We developed an optical tweezers directed approach that allows synthesis of different oligonucleotide on an array of controlled pore glass (CPG) beads in parallel in a two-stream laminar flow microreactor and obtained one oligo sequence per bead. This reactor has been shown to effectively facilitate CPG bead loading and confinement, maintain liquid/ liquid (inert liquid/reagent) interface and withstand the reagents and solvents present in the modified phosphoramidite chemistry. The optical tweezers allows us to externally manipulate the CPG beads inside the channel without having to modify the microfluidic device itself. The parallel synthesis of several different oligonucleotides in a single synthetic run was demonstrated.

This research proposes a method to eliminate friction effect and reduced tracking error on CNC milling machines. A CNC milling machine has many connected mechanical components which have friction effects such as ball screws and rails. To control servo motors which are used to drive X-Y table in CNC milling machine, the conventional PID controller is widely used. In this research, Panasonic motor driver is set to the torque control mode. To compensate the friction effects, the friction feedforward compensation method is proposed. Moreover, to reduce the position tracking error, position feedforward controller is used. The simulation and implementation of position control in one axis of PID with Friction Feedforward Compensation and Position Feedforward Controller (FFC-PFC) are presented.

The paper developed a block-wise approach for ICA algorithms which can improve the computational efficiency of ICA without the degradation of performance for the separation of biomedical signals. Source signals including electrocardiogram (ECG), electromyogram (EMG) and 60-Hz sinusoid are linearly mixed for experimental tests. The mean-square errors (MSE) between the original sources and the separated signals are calculated for the evaluation of separation performance. These results demonstrated that the proposed block-wise approach can achieve the desired separation performance of signals in a more efficient way.

The worldwide Digital Signage market has been getting increasingly popular in recent years. Nevertheless, for service providers, the Digital Signage business is still not easy to manage and time-consuming to operate. In this paper, based on the GPS and wireless infrastructure, we present a mobile location-aware digital signage system (LDSS). Through the centralized system architecture, the applications for the Digital Signage can be expanded to various advertising vehicles including buses and other mobile advertising vehicles. Also, we present an advertisement recommendation algorithm, by which the advertisement can be broadcasted in the right markets more effectively. Evidenced by simulated experiments and analysis, compared with traditional region trigger advertising, sequential advertising and random advertising, our advertisement recommendation algorithm can effectively reach to the key target audiences in planned regions, while show excellent ability to differentiate markets in unplanned regions reaching to the target consumer groups as well.

In this paper, we investigate a dual-hop opportunistic decode-and-forward relaying scheme where the source may or not be able to communicate directly with the destination. We first derive statistics based on exact probability density function (PDF) of each hop. Then, the PDFs are used to determine closed-form outage probability expression for a transmission rate R. Furthermore, we evaluate the asymptotic outage performance and the diversity order is deduced. Unlike existing works where the analysis focused on high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime, such results are important to enable the designers to take decisions regarding practical systems that operate at low SNR regime. We show that performance simulation results coincide with our analytical results under practical assumption of unbalanced hops.

Solving algorithmic problems and implementing them in code is a major theme in introductory computer science courses. Problems related to string manipulation are common and of great importance in various domains. In the context of computer science education, solving algorithmic problems of this type may be very challenging for novices, even for the more competent students. Analysis of novice students' solutions to a specific class of problems dealing with string manipulation revealed that a widespread intuitive and non-linear approach was used to solve these problems, which led to cumbersome and erroneous solutions. On the other hand, a straightforward linear approach that leads to shorter and more elegant solutions is uncommon. Uncovering students' common and unsatisfactory approaches in problem solving have significant implications on instruction.

There exists a need for additional transmission capacity to connect distributed resources such as wind energy from remote locations to the power grid. The high cost of running transmission lines necessitates having a way to minimize the length of transmission required to connect the distributed resources to load centers. In addition, the substations that connect to the transmission lines need to be fault tolerant by ensuring that the loss of any one transmission line does not result in the loss of power to any substation. In this paper, the relative cost of connecting a range of sources to a range of loads with and without fault tolerance is presented. Fault tolerance is achieved through a 2-path redundant graph approach. Studies show that the additional cost of ensuring fault tolerance for selected schemes ranges between 8% and 33%. This percentage value can support decision making in practice.

Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensors with spectral interrogation provide a high refractive index resolution, a large dynamic range and a fixed optical detection module. In this work, we propose a new spectral detection unit that uses only one spectrometer to measure the SPR spectrum from multiple sensing spots rapidly and serially without any mechanical movement. This spectral detection unit is designed based on a spatial light modulator (SLM) configured as a programmable optical aperture for the spectrometer. To demonstrate this concept, a five-channel SPR sensor was built based on the proposed multichannel detection unit and we evaluated the device performance using a refractive index test. The average device refractive index resolution was 1.4 × 10 -6 refractive index units (RIU).

This paper introduces a new cantilever type multi-source energy harvester generating electric power from both ambient heat and vibration. Harvesting energy from vibration was realized by electromagnetic conversion, whereas the energy generation from heat was supplied by making use of Seebeck effect of Cr–Al thermocouples implemented on the microcantilevers. The measured average Seebeck coefficient is 12 μV/K per thermocouple. A total voltage of 3.3 mV was generated from the thermoelectric part and 13.4 mV from the electromagnetic part of the device. Measured total power from the fabricated chip is 1.91 nW (1.12 nW from vibration, 0.79 nW from thermoelectric).
