions of the model, we devise expectation-maximization (EM) algorithms to learn all model parameters, including q, automatically. Experiments have been conducted on two cancer classification applications using microarray gene expression data.

Visualization of highway traffic environments in virtual reality plays a key role on fidelity of simulation and validity of driving behaviors in driving simulator studies. This paper describes a procedure to replicate a signalized intersection with many complex features into a driving simulator's 3-D databases through building a graphical visual database, constructing a road motion database, and creating simulated traffic. The validity of the visualization was assessed via the comparison of the drivers' speeds in the simulator and the speed data at the real intersection. It was found that both speed data follow normal distributions and have equal means for each intersection approach;however, that the speeds measured in the driving simulator have a larger variability than those measured in the field. The users' subjective evaluation results indicated that 92% subjects could recognize the simulated intersection in the driving simulator experiment. Therefore, the strategy of geo-specific environment modeling would be useful for studying driving behaviors in virtual environments.

The nonlinear effects of partial erasure and transition shift, however, often limit the performance attained by the partial response maximum likelihood (PRML) detector because of model mismatch. Conventionally, the nonlinear effects are either ignored or approximated by linearization technique. In the article, a PRML detector for the PR4 model including the nonlinear effects has been developed to improve the detector performance. The new representation is more accurate and the corresponding PRML detector has better performance without increasing the realization complexity. computer simulation results show that the new representation outperforms the conventional ones due to the enhanced modeling capability. The method is also expected to be applied in the high order partial response channel. © 2010 IEEE.
