Studies indicate that making learners feel good is important only minor to clear knowledge transformation. Many studies have tried to use virtual humans as a part of interface in learning systems to increase the effect of instructions. Based on social interaction and pedagogical theories, many e-learning systems use animated films or virtual reality to boost human-computer engagement and ease their negative emotions. However, affective learning systems still need much research to improve their functionalities and usability. This study proposed a convenient approach to develop an emotionally interactive learning system;learners can express their emotions by mouse-clicking while learning. A virtual human was created to empathically react to learners in proactive and reactive ways to encourage and persuade them into persistent learning and help achieve their goals. Experimental results show that, averagely, subjects can tell virtual human's emotions and agree to its empathic reactions. Persuasion conducted by virtual human could not increase subjects' learning time, but could significantly increase their completion rate of exercises. Copyright 2009 ACM.

Reliable wireless transmission of medical data is achievable in a modern telemetry setting and is put to good use. However, intercommunications among the different medical devices and initiation of controls to avoid unsafe incidents are generally not available. Interoperability among medical devices connected to a patient at a remote site is a challenging feature for practical realization that would increase safety. A new system is proposed to improve infusion therapy safety by implementing an interoperability feature coupled with a smart clinical decision support system. This system is designed to respond promptly to medication error alerts by the use of safety commands and interlocks. The design incorporates an innovative Intelligent Interoperability Supervisor (IIS) in the system which includes an infusion pump (or pumps) delivering drug therapy to a patient connected to relevant monitoring devices. A local decision support unit in IIS in the remote location analyzes the data transmitted by interface modules on the connected medical devices and verifies with preset patient-specific alarm criteria to detect presence of any crisis or to predict potential adverse episode. If the situation is assessed to be critical, IIS sends appropriate alert signals to a remote clinical care giver and control commands to the infusion pump to activate appropriate safety interlocks. Different critical situations of clinical cases are simulated in a conventional infusion therapy system (Configuration A), and in an IIS-implemented system (Configuration B). In Configuration A, there would be a significant delay between alarm occurrence and clinician intervention;such a time delay could lead to potential deterioration of patient condition. In this paper, a finger pose estimation method is presented. A direct use of fingers is useful in some applications which require handling of 3D position information. Our finger pose estimation method exploits anatomical constraints on finger motion and ring-shaped markers to achieve simple and practical measurements applicable to daily life situations. The use of anatomical constraints ensures that no exact placement of the markers is required.

We study both classical and quantum relation between two Hamiltonian systems which are mutually connected by time-dependent canonical transformation. One is ordinary conservative system and the other is timedependent Hamiltonian system. The quantum unitary operator relevant to classical canonical transformation between the two systems are obtained through rigorous evaluation. With the aid of the unitary operator, we have derived quantum states of the time-dependent Hamiltonian system through transforming the quantum states of the conservative system. The invariant operators of the two systems are presented and the relation between them are addressed. We showed that there exist numerous Hamiltonians, which gives the same classical equation of motion. Though it is impossible to distinguish the systems described by these Hamiltonians within the realm of classical mechanics, they can be distinguishable quantum mechanically.

We propose a system which separates saxophone melodies from composite recordings of saxophone, piano, and/or orchestra. The system is intended to produce an accompaniment sans saxophone suitable for rehearsal and practice purposes. A Melody Line Detection (MLD) algorithm is proposed as the starting point for a source separation implementation which incorporates known information about typical saxophone melody lines, acoustic characteristics and range of the saxophone in order to prevent and correct detection errors. By extracting reliable information about the soloist melody line, the system separates piano or orchestra accompaniments from the solo part. The system was tested with commercial recordings and a performance of 79.7% of accurate detections was achieved. The accompaniment tracks obtained after source separation successfully remove most of the saxophone sound while preserving the original nature of the accompaniment track.

Risk prevention and alarm are crucial for home care of aged people who live alone. In this paper, an acousticallyanalytic approach is proposed to extract behavioral patterns for modeling and monitoring living activities. An experimental environment was established for collecting sound tracking data of behaviors from daily activities. Each sound tracking data was transcribed to the corresponding sound event sequences by caregivers and psychologists. A living activities mining algorithm is applied to extract meaningful sequences of sound event as behavioral patterns. Then K-means algorithm is adopted to classify events into several fuzzy clusters relating to living activities for modeling behaviors in daily activities. An experimental database consists of 150 sound tracking data was established by collecting three guided behaviors included rolled out of bed to drink water, go to the toilet and watch the fish jar from 5 subjects in two weeks. 476 meaningful sequences of sound events were explored and clustered into 32 quasi-activities. These quasi-activities were further concluded into 5 kinds of behavioral patterns for modeling living activities. The preliminary result shows the potential for modeling and proactively detecting abnormal behaviors or changes of the aged.
