In this work, an array of quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) sensors is fabricated on a single quartz crystal substrate and attached with poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) micro chamber for using in flow-injection system. The Cr/Au electrode array is deposited on both side of quartz substrate by sputtering through electroplated microshadow mask. PDMS micro chamber was fabricated by mold casting technique with SU-8 mold. Fabricated PDMS micro chamber and QCM sensor array were attached together for using in flow-injection system. In our experiment, the QCM electrodes were coated with the carboxylic poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC-COOH) and then the carboxylic group was activated with carbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC) and N-hydroxylsuccinimide (NHS) for protein binding. The scanning electron micrograph shown the trapped protein on the modified sensing layer, it confirmed that our QCM sensor and PDMS micro chamber can be used as QCM biosensor array. This new QCM sensor array provide possibility of multiple detection in small amount of sample within a single quartz crystal substrate that avoid the error signal from the different properties of each sensor in an array.

A data mining framework has been proposed to estimate intracranial pressure (ICP) non-invasively in our previous work. In the corresponding approach, the feature vector extracted from arterial blood pressure (ABP) and flow velocity (FV) is translated to the estimated errors by the mapping function for each entry in the database. In this paper, three different mapping function solutions, linear least squares (LLS), truncated singular value decomposition (TSVD) and standard Tikhonov regularization (STR) are systemically tested to compare the possible effects of different solutions on the non-invasive ICP estimation. The conducted comparison demonstrated that the selection of mapping function solution actually influences the estimation. Among the tested three solutions for mapping function, TSVD and STR show better ICP estimation performance with smaller ICP errors than LLS.

Changes of ICP waveform morphology are characterized with different patients' states like hypertension, hydrocephalus and traumatic brain injury etc. Morphological clustering and analysis of ICP pulse (MOCAIP) approach is recently developed to extract ICP morphology feature, in which hierarchical clustering is used to extract the dominated pulse. In this paper, we evaluate the feasibility of using principle component analysis (PCA) and independent component analysis (ICA) to extract dominated pulse. The comparative study among clustering, PCA and ICP based approaches shows that PCA approach may be an alternative of clustering approach to extract dominated pulse in a faster fashion when dataset is of large size.

This report summarizes the proceedings of the second workshop of the 'Minimum Information for Biological and Biomedical Investigations' (MIBBI) consortium held on Dec 1-2, 2010 in Rüdesheim, Germany through the sponsorship of the Beilstein-Institute. MIBBI is an umbrella organization uniting communities developing Minimum Information (MI) checklists to standardize the description of data sets, the workflows by which they were generated and the scientific context for the work. This workshop brought together representatives of more than twenty communities to present the status of their MI checklists and plans for future development. Shared challenges and solutions were identified and the role of MIBBI in MI checklist development was discussed. The meeting featured some thirty presentations, wide-ranging discussions and breakout groups. The top outcomes of the two-day workshop as defined by the participants were: 1) the chance to share best practices and to identify areas of synergy; 2) defining a series of tasks for updating the MIBBI Portal; 3) reemphasizing the need to maintain independent MI checklists for various communities while leveraging common terms and workflow elements contained in multiple checklists; and 4) revision of the concept of the MIBBI Foundry to focus on the creation of a core set of MIBBI modules intended for reuse by individual MI checklist projects while maintaining the integrity of each MI project. is taught to computer-science students as part of a comprehensive curriculum. The students encounter the concept of abstraction in various contexts while learning the different modules, each of which emphasizes some specific aspects of the concept. In this paper we present two instructional approaches, both related to utilizing abstraction in problem-solving processes: (1) pattern-oriented instruction (POI), and (2) abstract data type (ADT)-oriented instruction. We present these methods with respect to their employment in teaching problem solving to novices, and elaborate on abstraction processes.

It is proposed in this session that the interactivity necessary in ubiquitous learning can be enhanced by the virtual tutor who mediates between the learner and the e-Learning contents. Arousing students' intellectual curiosity and raising their motivation to learn are the two great goals for e-Learning contents developers. It is supposed that the interaction in the communication between the teacher and his/her students in a regular classroom can be maintained in e-Learning with the help of Virtual Tutor, which appears on the learning contents in a timely fashion to give learners advice, encouragement, reminders, and such. The session includes discussions to develop such a system making use of the most updated technology as well as demonstrations of such a system which has been experimented at department of Media Informatics. It is proved that the learning environment where human interactivity is essential can be reconstructed in terms of the proposed Virtual Tutor. This paper presentation includes demonstrations of QED as well as a discussion of the importance of interactivity in ubiquitous e-Learning. © 2008 IEEE.

Our department has entered into articulation agreements with several two-year colleges. Subsequently, we have commenced a dialogue with our community college partners as to how we can be more effective and student-centered in our approach to vertical integration. Traditionally, community colleges have done a good job of preparing technicians for industry, but graduates of two-year technical programs have more difficulty in getting appropriate credit for their technical courses. When transferring to a four-year program a direct equivalency is not always possible due to regulatory requirements, but in an outcome-based culture, it should be possible to create supplementary 1-credit or 0-credit courses that make such transfers possible. This paper will detail our initial efforts in that direction. © American Society for engineering Education, 2008.

This paper describes the design and development of a large 20 dBi (decibels isotropic) Wi-Fi antenna for a class project in the Communication Circuit Design course. This large antenna is based on smaller Wi-Fi antennas commonly referred to as cantennas (gain of about 10 dBi). The smaller version is made with a single can (3-4 inches) in diameter and an appropriately placed feed probe. Our version consists of several progressively larger cylindrical sections connected together by 34 degree flared sections (3 inches long). The first cylindrical section has a diameter of 4 inches and the last flared section has a diameter of about 36 inches. The overall length of the antenna is about 5 feet long. While the antenna was designed by electronic and computer engineering technology (ECET) students, mechanical engineering technology (MET) students took charge of building it under the supervision of their MET instructor. The structure was built by spot welding laser-cut pieces of sheet metal. ECET students made experimental measurements to verify the predicted gain and functionality. © American Society for engineering Education, 2008.

Conformal P-N junctions in macroporous silicon for photovoltaic energy conversion

We report on the fabrication of a macroporous silicon diode that successfully operates in a photovoltaic mode of energy conversion. Typical device structures are fabricated on 4″, Cz grown, <100>, p-type, 5 – 30 Ω-cm, Si substrates and make use of random or pre-patterned macroporous silicon films up to 100 μm thick with pores ∼1 μm in diameter and a center-to-center pore spacing of 2.5 μm. Phosphorous dopants are introduced throughout the porous silicon region with a newly adapted technique based on proximity rapid thermal diffusion. This development effort has enhanced the uniformity of dopant diffusion into the pores and subsequently improved device performance. The resulting p-n diode within the porous silicon is of a three-dimensional nature and exhibits an extremely high internal surface area up to ∼6690 cm 2 /cm 3 . To our knowledge, this is the first use of such a technique to fabricate conformal, three-dimensional p-n junctions for photovoltaic applications. The large internal surface area of this diode makes it applicable to next generation photovoltaics. Moreover, the porous silicon within this device is not simply an antireflection coating; rather it is a light trapping medium that has the ability to become a large surface area diode and can serve as a host matrix for photoactive compounds.
